Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Oars, Curses, and the First Kiss

The morning mist clung to the surface of Lake Wawanakwa like a thick, grey shroud, obscuring the jagged pine trees of the far shore. The air was damp and heavy, carrying the scent of cedar and the distant, lonely cry of a loon. It was the kind of morning that felt ancient, as if the island itself were waking up from a long, troubled slumber.

Inside the cabins, the peace was shattered by the shrill, distorted blast of a megaphone. Chris McLean, standing on the central podium with a grin that could only be described as predatory, was ready to end the scheduled rest period.

"Rise and shine, campers! Or don't, and lose! Either way, get your butts down to the dock in five minutes or I'm starting the elimination early!"

The Screaming Gophers and the Killer Bass stumbled out of their bunkhouses, eyes bleary and hair disheveled. They gathered on the sandy shore where eight battered canoes—painted in fading reds and blues—sat waiting at the water's edge.

"Today," Chris began, his voice echoing across the still water, "we're going on a little field trip. Destination: Boney Island! It's cursed, it's treacherous, and it's home to creatures that science would rather forget. Your task: paddle across, hike to the center, build a ceremonial fire, and return. The last team back to the mainland will be hosting a marshmallow-free departure at the Dock of Shame tonight!"

The Strategic Shuffle

Heather's eyes were like ice as they locked onto Ezekiel and Gwen. Even in the early morning chill, the two were standing close together. Zeke was whispering something—likely about the tide or the wind direction—and Gwen was looking at him with a soft, genuine smile that she never wore for anyone else.

Heather felt a knot of pure venom tighten in her stomach. She knew that if Ezekiel and Gwen were in the same boat, their combined focus and Ezekiel's strange, newfound confidence would make them invincible.

"Chris!" Heather called out, her voice cutting through the morning air like a blade. "In the spirit of 'team building,' I suggest we randomize the pairings within the teams. We shouldn't let the same little cliques stay together all the time. It's bad for morale!"

Chris, who lived for chaos and anything that created friction between contestants, didn't even hesitate. "I love it! Heather, for once, your bossiness is actually useful."

With a flourish, Chris produced a hat. Heather's nimble fingers—practiced in the art of a quick sleight of hand—ensured the slips of paper went exactly where she wanted them.

"Gwen and Cody!" Chris announced.

Gwen's face immediately darkened. Cody was a nice guy, but his reputation for clumsiness in physical challenges was legendary. Ezekiel managed to send her one encouraging look before Chris continued.

"Ezekiel and Justin!"

Zeke and Justin locked eyes. Justin gave a firm, masculine nod, adjusting his grip on his paddle. The "Power Duo"—as Justin had started calling them in private—was ready to prove that their alliance was more than just talk.

The Killer Bass: The Shy and the Bold

At the Killer Bass dock, the tension was of a different sort. DJ and Bridgette found themselves paired in the same canoe. Under normal circumstances, they would have been the strongest pair; both were athletic and loved the outdoors. But there was a massive hurdle: the suffocating, electric tension that had been building since the Phobia Factor challenge.

As they climbed into the wobbling canoe, DJ's hand accidentally brushed against Bridgette's as they both reached for the center oar. Both of them yanked their hands back as if they'd been struck by lightning. The canoe rocked dangerously, nearly tipping them into the frigid water.

"S-sorry!" DJ stammered, the tips of his ears turning a deep shade of crimson that rivaled his team's color.

"It's fine, really... just the water... it's cold," Bridgette replied, staring intently at the lake and accidentally paddling in the wrong direction, causing the canoe to spin in a slow, awkward circle.

On the pier, Duncan watched them, rubbing his temples. "Those two are never going to make it if they can't even look each other in the eye."

The Horrors of Boney Island

The Gophers' lead canoe, manned by Ezekiel and Justin, seemed to fly across the water. Justin, who usually preferred to lounge in the sun and let his looks do the work, was digging deep, his muscles straining with every stroke. Ezekiel, with his farm-toughened limbs and the strange, heightened intuition he'd possessed since the meteor strike, dictated a rhythm that even the strongest Bass members couldn't match.

When they hit the shore of Boney Island, the air felt heavy. The trees here were gnarled and twisted, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. Ezekiel felt his "future knowledge" and his sharpened instincts flare up. He knew which paths held the mutant beavers and which caves were best left undisturbed.

"Don't go that way, Justin. The... uh... brush is too thick, and the wind is hitting the rocks wrong. Farm intuition," Zeke lied smoothly, steering them away from a certain trap.

Justin trusted him implicitly. "You're the captain, Zeke. Lead the way."

Deep in the island's interior, Gwen and Cody were gathering tinder for the fire. Gwen was silent, her thoughts drifting to the distance between her and Zeke. Cody, who had watched the way Ezekiel stood by Gwen during the Phobia Factor challenge, took a deep breath. He realized that being the "annoying guy" wasn't going to win Gwen's heart, and he actually cared about her happiness.

"You know, Gwen..." Cody started, yanking a dry branch from a fallen tree. "Zeke is actually a really great guy. I heard him talking about you to the guys last night when you weren't around. He's not like other dudes who just see a 'goth girl' or a trophy. He respects you. He told me you were the toughest, smartest person he's ever met."

Gwen stopped, her hands full of twigs, and looked at the small tech-geek in surprise. "He really said that?"

"Word for word. And look, I know I've been pushy, but... I've realized that Zeke is the one who's actually going to be there for you when things get ugly. He doesn't just talk; he does."

A rare, warm smile spread across Gwen's face. Heather's plan to use Cody's awkwardness to drive a wedge between Gwen and Ezekiel had backfired spectacularly. Cody's honesty had only served to anchor Gwen's feelings for the homeschooled boy even deeper.

Tyler's Great Leap of Faith

While the Gophers were finding their rhythm, the Killer Bass were struggling with more than just the curse.

Tyler had spent the entire day trying to impress Lindsay. He'd tried to crack a coconut for her (and nearly broke his thumb), and he'd tried to provide shade with a giant leaf (only to step directly into an ant hill). Lindsay just blinked her large blue eyes, confused but appreciative of the effort.

During a break while they were struggling to light their ceremonial fire, DJ saw Tyler's desperation and pulled him aside.

"Tyler, man. Stop trying to be a stuntman. It's not your thing. Just give her something from the heart. Remember what she said? She likes 'shiny things.' Look around the shore, man."

Tyler's eyes lit up. He spent the rest of the afternoon scouring the beach. He found the most beautiful, bleached-white shells and a peculiar piece of sea glass—a smooth, translucent shard that shimmered like a diamond in the sunlight. Using a sturdy vine and his surprisingly nimble fingers, he crafted a rustic, beautiful necklace.

The Return and the Moment of Truth

By the time the exhausted teams returned to the mainland, the Gophers had clinched the victory, thanks to the efficiency of Ezekiel and Justin. Heather fumed in the background, but the rest of the team was too busy celebrating Zeke's leadership.

As the Bass canoes docked, Tyler sprinted over to Lindsay before she could head back to her cabin.

"Lindsay! Wait!" Tyler panted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the necklace. "I made this for you on the island. I know it's not real jewelry, but... the color reminded me of your eyes."

Lindsay stopped in her tracks. Her hand flew to her mouth, and a deep blush crept across her cheeks. She took the necklace, her fingers brushing against the smooth shells.

"Tyler... this is the most beautiful thing anyone has ever made for me," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.

She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Tyler's neck and, in front of the entire camp, pressed a long, passionate kiss against his lips. Tyler froze for a split second in sheer shock, his eyes wide, before they fluttered shut. He melted into the moment, realizing that the "loser" label was finally gone. He was Tyler, the winner.

In the background, Ezekiel and Gwen watched them. Gwen stepped closer to Zeke, and though she didn't kiss him, she wrapped her arm firmly around his, resting her head on his shoulder.

"You did good today, 'Farm Boy'," Gwen whispered, the scent of her hair faint and sweet in the evening air.

"I just did what felt right, eh," Zeke replied, his heart beating so hard he was sure she could feel it against her own.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, everyone realized that on this island, the true power didn't come from muscles or manipulation—it came from the bonds forged in the heat of the challenge.

The sun was a red orb dipping into the horizon, casting orange streaks across Lake Wawanakwa. After the return from Boney Island, the camp felt different. The Screaming Gophers celebrated their victory, but after Tyler and Lindsay's kiss at the dock, everyone knew the old social hierarchies were crumbling.

The Big Breakthrough: Eva and Katie

Before heading to the elimination ceremony, Katie found Eva behind the cabin. Eva was punching a massive log with her bare hands, but her movements were slower and less coordinated than usual. Katie took a deep breath, swallowing her nerves, and stepped toward her.

"Eva?" she spoke softly. "I know we might be in trouble tonight. I just... I don't want to leave without getting an answer. I meant what I said during Phobia Factor. I feel something for you. And I thought, maybe, you did too..."

Eva stopped. Her back was still turned toward Katie, her shoulders tense and rigid. Long seconds ticked by, filled only by the distant chirping of crickets. Then, slowly, Eva turned around. Her face, which usually mirrored nothing but rage, was now vibrating with uncertainty and something much deeper.

"Katie..." Eva began, her voice deep and unusually raspy. "I never knew what to do with people like you. You're kind, you're cheerful... and you're annoyingly optimistic. But on this island, you were the only one who didn't back away from me when my temper took over."

Eva took a step forward. Carefully, as if she were afraid she might break the smaller girl, she took Katie's hand in hers.

"My answer is... yes. I like you too. Probably more than I should."

Katie's eyes widened, and she nearly let out a scream of pure joy, but Eva placed a finger over the girl's lips, offering a rare, genuine smile. This moment sealed their bond.

In the Shadows: Gwen and Ezekiel

Gwen gestured for Ezekiel to follow her to a secluded spot on the shore. She didn't want to repeat Cody's praise; something deeper was driving her. She sat in the sand, watching the dark silhouette of the island they had just conquered.

"I've been thinking all day, Zeke," Gwen said, her voice softer than usual. "When I was on the island with Cody, I realized something. I don't care what others say about you. I care that you're the only person here who doesn't want anything from me. Trent looked at me like a song he needed to write. Cody looks at me like a trophy. You... you just let me be me."

Ezekiel felt his throat tighten. "Gwen... I know a lot about how people work. I see their mistakes before they make them. But with you, I have no strategy. When we were in that coffin, I didn't save you because it was a good 'move.' I did it because I was terrified of being here without you."

Gwen turned to him, her eyes shining in the moonlight. "Why are you really here, Zeke? Is it just the money?"

"Originally, maybe," Zeke said honestly. "But now? I'm here to protect what's real. You're the only thing on this island that isn't scripted. I don't want to manipulate you, Gwen. I just want you to know that if everyone else leaves, I'm staying."

Gwen didn't need more words. She made her own choice. She moved in and kissed him—a slow, deep kiss that wasn't for the cameras or the game. It was real.

The Bonfire and the Fallout

On the other side of the fire, Harold stood up. He pulled a crumpled paper from his pocket. Leshawna watched him, beaming with pride.

"Leshawna! A haiku for our victory and your beauty!"

"Brown sugar skin glows,

Stormy heart, a proud spirit,

I would row for you."

Leshawna's eyes lit up at the "spicy" verses. She stood up, lifted Harold off the ground in a massive hug, and branded his cheeks with red lipstick kisses before kissing him deeply. Harold stood there, covered in lipstick, looking like a champion.

The Killer Bass Elimination

At the Bass camp, Duncan was fuming. The team had lost because they were too focused on romance.

Izzy, hanging from a tree, whispered the plan: "Vote Katie. Eva's gone soft because of her. If Katie leaves, Eva gets her edge back."

At the ceremony, Eva, Katie, and Harold all voted for Duncan (Harold wanting revenge for the bullying). Bridgette voted for Izzy, spooked by her intensity. But Duncan, Izzy, DJ, and Tyler (convinced by Duncan) voted for Katie.

"Katie, you do not get a marshmallow," Chris announced.

Eva snapped. As Katie sobbed her way to the boat, Eva stood up, towering over Duncan, Tyler, and DJ.

"You'll pay for this!" she hissed. "Except for Harold, I'm going to hunt every single one of you down!"
