Chapter 4 - Cameras *

The atmosphere surrounding the dusty village entrance remained eerily quiet long after the medical vehicle stopped its sirens. Director Lorenzo stood beside the stretcher without showing a single trace of impatience, adjusting his medical coat while waiting for instructions.

Around him, paramedics, assisting nurses, and the surrounding television crew stared at Evanesse in complete speechlessness. They were all struggling to process the scene, wondering why a prestigious hospital chief was acting so subordinate toward a young woman.

Sylvaniah stood near the edge of the courtyard, equally stunned by the strange display of deference. She had inherited memories indicating that her sister-in-law worked somewhere in the medical field, but judging from Director Lorenzo's submissive posture, Evanesse was vastly more influential than she had originally assumed.

Evanesse, however, appeared entirely unfazed by the sudden shift in attention. She stepped toward the elderly patient with calm steps, extending two fingers to press firmly against the woman's fragile wrist.

"Check her blood pressure immediately," Evanesse instructed, her tone dropping into a composed, professional register.

An attending nurse hurriedly stepped forward, handing over the portable monitor without question.

"Her pulse remains wildly irregular," the nurse reported nervously.

"Prepare a standard dose of aspirin and initiate low-flow oxygen therapy," Evanesse commanded smoothly.

The surrounding emergency crew moved instinctively, reacting to her words with practiced speed. Not a single person in a uniform questioned her sudden authority or paused to ask for credentials.

Even Director Lorenzo stood silently at her shoulder, nodding in agreement as she systematically managed the acute crisis. He adjusted the oxygen mask himself, strictly adhering to her clinical assessment.

After a swift physical examination, Evanesse raised her head to address the distraught family members hovering nearby. "Her vitals have stabilized enough to attempt transport now, so please try to keep calm."

The elderly patient's daughter let out a tearful breath, clutching her hands together in overwhelming relief. "Thank you so much, Doctor!"

Evanesse offered a small, comforting smile, her sharp clinical demeanor softening in an instant. "Director Lorenzo will oversee the rest of her care on the way to the medical center."

With the situation under control, she stepped back from the open ambulance doors to allow the crew room to maneuver. Director Lorenzo offered her another deeply respectful nod before boarding the vehicle to personally supervise the patient.

The heavy doors slammed shut with a metallic thud, sealing the back of the emergency transport. Moments later, the low wail of the siren faded down the winding dirt road toward the primary highway.

Only after the vehicle disappeared behind the green hills did the television production crew finally remember how to breathe. The floor manager clapped his hands together with a loud crack, snapping everyone out of their trance.

"Alright, everyone, let us get back to work!" he shouted, waving his arms toward the main village set.

The unexpected medical incident had delayed their preliminary setup schedule by nearly an hour. Fortunately, the local resident was safe, leaving the production team free of any immediate tragedy.

The tense mood across the rural courtyard gradually softened as workers returned to testing lighting rigs and setting up equipment tents. The ambient chatter of the crew resumed, filling the air with standard broadcast preparations.

Evanesse casually walked over to the wooden equipment crate she had carried earlier, lifting it as though nothing extraordinary had transpired. She dusted off her denim jeans with a quick swipe of her palm.

"Miss!" a young production assistant called out, jogging across the gravel path toward her with frantic steps.

The young assistant reached out to grab the heavy crate, looking at Evanesse with wide, nervous eyes. "You really do not need to carry those heavy boxes anymore!"

"It is quite alright," Evanesse replied, offering a warm, reassuring smile that instantly eased the assistant's tension. "Everyone on set is already so busy, so I do not mind helping out."

Without waiting for a counterargument, she continued walking toward the primary equipment tent to help arrange the camera cases. She set the heavy gear down with ease, aligning the boxes neatly along the canvas wall.

Several crew members standing nearby exchanged deeply awkward glances, shifting their weight from side to side. Just an hour ago, they had dismissively categorized her as a hired assistant riding on Sylvaniah's coattails.

Now, after watching a famous surgical authority bow before her, none of them dared to offer unsolicited advice or boss her around. They simply watched in quiet fascination as she adjusted cables with quiet efficiency.

The following morning brought crisp air and clear skies, marking the first official day of filming for the show. Large broadcast cameras were stationed at strategic distances apart around the central village square, capturing every angle of the rustic location.

Brightly colored promotional banners fluttered gently above the wooden entrance arch, adding a splash of commercial life to the rural scenery. One by one, the participating celebrity guests began arriving in production vehicles.

Popular lead actor Marcus Hale stepped out of a black sedan first, accompanied by his younger brother, who offered a wave to the gathered crew. Next arrived award-winning solo singer Celeste Quinn, who walked hand-in-hand with her elegant mother while smiling for the behind-the-scenes cameras.

The arriving guests gathered near the center of the square, exchanging lively greetings and sharing casual banter with the production staff. The atmosphere was cheerful and full of lighthearted social energy.

Then, Sylvaniah walked into the open square.

The lively chatter among the gathered celebrities noticeably cooled down, slipping into a tentative silence. Several actors exchanged subtle, knowing glances before offering polite, distant nods in her direction.

"Morning," Marcus said curtly, maintaining his distance.

"Good morning," Celeste added, offering a tight, artificial smile before turning her attention back to her mother.

No one made any attempt to engage Sylvaniah in further conversation or invite her into their small circle. The emotional distance between her and the rest of the cast was stark and undeniable.

Sylvaniah had fully anticipated this cold reception from her industry peers. The original owner's terrible public reputation was not something that could be erased by a single pleasant morning greeting.

Rather than forcing her presence on people who clearly disliked her, she quietly walked over to a shaded wooden bench near the perimeter fence. She sat down gracefully, calmly waiting for the show's director to announce the start of the primary tasks.

Meanwhile, Evanesse naturally integrated herself into the busy background activities of the production site. She showed zero interest in joining the celebrity social circles, preferring instead to observe the local village life.

When she noticed an elderly village woman struggling to lift two oversized woven baskets filled with freshly harvested radish roots, Evanesse immediately walked over. She matched the older woman's slow pace without rushing her.

"Please allow me to carry those for you," Evanesse offered gently, reaching down toward the wooden handles.

Before the elderly villager could object, Evanesse had already lifted both heavy baskets off the ground with a smooth, fluid motion. She held them balanced against her sides, keeping her posture straight.

"Oh dear, those are far too heavy for a young lady," the old woman protested, looking at her with concern.

"I assure you, I do not mind at all," Evanesse replied with a bright laugh, carrying the load toward the central storage shed.

A short while later, a young local child accidentally tripped over a thick power conduit while sprinting across the unpaved square. The boy pitched forward, losing his balance completely as he headed toward the hard dirt.

Before anyone else nearby could react, Evanesse moved forward and caught him gently by the shoulders, absorbing his momentum. She set him back on his feet before he could hit the ground.

The frightened boy blinked up at her through wide eyes, his chest heaving as he realized he was unhurt.

"...Thank you, Big Sister," he murmured shyly.

Evanesse knelt down on the dirt, gently dusting off the dry soil from his small cotton shirt. "You are very welcome, but please keep a close eye out for those black cables when you are running."

Minutes later, a senior camera operator let out a frustrated grunt while rubbing his sore shoulder near the main stage. He looked down at his equipment rig with an annoyed frown.

"Did your battery die?" Evanesse asked as she walked past his station.

The operator nodded helplessly, wiping sweat from his forehead. "It completely cut out on me, and I accidentally left the spare pack inside the secondary storage tent across the field."

"I will go retrieve it for you," she offered instantly, turning toward the path.

Before the cameraman could even attempt a polite refusal, she jogged lightly across the dirt road toward the equipment tents. Within five minutes, she returned holding the charged battery pack along with a chilled glass bottle of water.

"You have been standing under this hot morning sun since dawn," she said, handing him the cold beverage first.

The veteran technician accepted the bottle with visible embarrassment, his cheeks flushing slightly. "Thank you so much... that is remarkably thoughtful of you."

Nearby production assistants could not help but whisper among themselves as they watched her move around the set. They gathered near the sound control board, keeping their voices low.

"She is surprisingly considerate for a guest's family member," a young crew member observed quietly.

"She helped the village elders carry their crop baskets earlier today as well," another staff member pointed out, taking notes on a clipboard. "And she handled that terrifying medical situation yesterday without blinking."

"I have honestly never seen a celebrity relative work this hard or be this helpful on a reality set," a third worker admitted, shaking his head in admiration.

Even the primary program director kept his eyes fixed on Evanesse from inside the main control tent, monitoring her through the multi-screen display. He had originally feared that Sylvaniah's mysterious family member would prove to be an arrogant burden to his crew.

Instead, the young woman had somehow transformed into the production's most reliable asset, quietly solving problems before they could escalate. She moved through the set with effortless grace, never once seeking the spotlight.

During the afternoon lunch preparations, the village chef hired by the show suddenly realized he was missing several key aromatic herbs required for the traditional broth. He paced around the outdoor kitchen setup in a mild panic.

Before the production staff could scramble to send a vehicle into town, Evanesse walked up to the counter with a composed expression. She set down a fresh kitchen towel.

"I noticed wild herbs growing along the edge of the irrigation canal when we arrived," she informed the chef calmly. "I can gather a fresh batch for you in just a few minutes."

She returned less than ten minutes later, carrying a neatly organized bundle of fragrant green sprigs that matched the recipe requirements perfectly. She handed them over with a quick nod.

The elderly chef beamed with relief, his face breaking into a wide, wrinkled smile as he inspected the fresh produce. "You have completely saved today's lunch menu, young lady!"

"It was no trouble at all," Evanesse replied with a humble wave of her hand.

The chef let out a hearty laugh, shaking his wooden spoon gently in her direction. "No wonder your sister-in-law holds you in such high regard."

Evanesse's smile brightened even further, her eyes sparkling behind her thin-rimmed glasses. "I like my sister-in-law very much as well."

The simple, unhesitating response caused several nearby crew members to freeze in place, their hands pausing mid-task. There was not a single trace of pretense, obligation, or performative deceit in her tone.

She genuinely adored Sylvaniah, looking up to the disgraced actress with complete sincerity. The contrast between her pure affection and Sylvaniah's public image left the staff feeling deeply conflicted.

As filming continued through the hot afternoon, more and more camera operators found their lenses naturally drifting toward Evanesse. They captured her quiet interactions, her work ethic, and her constant small acts of kindness around the village.

She was not trying to capture the spotlight or gain camera exposure. In fact, she seemed happiest whenever she was actively assisting someone else with a tedious task.

Ironically, that complete lack of desire for fame made her almost impossible to ignore. Her natural presence drew the eye far more effectively than any manufactured celebrity drama.

By the time evening settled over the village, the production team's internal messaging group was completely inundated with a single recurring topic. Every crew member wanted to know more about the mysterious young woman who had captured everyone's respect.

Who exactly is Miss Evanesse? the messages asked repeatedly across the encrypted chat channels.

Even the early promotional clips released on social media began generating intense viewer curiosity. The audience commentary began shifting away from pure hostility toward intrigue.

[She is exceptionally graceful and striking,] one online commenter noted under a preview clip.

[She seems genuinely kindhearted,] another user wrote. [Look at how she treats the village elders.]

[She is unbelievably capable,] a third viewer added. [She fixed a technical issue and carried heavy equipment without complaining once.]

[Did you see how that high-ranking doctor bowed to her yesterday?] a fourth user questioned. [She must hold an extraordinary position in her field.]

One specific comment posted on a major entertainment forum quickly gained traction, collecting thousands of upvotes within hours: [Who exactly is this woman?]

Another user immediately posted a reply directly beneath it that sparked even more wild speculation across social media platforms:

[More importantly... who exactly is Sylvaniah to have such an extraordinary sister-in-law?]

Then, a final, viral question surfaced on an influential media thread, spreading across online networks faster than the production team could monitor:

[Why would a world-class surgical director bow to a young woman, and why does she call a disgraced actress 'sister' with so much genuine love?]
