Two weeks after the papers dubbed him the "Blue-Eyed Vigilante," Adrian had built a solid routine: patrol after Sophia's shift, hunt low-tier stragglers, and clear out before the midnight DODC rotation.
He shouldn't have trusted the peace.
Perched on a rooftop at the edge of the hazard zone, Six Eyes picked up something wrong. The usual scattered static of cursed energy was converging, weaving into coordinated threads.
Grief doesn't coordinate, Adrian thought. It pools.
He dropped down and moved toward the energy signature. In the shadow of a collapsed parking structure, he found his targets.
Not a single spirit. A pack of six.
They looked vaguely canine, built from shadows and fused human hands knuckling together into makeshift paws. All six heads swiveled in perfect unison, locking hollow sockets onto him.

Spirits didn't flank. They didn't form tactics. Yet these six split immediately—two flanking left, two circling right to block his escape, and two holding the front.
Grade 3 stats, Grade 2 tactics. Fantastic.
When the front pair lunged, Adrian backed toward a narrow service corridor between two buildings. He reinforced his arm with cursed energy just as claws raked his forearm, drawing blood before he slammed a counter-strike into the beast's ribs. He shoved it aside and dove into the corridor.
The narrow space funneled them into a single line, but the pack adapted instantly. One spirit rammed another from behind, using sheer momentum to crash through his defense.
Adrian's back slammed hard into brick. Claws tore through his side.
They weren't just coordinating—they were learning from each other's deaths.
Instead of retreating, Adrian activated Six Eyes to map the structural flaws around him. Hairline cracks in the brick, a rusted fire escape, and a half-severed load-bearing beam right above them.
If I can't beat them one by one, I'll use the building.
He channeled a dense pulse of cursed energy and shattered the beam.
BOOM.
Half a ton of concrete collapsed, instantly crushing the two lead spirits into black mist.

Four left. Adrian pushed through the dust, closing the distance before they could reorganize.
The rest was a brutal, bloody brawl. He traded blows in the tight space, relying on Todo's combat instincts to dodge lethal strikes while delivering reinforced punches to skull after skull.
When the final spirit dissolved, Adrian dropped to one knee, breathing hard through bleeding side wounds.

Something is accelerating the ecosystem, he realized, wiping blood from his lip. Grief from the invasion is feeding the curse growth. The smart ones are surviving and evolving.
He stumbled back to the apartment an hour later. Sophia took one look at his blood-soaked shirt, grabbed the first aid kit, and pointed to a chair.
"Pack of six," Adrian grunted as she cleaned his cuts. "Coordinated tactics. The ecosystem is evolving faster than it should."
"Great," Sophia muttered, bandaging his ribs. "Add it to the board."
She grabbed a black index card and wrote: PACK BEHAVIOR — EVOLVING SPIRITS.
She pinned it next to the DODC shift maps. "You survive the fights. I map the threat. That's the deal."
Adrian stared at the board. The spirits were getting smarter, but so were they.
Outside in the dark, the surviving remnants of the hazard zone regrouped, learning from the blood shed tonight.
