Chapter 41 - Sacrifice and death

--

Tae's POV

The doctor made them return Kim to his room. I followed behind, my heart pounding. My baby was alive—just sleeping. I smiled at his peaceful face. But then, I saw it... a tear falling from the corner of his eye.

"Doctor!!" I screamed.

He rushed in. "Look, he's crying!" I sobbed between trembling breaths.

The doctor gave a small smile and leaned in, pressing his stethoscope against Kim's chest. But then... his face changed. It fell.

"W–what?" I asked, my stomach tightening.

"He has a very low chance of surviving," he said quietly.

"I'll do anything—please, just tell me what to do," I begged.

He nodded solemnly and called for nurses to prep Kim for the operating room. "We need to perform a heart transplant within five hours. The risk is 70-30."

"I'm willing," I said without hesitation. "Test my heart—if it matches, I'll give it to him."

The pity in the doctor's eyes nearly broke me. But he nodded.

Just then, three people rushed in.

"Hyung, Shinwoo... Yoongi? What's wrong?"

"We saw them wheeling Kim into the OR," Yoongi said breathlessly.

The doctor explained everything and told them I was ready to give my heart for Kim.

"No, Tae. You can't," Shinwoo said firmly. "I'll do it."

"You barely know Kim! Why would you—?"

"I fell for him," he admitted. "You warned me. I didn't listen. I'm sorry."

I couldn't even be angry. There was no time.

"I'll give mine," Hyung said.

"Hyung..."

"Tae, you already know why."

"I can't live without him!" I cried. "If he dies, I die."

Yoongi stepped forward. "My heart matches his—if I give it, he has the best chance. Let me do this... I'll take it as paying for my sins."

The doctor ushered us all to testing.

"So... it's either me or her," Shinwoo said.

"I'll do it," Yoongi interrupted. "If I stay alive, I won't be able to love anyone else anyway. Let me go. He has the best chance with me."

We didn't have time. We had to let her go.

"Yoonah," I called as she turned to enter the theater.

She turned around with that soft, tired smile.

"I'm sorry... and thank you," I said.

She took my hand. "I'm sorry too. And thank you."

I hugged her tightly, both of us crying.

"I think this is our last goodbye... I'll never forget you. I promise."

She smiled and hugged me one last time.

"Yoongi," Hyung said, standing beside Shinwoo.

She turned to them, still smiling like the strong girl she's always been.

"I'm sorry," Hyung said.

She just shook her head, forgiving him with a smile.

"You don't have to do this, Yoonah," Shinwoo said.

"I want to," she said gently. "It's the least I can do for him."

Hyung kissed her hair, voice breaking. "My little miss trouble... my fighting tiger... I'll look after Kim now. Make sure you go to heaven, okay? I'll come find you when I die."

She smiled through her tears and hugged Shinwoo.

"We didn't spend much time together, but I know you're a good person," he said. "Thank you."

She went in.

Three Hours Later

The doctor came out. We rushed him.

He smiled. Kim was okay. But I couldn't breathe until I asked—

"What about Yoonah?"

"She's awake. She has six hours left," he said. "She asked us to put Kim's heart inside her, just for a little while... she wants to say goodbye."

"Can we see her?" I asked.

He nodded.

---

Inside, Yoonah sat beside Kim, gently caressing his face.

"He'll wake up soon... he's safe now," she said softly.

I rushed forward and hugged her.

"Yoongi... I'm so sorry. I wish I could have given mine."

She kissed my knuckles. "Don't blame yourself. I chose this."

The others joined, wrapping her in a group hug.

"My little fox only has six hours left," Hyung said, voice trembling.

"Yoongi, we'll all miss you," Shinwoo whispered. "Especially Kim... you know how much he loves you."

"I'll miss you too... see you in heaven," she giggled through tears.

I asked the dumbest question ever. "How are you feeling?"

She just smiled and hugged me.

"It made me feel better," she whispered.

"Yoongi, my baby..." Jiang came in, voice broken. She ran to hug her.

"Mom," Yoonah said softly.

"I'm sorry, baby. I couldn't save you. My match was too low. Please forgive me... Mommy is sorry."

"I never held a grudge, Mom," Yoonah whispered. "I love you."

Another round of crying filled the room.

Then Ran-jin came in.

"Mom?"

She nodded, eyes red. "After your father left... you were all I had. My little tiger. I'm so proud of you."

She kissed her on the head. "I'll miss you so much."

Even Old Woo and Grandpa Woo came in. They didn't cry—men of pride—but you could see the sadness behind their eyes.

---

Four Hours Later

Kim opened his eyes.

He looked around at everyone—his family. He took my hand and kissed it.

"Thanks," he whispered.

Then his eyes found Yoonah. She smiled.

"Come here," he said.

She leaned in. He hugged her and kissed her forehead.

"Thank you," he said.

Kim's POV

I woke up, feeling... whole. Too whole.

Everyone looked at me with love. My family.

But something felt off. I was healthy. Too healthy. And I was wearing surgery clothes.

That could only mean... someone gave me their heart.

But none of them would be alive if they did.

Unless... unless we traded places.

And this heartbeat... it felt so familiar.

I held Yohan's hand and kissed it. But no... it wasn't him.

Then I hugged Yoonah—and I knew.

She was the one.

"Yoonah... you didn't have to," I said softly.

Her eyes widened. "Kim—"

"It's okay. It's done. Thank you."

She smiled.
