Chapter 5 - The Open World

Walking out of the gate with nothing but the clothes on his back and the small coin pouch he had hidden in his sock, Frank headed out to try and find his place in this world. "Gaining strength is a given. If that is how all knight act to those below them then I need to get stronger.

With the stone walls behind him and the open expanse of the new world awaiting exploration Frank must decide what he will do. The threat level is unknown and the excitement flowing through the air could be cut with a knife.

Leaving the city without looking back Frank walked forward down the same cobblestone path that he walked down when he first got to this new world. Grabbing a random stick to use as a walking stick Frank started down the road. Only time will tell what he will be able to achieve.

...

Four days later

...

"Braaagh, Barrrak Haaaa" A small goblin shouted at one of the larger goblins. Clearly panicked the little goblin tried getting its attention but to no avail. Eventually on of the larger goblins got annoyed and kicked the little green thing away. Picking itself up the little goblin grabbed a stick and tried to sprint at on of the larger goblins with it.

But before he could even get within whacking distance the branch expanded with smaller tendrils around its arm. Then as suddenly as it began, it ended. The thornier end of the branch grew out and pierced into the chest of the small goblin.

"Grawwww? Acheeeeeee RAACHEE" Seeing that the young goblin died right in front of him the largest goblin started screaming. Well 4.5 feet is quite tall for a goblin but compared to a human they were still quite small. They ran over to the fallen smaller goblin but it was already too late. Its corpse was bleeding profusely.

Screaming in the night the larger goblin wailed and pounded the earth with its club. It didn't even realize that two of the other three goblins scummed to the same fate. It picked up the little goblin and ordered the others to do something, but there was no response. He looked around to see the vines hanging from the trees holding his companions by the neck. Broken, their death was instant, not letting any sound out.

He turned just to see the third goblin gagging as the vines lifted him up. Scared and confused, the only goblin left started running and running. This forest was its home, he had to run and tell the chief. But as he was running a root tripped him, smashing his head into the nearby stone he died on impact. In his last moments he could have sworn that the stone wasn't there 5 seconds before.

"Well that was easy enough. Although it would have been better if it was quicker. Those wolves are relentless." Pulling out the canine teeth for proof of the kill Frank headed back to the town. He had been staying on the outskirts of a small town called Benns. Earning money from selling and killing goblins, the local witch wanted their teeth for some reason. He was happy to give them as long as he got paid.

It had been an annoying day as one of the local nobles sons decided he was the target for their verbal abuse, but he ignored it. The locals would probably be more mad for him killing a noble rather than a couple guards.

"I'll just find somewhere else to sleep. Shame, that tree was a perfect advantage point and they burned it down without a second thought." Walking back to Benns Frank decided to take the scenic route. It had been less than a month still that he was brought to this world but he could barely think about doing his previous job, sucking up to those rich snobs.

He had truly grown, well in this case shrunk. His pockets barely contained any coppers left. His food cost and all his other needs had taken away all of his money. He wanted to save at least 20 silvers in case he needed to run again. Better to start off somewhere new with some money instead of nothing.

Plus when he took out a silver to trade for food at the local bar everyone stopped and gave a shocked look. Apparently only the nobles could afford to just carry around silver. Even if 100 coppers is equal to one silver that doesn't mean that silver coins are just out for the trade. Only nobles and merchants are lucky enough to get some.

To cover up casually giving out a silver he yelled "DRINKS ON ME," and walked to the bar side. Everyone else raised their glasses to them and drank until they were knocked out drunk. He didn't like seeing them passed out but he kept his cool and didn't drink, he hadn't ever scared that he would turn into his father.

"If someone like my father with a middle level mutation got upset on this planet I don't know how these people could stop him. Sure I'm in a small town but still from what I have seen these people don't have an ounce of "magic" or mana as they call it here. Nor do they have mutations or other special abilities."

"Hey Terra, anything good on your hunt today?" One of the guards at the entrance asked. They were mostly just common humans who just made sure that no children went out into the wild while the adults weren't with them.

He had introduced himself by his last name since it was something he could remember. He liked it better than Frank anyway. Throughout his time in the small town of Benns he had learned many things from his own speculations and the knowledge of others. The young witch helped out a lot too, he had given Frank, known as Terra now, a sort of crash course on the magic system of this world.

Well there wasn't one uniform magic system. In reality it was a giant mish mash of different power systems that were barely held together by the guide. The guide being the Gods way of monitoring the users. Each system had different tiers that related them to the other systems.

For instance a mage or witch would be rank 1-9 with sub-categories. That could match up with the martial artists ranked mortal to divine with their own sub-categories. There were an infinite amount of different systems held under the guides banner, but there were some that fought against the guide.

Such power systems that went against the guide were labeled for death. They were called Dividers, or as a whole the Division. Chaos and destruction was their main goal, they were hunted, often to extinction, or until the guide deemed them too weak to fight back.

"Some notably systems are the ODIC, the Emporeans, and certain unique powers that the people evolve with." The witch explained. "But for the most part they are suppressed down in the south which is basically barren so there's no worry about them."

Snapping out of the memory Terra realized that he was just standing in  front of the gate randomly. "Oh yeah, well there wasn't much interesting out there. Although there were a couple more goblins out and about compared to yesterday and the day before that's probably me and my bad luck."

Looking confused the guard asked "Well how many did you see?" Marco was the guards name. He was on the younger side at about 20 years old. Being the oldest in a large family Marco was responsible and leads groups quite well.

That and many other reasons lead him to becoming a guard leader second only to the guard captain and the village chief. Even at a young age he was praised and pushed harder to work and get stronger.

"Well I saw a couple while looking for some animals to hunt. But then I came across three larger goblins and one smaller one, which is weird because I thought that the younger goblins would stay in the nest until they were stronger."

"So about 6-7. In one day that's too many, especially so close to the town. I'll be right back, Krik your in charge while I go find the village chief. By the way, welcome back Terra," Walking towards the center of the town Marco disappeared swiftly.

"I swear that boy works himself to exhaustion. He needs to travel the world, expand his horizons, meet some new women." Krik said sighing with a perverted smile on his face. He was a rank 4 warrior who was capable of fighting off almost any creature in the surrounding forest by himself.

Suddenly another older man smacked Krik's head "Idiot, not everyone is as lustful as you. Although I agree he does need to see the world. Rank 3 at age 20 is impressive in itself. That's not even counting all of the time he practices his sword skills." He was one of Kirks friends who had survived this long.

Some of the other older men started shaking their head in agreement. They were far past their prime but Marco was just barely starting his. "Alright guys, good night. I need to find somewhere to sleep tonight." Terra said walking through the gate.

"Damn those brats still bothering you? If you need then I'm sure Rhuro, the witch up the hill, would allow you to stay for a small fee. He's weird but keeps to himself for the most part, as you know you've met him before." Krik said.

"No worries, I'll find a spot right outside of town after I get some food in me. I'm fine sleeping outside the walls, its like a home away from home." Terra replied.

"Alright, be safe. And don't worry, the next round is still on you, Bhahahaha." They all started laughing remembering his first day in town.
