Trinity now wears an expression of surprise. "Wait perhaps I misunderstood, did you say Gods?"
"No, it's exactly as I said. We've chosen death, because to our understanding, it's the only way to meet the true rulers of these domains and defeat them to become Gods. When you 'die' here, it seems you don't actually just disintegrate into nothing. You actually get sent before the Masters of the Realms, and they'll allow you one chance to challenge them. If you can best them, they will grant your one wish. If you prove yourself truly worthy, they will even make you a God."
"I have never heard of such a thing, but I also am new to this myself, so I won't say you're wrong either. That said, even if it was true, do you truly believe these "Masters of the Realms' would grant you such a great wish? If they're all the powerful beings, then surely they wouldn't want to give others such status? They'd be potentially setting up their own demise. I doubt-."
"You just said you don't know either!" Eirys finds her voice again. "If you don't know, then you can't speak on it. Don't try to tell us we're being foolish. Clearly no one here actually knows just where our souls go after being killed here, so let us have faith that it's possible ok? Leave us be."
Trinity finds their belief to be ridiculous, and even if she doesn't know everything, she feels certain that such a chance would never happen based on all she's learned from Amlith and Symone. However, she can see the sincerity on their faces. "Ok, why do you want to be Gods?"
"None of your business!" Eirys replies curtly. "You don't actually care about any of us anyway."
"Ery…," Ravenna calls her by a name that must be intimate to them. "We don't have nefarious intentions." She looks up at Trinity. "Limbo is lost and broken, I'm sure you're already aware. You say you've returned and plan to restore it to its former glory. You seem to want to stand up against the Lords of Hell too. However, you already said it yourself, the rules of this realm are absolute and you have no power to change them. Not to mention, you seem to be rather close to one of the most important Overlords in Hell just after Lady Amlith. Lady Symone is cordial with you. I don't see how you'd go against the status quo in any situation, no matter how I look at it."
"You may not see, but you also don't know the situation either. You can't judge me so easily. Symone is an Overlord of Hell, yes. However, she doesn't necessarily agree with all they do."
"Maybe so, but with respect, we can't just take your word for it. We are aware of the good Lady Symone has done in Limbo over these years, especially since the fall of the previous queen. However, she can only do so much without ruffling the feathers of the other Overlords, who have domain over the other circles of Hell. Whatever she promised will surely have its limitations."
"You're right, I still don't know that I can trust her fully. However, I'm confident in our shared goal. I'm not sure what change we can achieve outside of Limbo, but within this realm, I do have control. I will make changes for the good of Limbo and the souls who reside here. I will make them respect us again. Symone has agreed to help me in that regard, and that's all I'll ask her for. What will happen further beyond that goal, that's yet to be decided but it will be decided by me."
Ravenna falls silent from the weight of Trinity's resolve. However, Eirys isn't sold. "Big talk, but can you really deliver? You looked as scared as a lamb earlier when facing us. If it wasn't for that woman offering her support, you may have collapsed. You can barely handle the sorting of souls, but you think you'll be able to transform an entire realm? Be real, you're way too weak."
Trinity frowns slightly and Ravenna looks at her friend in concern. However, Trinity doesn't attack. Instead, she decides to bargain. "Ok Eirys, I understand your hesitation and Ravenna you make a compelling case. I am to a degree still bound by the Overlords, and I could be way over my head. There's a lot of unknowns to go around between the three of us. So I have a small proposition for you." She takes their hands and places them on her Scythe at the same time.
"Hey! We didn't give you permission to-," Eirys starts to protest, but Ravenna grips her free hand with her own and she quiets down. They allow Trinity to observe their memories.
Trinity takes her time to observe them. They have always been together, from the time they were born as humans, to the day they were slain in battle while protecting their homeland, and to this day since they've been residing in Limbo due to their unresolved regrets. They were heroic and brave and wanted to make the human world a better place for all. They wish the same for even a dreadful place such as this. They believe in the good of all souls and want to do anything they can to bring universal peace. They are pure souls; perhaps the purest Trinity's met yet. The love they have for everyone only just barely falls short of the love they have for each other. 'Rebirth.'
"You've both met the condition for rebirth, surely you want to take advantage of that opportunity rather than sacrifice your souls for a promise that may not even be a real possibility to achieve?"
"Even so," Ravenna speaks again. "We want to reach an existence greater than ourselves. Rebirth will only suit our needs but do nothing for others. Why should we get to live happily when we know so many others are suffering unjustifiably? We'd be no better than the rest."
Trinity gasps, utterly speechless at their selfless resolve. To still choose death when you can live again happily…she can hardly fathom it. She'd sacrifice everything if she could live as a human together with her mother and Shi. She wouldn't hesitate for a moment. Even if others will suffer.
"I can read the shameless thoughts on your face; you're despicable." Eirys spits the words at her.
Trinity shrugs. "Maybe, but I'm honest. I'm no one so self-righteous that I think I can save everyone everywhere. I'm promising to do what I can as Death Sinner Queen because it was the responsibility handed to me. I need to do something that will make my life feel like it has some meaning. However, yes I can admit it to everyone if you want. I would abandon all of you, this place and this title if it meant I could have my mom, Shi and Sophie back again. I'm not sorry."
"Well, I guess it's nice to hear some honesty for a change. Glad you won't put on any airs then." Morigain enters the conversation as she enters the room, followed by Sinae. "Intake's all done."
"Boss…you'd really abandon me?" Sinae gives her a pout and puppy-dog eyes. "Really, really?"
Trinity rubs her head affectionately, just like a puppy. "I would, I won't lie to you." She presses her forehead against hers. "But not before I exhaust every option possible to take you with me."
Sinae's eyes light up happily. "Yeah, I thought so. I love you Boss!" She nuzzles her with love.
"Wait, you mean you'd actually try to save who you could first? You wouldn't just abandon us?"
Trinity turns back to Eirys, who finally seems to have dropped her aggressive barrier. "Of course I would. I meant what I said about leaving everything behind for my happiness, but I wouldn't just dip without even trying to save who I could. I'm not selfless, but I am reasonable. I can see there's a need for change. I can see there's souls who need help. I want to help them if I can. However, I can't do that alone, which is why I'm building my team." She places a hand on each of their shoulders. "Which brings me back to my proposition. Join my team. Be my knights."
"So, rather than choosing death or rebirth, you're asking us to stay and join the fight for Limbo?" Trinity nods. Eirys looks at Ravenna, and shrugs and smiles. No words needed. "Ok. We're in."
Trinity smiles with satisfaction. "Then welcome to the team, Eirys and Ravenna. We're still ramping up, but Sinae will get you settled later. Same to you Morigain. You will join us, won't you? I know you said you wanted me to help you first, and we still have a bit more to do, but I was hoping you'd join us." She looks to Nyxis, looking to be in pure bliss. "You too, Nyxis?"
"Are you kidding? Of course I'm in!" She stands atop her small mound of corpses. "Where else am I going to have the opportunity to cultivate so many souls for my collection? I'm so in this!"
Trinity laughs awkwardly but smiles at her enthusiasm. "Great, happy to have you here Nyxis."
They all look at Morigain now, who'd been consistently quiet throughout the exchanges. She walks over to Trinity with an air of authority. "I think you're naïve, and still too green for this position." She watches Trinity's face drop slightly. "However, I can tell you have the right spunk we need to get the damn thing done. I believe you will succeed where your mother failed but can't do it alone. So I will join you, but know that I will not butter you up. Your moody friend from earlier was a bit too high strung but was correct. You haven't earned this title yet, but I'm willing to help you do it right. I think all these ladies are going to need some discipline as well."
"Excuse me? Who do you think you are exactly?" Eirys protests. "No one will discipline me!"
Morigain faces the smaller girl and hovers intimidatingly. "You have bark, but no bite shrimp."
Eirys looks absolutely appalled, but bites her tongue. "We appreciate your guidance, elder one." Morigain looks slightly offended by the insinuation that she's old, but lets Ravenna have that.
"Well, let's finish up." She returns to the blue line, only to find that a single soul remains. Before her is a fit and slender woman with melodic blue eyes and matching hair tied in a loose braid. She stares forward, quiet and rigid, seemingly waiting for orders. Trinity carefully takes her hand and places it against the Scythe. She doesn't protest. Trinity only sees a fraction of her memories before dropping her hand with haste. She looks at the woman still undisturbed. "Join me, Azura."
She finally looks up as if she just noticed her there. "If you wish it, I will obey, my commander." Trinity feels a shiver down her spine, as she stifles unpleasant memories that resurged. She turns to face the red group, the 2nd biggest group. "You all have chosen death, are you prepared for it?" Some nod; most don't acknowledge. "Very well. May you rest in peace." She raises her scythe and with one broad slash, dozens of bodies fall to pieces, as blood and guts splatter on the walls.
