Chapter 66 - Chapter 66

Seraiya and Maddie were enjoying lunch at a quaint outdoor café tucked along a cobblestone street. Wrought‑iron tables lined the patio, their curling designs catching the sunlight, while brightly colored umbrellas cast soft patches of shade over the diners. The air was warm, humming with the distant chatter of passersby and the occasional clink of cutlery. The aroma of freshly baked bread drifted from inside the café, blending with the rich scent of strong coffee and the sweetness of flower boxes overflowing with marigolds, petunias, and trailing ivy.

Maddie swung her legs under her chair, taking another bite of her sandwich. "This is really good," she said, cheeks puffed slightly as she chewed, clearly savoring every flavor.

"It's one of my favorite spots," Seraiya replied, her voice softening with nostalgia. She watched Maddie with a fondness that came naturally now, the kind that had grown quickly but deeply. "You're from the States, right?" Maddie asked.

Seraiya nodded, as Maddie brushed crumbs from her fingers. "I am, but from about the time I was twelve until I was fifteen or sixteen, I was here," Seraiya continued, her gaze drifting past the street, past the present. Her eyes softened, unfocusing as memories tugged at her—running through forests, the pack house lit by lanterns at night in the summer, Amani's laugh echoing in the distance.

Before Maddie could ask anything else, a voice cut through the warm afternoon air.

"Rai…"

Seraiya blinked, pulled abruptly back to the moment. She and Maddie looked up to see Zach standing just beyond the table. His hair was slightly tousled, as if he'd run his hands through it in frustration or worry. His expression was a mix of concern and surprise, his chest rising and falling a little too quickly.

"Hello, Zach," Seraiya greeted him, her smile warm but tinged with something unreadable.

"How are you feeling… after the other day?" he asked, his voice low, eyes scanning her face as though searching for cracks she might be hiding.

"I'm fine, no need to worry," she assured him, though a faint tension tightened her shoulders. Maddie noticed—she'd stopped mid‑bite, staring at Zach with wide, curious eyes.

"Zach, this is Maddie," Seraiya said, gesturing to the girl across from her. "She is being protected by myself and the pack. Maddie, this is Zach—my childhood friend and the love of my life." she said jokingly

Zach froze. His eyes widened, and a faint blush crept up his neck, coloring his cheeks. Love of her life? The words echoed in his mind, stirring something old and familiar.

"It's nice to meet you, Maddie," he said, clearing his throat as he extended a hand. Maddie didn't take it—she simply nodded, her gaze flicking between the two adults like she was trying to decode a puzzle no one had given her the rules for.

Seraiya's attention shifted toward the café's interior. Through the glass, a shadow lingered near the counter. "I see Kyra is hiding in the shadows again," she said dryly.

"She just wanted a coffee," Zach replied simply

"Maddie, why don't you go inside and grab some sweets to bring with us?" Seraiya suggested, rising from her chair and handing her a card.

"Okay!" Maddie chirped, snatching the card and darting inside with the enthusiasm only a twelve‑year‑old promised sugar could muster.

As soon as she was out of earshot, Seraiya exhaled. "I told Derek I didn't want to be his mate."

Zach's brows shot up. "You did?"

"It's nothing against him," she said, her voice quiet but firm. "I just… can't do it again."

Zach's expression softened, shadows of old hurt flickering in his eyes. "You know, there was a point when I thought I would be your mate."

Seraiya looked at him, really looked at him. The years between them, the pain, the loyalty, the unspoken bond—they all seemed to settle in the space between their breaths.

"Zach… you are my soul mate," she said gently. "In every way that matters."

Zach swallowed, his throat tightening. He opened his mouth to speak—

—but Seraiya's phone rang sharply, slicing through the moment.

She snatched it up. "You have got to be kidding me," she muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I'll be right there."

"What's wrong?" Zach asked, already bracing himself.

"Aiden's brother has returned," she said, her tone shifting from soft to steel. "And he's claiming he's the rightful alpha."

Maddie reappeared with a small box of pastries in her hands, Kyra trailing behind her with a fresh cup of coffee. "So what's next?" Maddie asked, sensing the tension.

"Seems we have to cut the day short," Seraiya told her. "There's a slight problem back at the pack."

"That's alright," Maddie said with a shrug, though her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

Kyra raised a brow at Seraiya. Zach looked between them, clearly torn between worry and anticipation.

"Would you two like to join us?" Seraiya asked, her voice calm but carrying an undercurrent of challenge. "I'm sure you'd love to see what's about to happen."

It didn't take long for the four of them to reach the pack house. The building rose from the clearing like a fortress of dark timber and stone, its windows glowing faintly with the warm light inside. The air around it felt charged, as if the walls themselves sensed the tension approaching. Seraiya pushed open the heavy double doors first, her boots echoing sharply against the polished wooden floor. Maddie, Zack, and Kyra slipped in behind her, forming a quiet but unmistakably united line at her back.

Inside, the main hall stretched wide, lit by chandeliers made of antlers and iron. The scent of pine, old smoke, and wolf lingered thick in the air. A group of pack members stood scattered around the room, their murmurs dying instantly as Seraiya entered.

"So this is the little bitch who stole my pack," a voice spat.

A man stepped forward from the shadows near the staircase. His brown hair was tousled as if he'd run his hands through it in frustration, and his eyes—dark, sharp, and simmering with resentment—locked onto Seraiya. He looked enough like Aiden that the bloodline was obvious: the same strong jaw, the same height, the same broad shoulders. But where Aiden had carried warmth and steadiness, this man radiated bitterness. His posture was rigid, coiled, like a wolf ready to snap.

"Kyle, right?" Seraiya asked, her voice steady as she tilted her head. Her expression didn't waver, though the tension in the room thickened. "Mind telling me why you think my pack is yours?"

Kyle scoffed, stepping closer. The floorboards creaked under his weight. "My brother had no heir. Meaning I was meant to be the next Alpha."

"In case you missed it," Seraiya replied, her eyes narrowing just slightly, "he chose me to succeed him."

"You lie, filthy mutt," he snarled, his lip curling. A few wolves behind him shifted uneasily, glancing between the two.

Seraiya didn't react at first. She simply inhaled, slow and controlled, then stepped forward. The sound of her heel striking the wood echoed like a warning. "If you want this pack," she said quietly, "there is only one way to take it."

Kyle's eyes widened, a flicker of uncertainty breaking through his bravado. "How do I know you won't cheat using your witchy powers?"

"I can't use magic in my wolf form," she answered, her voice low but unwavering.

Silence stretched for a heartbeat.

"Fine then," he growled, straightening his shoulders. "I challenge you, Seraiya Mason—false Alpha of the Grey Moon Pack—to a fight to the end. An Alpha challenge."

A ripple of shock moved through the room. Maddie stiffened. Zack's jaw clenched. Kyra's eyes flashed with protective fury.

Seraiya only smiled. Slow. Dangerous. Confident.

"I accept."
