No one spoke for several moments.
The old wooden door stood quietly before them, worn by time and covered in a thin layer of dust. It looked no different from every forgotten door inside the ancient castle, yet after everything Ella had witnessed and everything Salvador had confessed, it suddenly seemed impossible to ignore.
Harvey was the first to break the silence.
"So..." he looked from the door to Salvador. "How long have you known this was here?"
Salvador rested his eyes on the aged wood before answering. "Since we moved into this room."
"You never thought of opening it?" Felix asked.
"I did."
Salvador smiled faintly.
"Several times."
His smile slowly disappeared.
"But every time I reached for it, something distracted me."
Ella looked at him.
"Something?"
He nodded.
"A knock on the door."
"A servant calling."
"Someone entering the room."
"There was always something."
Felix folded his arms across his chest.
"That's rather strange."
"It is," Harvey agreed.
