Chapter 947 - 946-The First Cut

Far beyond the borders of the Land of Fire, where the earth grew cold, and the sky seemed to press down with the weight of forgotten ages, a subterranean cavern sprawled through the depths of the world like a wound that had never healed.

A small white spore emerged from the cavern wall, its surface smooth and faintly translucent, pulsing with a slow, rhythmic cadence that suggested something alive, something aware. The spore expanded, the surface splitting open with a wet, organic sound; a sound like tearing flesh, like the breaking of a cocoon. From within the split, White Zetsu emerged, his body sliding free of the stone as if he had been born from it, as if the cavern itself had birthed him.

Obito was already present, standing near one of the stagnant pools, his single visible eye fixed on the rippling surface of the water. He had been waiting; that much was clear from his stillness, from the patient set of his shoulders, from the way his presence seemed to fill the space with a cold, unnatural calm. The orange mask that covered his face caught the faint light of the fungi, the spiral pattern seeming to shift and move in the uncertain illumination.

"Obito," Zetsu said, "Danzō took the bait."

Obito did not turn. "Explain."

"Danzō accused Renjiro of conspiring with Orochimaru, of stealing Hashirama cells, of treason against the village. The accusation was made publicly, before essentially the entirety of Konoha's leadership."

"Renjiro is now officially under suspicion," Zetsu concluded. "He faces a public trial before the Jōnin in one week."

Obito's reaction was not excitement. It was not triumph. It was something quieter, something colder; a deep, abiding satisfaction that settled into his bones like the chill of the cavern. His single visible eye narrowed slightly, the Sharingan within spinning with a slow, deliberate rhythm.

"It was easier than I expected," he said, his voice carrying a note of distant observation. "Danzō's willingness to believe the evidence was… remarkable. His hatred of Renjiro made him blind to the inconsistencies."

Zetsu tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "Was it wise to leak so much information to him? He might eventually realise that the evidence did not truly originate from Orochimaru."

Obito finally turned, his gaze fixing on Zetsu with an intensity that made the air seem to grow colder. "Danzō's obsession with Renjiro blinds him. He sees what he wants to see; he believes what he wants to believe. His hatred has made him easy to manipulate." A pause, then, with a note of dark amusement: "Both of us have one eye, Zetsu. But his metaphorical blindness is far greater than mine."

Zetsu considered this, his body shifting as he absorbed the information. "How did you acquire the material? Orochimaru had disappeared for an extended period. Obtaining something directly from him would have been… difficult."

Obito nodded, acknowledging the accuracy of the observation. "Orochimaru's absence made direct acquisition impossible. Instead, I worked with what I could obtain from Renjiro's seals." He paused, his gaze drifting toward the cavern wall, toward the patches of glowing fungi that clung to the stone like parasites. "Renjiro distributes and sells seals throughout Konoha. His chakra is embedded in hundreds of objects, scattered across the village like breadcrumbs. It was a simple matter to acquire chakra-infused material connected to him."

He turned back toward Zetsu, his voice carrying the particular satisfaction of someone who had solved a complex problem. "I deliberately infused that chakra into Hashirama cells. The connection was manufactured; the evidence was fabricated. But Danzō believes he discovered it. He believes Orochimaru is the source. He believes he has uncovered a genuine conspiracy."

"The truth," Obito concluded, "is irrelevant. What matters is what Danzō believes."

Zetsu processed this, his expression shifting through several subtle variations. "I assume the purpose was to help Danzō destroy Renjiro."

Obito shook his head, a small, almost imperceptible movement. "My objective was never Danzō. Danzō is a tool, nothing more. My objective is Renjiro's position inside Konoha's defence structure."

"Renjiro is too strategically valuable to eliminate directly. As Jōnin Commander, he has access to Konoha's military structure, authority over elite shinobi, and influence among the clans. His relationship with Minato makes him almost untouchable through conventional means."

He paused, his gaze fixing on the distant darkness of the cavern. "Simply killing Renjiro would be difficult, and it would potentially turn him into a martyr. His death would galvanise the village, would unite them against a common enemy. Disgracing him, however; that is much more useful. My eventual attack on Konoha to extract the bijū cannot proceed while both Minato and Renjiro are operating at full capacity."

He began to count off the threats, his voice carrying the weight of extensive analysis. "Minato is already a mastered Flying Thunder God user; his speed is legendary, his combat instincts honed through years of war. Renjiro is now another mastered Hiraishin user, capable of the same instantaneous movement that makes Minato so dangerous. Worse, Renjiro possesses the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, which grants him additional perception and combat options that are difficult to counter."

He paused, allowing the implications to sink in. "One Hiraishin master is already dangerous. Two coordinated Hiraishin masters make escape nearly impossible. Renjiro's EMS gives him perception advantages that would allow him to track my movements, to anticipate my attacks. His sealing abilities make the Nine-Tails extraction even more complicated; he could potentially create barriers, containment fields, techniques designed specifically to counter my plans."

His voice hardened, the cold certainty of a strategist who had calculated every variable. "Attacking Konoha against both of them simultaneously would essentially be near suicide. Therefore, Renjiro must be removed before the real operation begins."

Zetsu's body shifted, his expression carrying a note of understanding. "You intend for Konoha to destroy him for you."

Obito's lips curved into something that was not quite a smile. "I don't need to defeat Renjiro. I need Konoha to do it for me, politically. The village's own paranoia becomes the weapon; Danzō provides the accusation, the elders provide institutional pressure, the Jōnin trial provides public humiliation and uncertainty. The goal is to make Renjiro feel that Konoha has betrayed him. Why fight one of Konoha's strongest defenders when you can convince Konoha to push him away itself?"

Zetsu considered this, his expression thoughtful. "Even if Renjiro loses his position, that doesn't guarantee he will simply disappear. What if he continues to interfere with our plans? He is still extremely powerful. He could act independently, could investigate suspicious activity, could interfere with your future operations."

Obito acknowledged the problem with a slight nod. "Renjiro is not fully Uchiha, but he is still part Uchiha. More importantly, he has demonstrated that he cares deeply about his clan and his place within Konoha. If Konoha publicly brands him a traitor and attempts to strip away the position he spent years building, I expect his loyalty to fracture."

He paused, his gaze drifting toward the cavern ceiling, toward the miles of stone and earth that separated him from the world above. "I don't need Renjiro to become evil. I simply need him to stop seeing Konoha as worth protecting. Once he becomes politically alienated, he may leave. He may become independent. He may become hostile toward the leadership. Most importantly, he will no longer be standing beside Minato when I eventually attack."

Zetsu nodded slowly, his expression carrying a note of genuine admiration. "The plan is already producing results. Danzō believes the evidence. The elders believe they have leverage. Renjiro has been publicly accused. Minato is being forced to deal with internal instability. The Jōnin are now divided."

Obito raised a hand, cutting off the congratulations. "The work isn't finished. Removing Renjiro from the defence structure isn't enough. We need to fan the flames of discord inside Konoha. The village must be unstable, divided, vulnerable. Only then can the final operation proceed."

Zetsu's expression shifted, his curiosity evident. "What do you intend to target next?"

Obito was silent for a long moment, his gaze fixed on the distant darkness of the cavern. When he spoke, his voice carried a weight that had not been there before; something deeper, something darker.

"The same strategy must now be applied to the Uchiha clan."

Zetsu's eyes widened slightly, his body shifting with surprise. "The Uchiha?"

Obito nodded, his expression unreadable behind the orange mask. "We need to increase distrust between the Uchiha and Konoha's leadership. We need to encourage the village to fear the clan, to see them as a threat rather than a part of the community. The objective is not simply to destroy the Uchiha physically. It is to make the eventual collapse of their relationship with Konoha inevitable."

Zetsu understood. His expression shifted, his body relaxing as the implications settled into his consciousness. "You intend to do to the Uchiha what we just did to Renjiro. Turn Konoha against one of its own."

"Renjiro was never the endgame," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "He was the first obstacle to be removed."

His gaze drifted toward the distant ceiling, toward the miles of stone and earth that separated him from the world above. Somewhere, far away, Konoha was beginning to tear itself apart. The village was turning on one of its own, was questioning the loyalty of its defenders, was planting the seeds of its own destruction.

And Obito would be there to harvest what grew.

"The first cut has been made," he said, his voice carrying the cold satisfaction of a strategist whose plan was unfolding exactly as intended. "Now we must ensure that the wound does not heal."
