Chapter 425 - 424-Then war is the only option

The hushed murmurs and quiet deliberations of the gathered clan heads came to an abrupt halt the moment the doors at the end of the chamber swung open.

"Creak!"

The creak of old hinges echoed through the vast room, and every conversation ceased as all eyes turned toward the figure stepping inside.

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, entered with the deliberate grace of a man who carried the weight of the entire village on his shoulders. His long, flowing robes of crimson and white trailed behind him, the Kage's hat resting atop his greying head. His features were ageing yet firm, his dark eyes sharp as they swept over the gathered leaders, gauging their expressions, sensing the undercurrents of tension that lingered in the air like an unspoken challenge.

Flanking him, as they had for years, were the two oldest elders. Both moved with the quiet authority that came with years of experience, their expressions unreadable, their very presence serving as a reminder of the old guard, the generation that had shaped Konoha into what it was today.

As the trio entered, the air in the room seemed to shift, the quiet murmuring of the gathered leaders dissolving into silence. Conversations that had moments ago been whispered in shadowed corners or exchanged through veiled glances were abandoned.

Hiruzen strode to the centre of the chamber, stopping just before the grand wooden table where the clan heads were seated.

He let the silence linger for a moment longer, letting his presence settle before finally speaking.

"Shall we begin?"

A collective nod rippled through the room. None dared to voice dissent, not here, not now.

Hiruzen exhaled slowly, then clasped his hands behind his back, his expression grave. "The Kage Summit has concluded, and the situation in the Five Great Nations has shifted." His voice was steady, calm, but those who knew him well could detect the steel beneath his words. "I will provide you with a full report on what was discussed. What you do with this information—how you choose to interpret it—will shape the course of our village's future."

The room remained silent, waiting.

Hiruzen's gaze swept across the chamber before he continued. "First and foremost, Sunagakure has formally aligned itself with Kumogakure."

A ripple of unease passed through the assembled clan heads. Some shifted in their seats; others remained stone-faced, though their eyes betrayed the calculations running through their minds. The implications of this were severe.

Chōta Akimichi grunted, folding his thick arms over his chest. "So the rumours were true. The Third Kazekage is taking a stand with the Raikage."

"It was expected," Hideo Hyūga murmured, though his brows furrowed slightly. "Suna has been struggling economically for years. Kumo likely promised them support in exchange for an alliance."

"But it means we've lost a potential ally," Shiba Nara interjected, his tone unreadable. "And we have gained a formidable enemy in their stead."

Hiruzen gave a slow nod. "On the other hand, we have secured an agreement with Kirigakure. A defensive pact has been established with both nations, ensuring that if war does break out, we will not stand alone."

Daichi Uchiha, who had been silent until now, leaned forward slightly, his dark eyes narrowing. "A deadlock," he mused. "Konoha, Kiri, against Suna and Kumo."

Osamu Senju scoffed. "A deadlock that benefits no one. If a war does begin, it will not be a simple matter of two factions clashing. It will be a bloodbath across multiple borders."

Shintai Shimura, who had remained uncharacteristically quiet, now spoke, his voice measured yet pointed. "Is there no possible diplomatic solution with Kumogakure?"

Hiruzen's eyes snapped toward him, the briefest flicker of cold understanding crossing his face.

There it was.

Shintais question was not one of genuine curiosity but of subtle provocation. He was planting the idea that perhaps war could still be avoided, nudging the discussion toward the possibility of compromise. But compromise with Kumogakure meant yielding. And yielding meant weakness.

Hiruzen's voice, when he spoke, was laced with steel. "You misunderstand the nature of our enemy, Shimura-san." His words were clipped, carrying the quiet weight of authority. "Kumogakure does not seek compromise. They seek conquest."

Shiba Nara exhaled through his nose, his sharp mind already several steps ahead of the conversation. "Kumo is war-thirsty," he stated plainly. "They have always been. They do not make agreements unless they stand to gain complete control over the outcome."

A few murmurs of agreement rippled through the room.

Hiruzen gave a short nod. "Kumo has already begun mobilizing their forces. One of our border outposts has been infiltrated."

The weight of his words settled over the room like a dense fog. The implications were clear—Kumo was already preparing for war.

Danzo, who had remained silent until now, shifted slightly in his seat before finally speaking.

"Then war is the only option."

The hush that followed Danzo's declaration was palpable. The man who had so often been the voice of clandestine measures and subterfuge had just spoken in favour of open war—a sentiment that even some of the more militaristic factions within the council found unsettling.

Hiruzen's fingers flexed slightly, the only outward indication of his surprise. He had expected resistance from Danzo, expected a push for covert operations, assassinations, or sabotage—anything but outright agreement. His old friend had never been one to advocate a war without first exhausting every possible underhanded advantage.

And yet, here he was, standing firmly with the Hokage's decision.

Chōta Akimichi exchanged an uneasy glance with Osamu Senju. Though their clans had often found themselves on opposite sides of village politics, both could see the implication in Danzo's words.

"I never expected to hear such an admission from you, Danzo," Chōta rumbled, his deep voice cutting through the thick silence. His large hands were folded in front of him, fingers interlaced as he regarded the elder war hawk with something bordering on suspicion. "You've always been one to advocate for preemptive measures, yes, but not like this. Are you suggesting we march to war without consideration of the costs?"

Danzo met Chōta's gaze with his single uncovered eye, unreadable as ever. "I am suggesting," he said slowly, deliberately, "that we acknowledge reality. We do not have the luxury of hesitation."

One of the younger clan heads, a man from a lesser-known family, leaned forward, his expression unreadable. "Then tell us, Lord Hokage… are Kumo's accusations true?"

The question hung in the air like a poised blade.

Several heads turned in confusion, but those who were more perceptive—those who had long since mastered the art of reading between the lines—realized what had just been asked.

And more importantly, what had not been asked.

Hiruzen did not move, his face remaining carefully neutral.

But the sharp, knowing gaze of Shiba Nara flickered toward him.

He already knew the answer.

And in that moment, as the room fell into silence once more, every leader in that chamber realized one simple truth.

There were secrets at play. Secrets that had yet to be revealed.

And soon, one way or another, the truth would come to light.
