"Allen," Emily mumbled as she stared at her husband, who was still holding Noah in his arms, his face twisted with exhaustion and grief.
"I... I failed, Emily. I failed yet again," Allen muttered, his voice barely holding together.
Emily's eyes trembled as she shook her head.
"You... You did your best," she said softly, forcing a weak smile as she walked over to him and wrapped her arms around her husband.
Lily stood silently, staring at her family... especially her father.
"D-Dad... Why did he do that? Why did you let him hurt you?" Lily asked, still unable to understand what she had just witnessed.
She had brought her uncle there under her father's orders, yet her uncle had looked at her father and spoken those cold words as though her father meant nothing to him.
Even after everything, her father had been worried about him.
Allen slowly lifted his gaze toward his daughter and managed a faint smile through his tears.
"I... I deserved it."
