Chapter 17 - The puzzle

Alex's eyes sparkled with determination as he examined the monument more closely. The carvings weren't just decorations they formed a puzzle, intricate and ancient, requiring patience and intellect to decode.

Kira and Vile stood beside him, their gazes fixed on the cryptic symbols etched deep into the stone. Kira's brow furrowed in concentration, her fingers lightly tracing the carvings. Vile, however, had a gleam of excitement in his eyes as he adjusted his special glasses. Lyra hovered nearby, watching with quiet curiosity, while Kaelor leaned against a tree with his arms crossed. Rose observed silently, her eyes sharp, and Ethan and Liam stood slightly behind, alert.

"Guys, I think I've got something," Vile said suddenly, his voice bright with excitement.

Kira turned to him. "What is it?"

Vile tapped his glasses. "These carvings are more than symbols they're a message. My glasses decoded it into a poem."

Mya, stepping forward, leaned in eagerly. "A poem? What does it say?"

Clearing his throat, Vile recited:

"Where shadows dance, and darkness reigns,

Seek the key, in ancient remains."

The words hung in the air. The team exchanged glances; Kaelor raised an eyebrow, Rose studied the monument carefully.

Alex's expression turned serious. "It's a clue. But to what?"

Kira shook her head. "Might be pointing to a location."

Vile nodded. "My glasses pick up strange energy readings from these carvings. Whatever it is, it's important."

Before they could theorize further, the mysterious woman who led them here stepped forward. Her eyes sparkled with amusement.

"I can show you the way," she said, calm but teasing.

Alex narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?"

The woman tilted her head, lips curling into a sly smile. "Follow me."

The team hesitated. Rose shifted closer to Alex, Kaelor straightened, Ethan and Liam exchanged wary looks. Finally, Alex nodded. "Alright. Lead the way."

The woman walked deeper into the forest, her steps light. Alex's team followed, Lyra beside Kira, Rose near Alex, Kaelor muttering, Ethan and Liam close behind.

The forest thickened; trees twisted overhead, blocking sunlight. The air felt charged, almost suffocating. Rose scanned shadows, Kaelor scowled at the surroundings, Ethan and Liam stayed alert.

After hours, the woman stopped before a massive stone door, half-hidden by moss and vines, covered in carvings more intricate than the monument.

"What is this place?" Alex whispered.

The woman's eyes glinted. "Entrance to the ancient ruins. Here, you will find the answers you seek."

Excitement and unease battled within Alex. As he reached for the door, the woman's hand shot out.

"Wait," she said sharply. "You must first prove yourselves worthy to enter."

Alex narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?"

She gestured to a pedestal before the door. On it rested a small, intricately carved stone orb.

"This is the trial," she explained. "To open the door, you must solve the puzzle and claim the orb. But the trial is not for the faint of heart. Fail, and the forest will claim you."

A tense silence fell. Lyra's eyes widened, Kaelor scoffed quietly, Ethan swallowed hard. Rose stayed calm.

"Let's do it," Alex said, resolve in his voice.

The woman stepped aside. The team gathered around the orb, faint patterns glowing on its surface, shifting like a puzzle. Rose leaned in, Lyra watched with fascination, Kaelor stood ready, Ethan and Liam stayed alert.

Kira muttered, "It's some kind of logic puzzle."

Vile adjusted his glasses, grinning. "This is going to be fun," he said, already calculating solutions.

Mya placed her hand on the pedestal, eyes closed. "There's a strange energy… it feels alive."

The forest seemed alive; trees creaked, shadows flickered, whispers echoed. Sweat beaded on Alex's brow as the orb's lines shifted faster.

Then a soft click. The glowing patterns coalesced into a steady light.

Alex picked up the orb. Warm to the touch, the massive stone door rumbled and slowly slid open, revealing a dark passageway beyond.

"You've proven yourselves worthy," the woman said, smiling. "The ruins await."

Alex tightened his grip on the orb, heart pounding. "Let's go," he said, leading his team into the darkness Rose close behind, Kaelor muttering but following, Lyra and Kira side by side, Ethan and Liam matching Alex's pace.
