Chapter 949 - 948-A Question of Loyalty(2)

"Then how did you achieve it?" Tsume demanded, her voice carrying a note of barely contained frustration. "The Eternal Mangekyō isn't something that just happens. You need another Sharingan, you need a transplant, you need—"

"I achieved it through means that I'm not going to discuss right now," Renjiro interrupted, his voice carrying a note of finality that made it clear the topic was closed. "What matters is that the elders can't prove the cells caused the evolution. Nobody can prove that Hashirama cells can trigger an EMS transformation because nobody has ever tried."

He explained his counterargument, his proposal to test the theory through controlled experimentation, and his offer to sacrifice part of his remaining sample for the test. He described the silence that followed, the way the elders had refused to even consider the experiment, the realisation that had dawned on him.

"They couldn't risk it," Shikaku said, his voice carrying the particular satisfaction of someone who had just solved a complex puzzle. "If the experiment succeeded, if Hashirama cells could genuinely enhance Uchiha abilities, the entire balance of power within Konoha would shift. Multiple Uchiha could potentially acquire the Eternal Mangekyō. The clan would become too powerful to control."

"Exactly," Renjiro confirmed. "Their refusal wasn't about scientific uncertainty. It was about fear. They're terrified of empowering the Uchiha, and they're willing to destroy me to prevent it."

The revelation hung in the air, the political implications settling into the consciousness of every clan leader present. The elders weren't simply trying to remove Renjiro from power; they were trying to prevent a shift in the village's power structure that could threaten their own positions.

Renjiro continued, describing the vial that Koharu had produced, the chakra signature that it contained. He explained how he had dismantled the evidence, infusing Koharu's chakra into his own Hashirama cells to demonstrate that chakra signatures could be deliberately implanted, that the vial proved nothing except that someone wanted it to prove something.

The clan leaders processed this information in silence, their expressions shifting as they absorbed the implications. The elders' evidence was constructed around association rather than proof, around inference rather than fact. Someone could deliberately create a trail leading back to Renjiro, could manufacture evidence that appeared damning but was actually meaningless.

Then Renjiro described Hiruzen's intervention, the way the Third Hokage had rejected immediate execution but supported removing him from command. He explained Hiruzen's reasoning; that nobody should be able to confront Orochimaru and survive without something unusual happening, that an arrangement was likely, that the circumstances were too suspicious to ignore.

Inoichi's expression shifted, his analytical mind working through the implications. "Hiruzen supported your appointment as Jōnin Commander. He backed you despite opposition. Why would he suddenly support Danzō's accusation?"

"Guilt," Renjiro said simply. "Hiruzen's weakness isn't political loyalty to Danzō. It's guilt surrounding Orochimaru. He discovered Orochimaru's underground experiments, saw the dissected children, and chose not to kill his former student. That decision has haunted him for years and has created a psychological blind spot that Danzō is exploiting."

"Guilt can distort judgment even in experienced shinobi," Shibi observed, his voice carrying the particular detachment of someone who had spent years studying human behaviour from a distance.

"The larger danger," Renjiro continued, his voice carrying a note of cold certainty, "isn't the accusation itself. It's public belief. Even if every piece of evidence can be dismantled individually, a sufficiently repeated narrative can become accepted truth. If enough Jōnin believe I may have betrayed Konoha, my position becomes politically unsustainable regardless of actual guilt."

Shikaku nodded slowly, his pipe sending a thin trail of smoke into the misty air. "Danzō doesn't need a conviction. He needs enough doubt to make you politically radioactive. He's not trying to prove you're guilty; he's trying to make you too controversial to support."

He paused, his eyes narrowing with calculating interest. "Therefore, we shouldn't try to defeat Danzō by proving he's evil. That's what he wants. He wants you to attack him personally, to appear defensive, to make the confrontation about personalities rather than evidence."

"Then what do you suggest?" Renjiro asked.

Shikaku leaned forward, his voice carrying the particular intensity of someone who had spent years mastering the art of strategy. "We attack the procedure. The Jōnin assembly in one week is now the critical battlefield. Don't make it about Renjiro versus Danzō. Make it about evidence standards. Make the elders explain their chain of evidence. Force them to distinguish fact from inference. Have witnesses and clan representatives challenge inconsistencies."

He paused, his gaze sweeping across the assembled clan leaders. "The Jōnin already know Danzō's reputation. Attacking him personally could actually make you appear defensive. Instead, let Danzō make the accusation. Force him to prove every step. Let him hang himself with his own evidence."

Renjiro nodded, recognising the wisdom in Shikaku's strategy. But even as he agreed, another thought was forming in the back of his mind, a realisation that the elders had already demonstrated their willingness to bypass normal procedure. They had called an emergency council without consulting the Hokage. They had presented evidence that could be manufactured. They had shown that they were willing to destroy him through any means necessary.

"The upcoming assembly may not actually be their intended battlefield," Renjiro said, his voice carrying a note of cold certainty.

Before he could elaborate, Inoichi suddenly froze.

The Yamanaka clan head's expression changed, his eyes widening, his fingers pressing against his temple. The movement was sudden, unexpected, and immediately recognisable to everyone present; a high-priority Yamanaka transmission, the kind of communication that was reserved for emergencies.

The atmosphere changed instantly. Choza stopped eating, his massive hands freezing mid-motion. Tsume's hand moved toward her weapon, her body coiling with readiness. Shibi's kikaichū reacted subtly throughout the forest, their movements shifting from surveillance to defensive positioning. Shikaku immediately asked whether there had been a border emergency, his voice carrying the particular urgency of someone who had already begun calculating the implications.

Renjiro's EMS focused entirely on Inoichi, his enhanced perception picking up every detail; the elevated heart rate, the shallow breathing, the tension in his jaw. Something was very wrong.

Inoichi ended the transmission, his face pale, his breathing unsteady. The composure that usually characterised the Yamanaka clan head had cracked, revealing something that looked almost like fear.

"Inoichi?" Shikaku asked, his voice carrying a note of careful concern. "What is it?"

Inoichi looked directly at Renjiro, his expression carrying a weight that made the air feel heavy. When he spoke, his voice was quiet, almost reluctant, as if he wished he didn't have to say the words.

"The Intelligence Division has received an emergency report. Danzō has not waited for the Jōnin assembly. He has already submitted an executive petition to the Hokage Tower."

The room went silent, the mist seeming to press closer, the shadows deepening.

"The petition bears Danzō's signature, Homura's signature, and Koharu's signature. They are invoking the Wartime Espionage Act."

Tsume's voice cut through the silence, sharp and demanding. "What are they using it for?"

Inoichi hesitated, his gaze still fixed on Renjiro. The tension became almost unbearable, the weight of unspoken words pressing against everyone present.

Finally, he spoke.

"Danzō is demanding that the Yamanaka Clan be legally ordered to take Renjiro into custody before nightfall. The stated purpose is a Psycho-Mind Transmission probe. They intend to search your memories directly. Their stated justification is to determine whether you collaborated with Orochimaru. They want to tear through your memories to 'prove your innocence.'"
