Chapter 187 - Chapter 182 Edolas VIII

Cana remembered the first time she had met Karna. At that time, she only wanted to get a few herbs to help her sick mother. She never imagined that one of the wizards she asked for help would turn out to be her father. Moreover, it was Karna who had convinced Gildarts to take her with them. Later, when her mother reunited with her father, she was elated and deeply indebted to Karna for helping her.

When she later joined the guild and heard about Karna's abilities and talent, a sense of admiration formed in her mind. Karna was also the only kid around her age in the guild, so at that time, she had fun playing with her friend.

But that happiness was shattered by the accident that happened later. She still remembered the blood that splattered on her face when Karna took that wolf bite for her. That was the second time she came close to losing someone she cared about. After her mother was cured of her disease, she thought she would never feel that way again—but she was wrong.

She then decided to become strong, to protect the boy who had not hesitated to put his life on the line for her.

As time passed, her feelings of admiration turned into something more. With all the women around her, it wasn't difficult for her to realize what that emotion was and learning it didn't fluster her much. By then, she had a mature outlook on life and wasn't filled with any sort of confusion.

Then came the time when she was kidnapped by Ivan, where she saw another side of him. He was always cautious and smart with his decisions. But that day, he didn't wait for anyone and decided to face an adult wizard—the master's son—in a direct battle to save her. This cemented the feelings she had for him even more.

Then came the first time she felt she had a rival. The mission to face two demons ended with Karna saving another child from being separated from her mother. She still remembered him pointing toward a direction in the storm where he had detected another presence of life. Later, when Ultear joined the guild, she noticed how Ultear often watched Karna from the corner of her eyes. It became clear to her that Ultear had a crush on Karna, but she decided to ignore it. Later, when they finally decided to start dating, it filled her with immense happiness, making her think that everything would be alright.

And once again, fate had a way of reminding her not to be too happy. She still had nightmares about what happened that day. She saw the Drakon explode, injuring her badly enough that she fainted. For a moment, she felt like she was dying—until she woke up with no wounds on her body. She realized Karna had used the Horse Talisman, which could only be used once.

What she witnessed in front of her was even more horrifying. Karna's whole torso was bleeding, and his earlobes were missing. She could see his flesh. She realized what had happened—Karna had torn off his armor, which was fused to his skin, and transplanted it onto her. Before she could even process it, Karna said he loved her as the Drakon completely exploded behind them.

Then came Karna's coma. If not for the Talisman that recharged the next day, the medics who arrived agreed that Karna would not have survived the ordeal of tanking that attack. That day, she realized she could not live without him. Karna Vermillion's place in her heart had surpassed everyone else in her life.

This didn't change even when he revealed that he had knowledge of the future and had come to her home village specifically to save her. Even if he knew everything, Cana knew that the times he had sacrificed himself to save her were not under his control. It didn't diminish the love she had for him. Learning that the god that had brought him to this world had a hands-off approach also made her see that he would still face many risks in his life.

Cana had asked him about his previous life and learned that he had been an orphan with no family when he died. This made her realize that Karna's self-sacrificing behaviour stemmed from his fear of losing the family he had found in this life. Seeing him repeatedly put his life in danger to grow stronger and face threats only increased her nightmares about the times she had seen him nearly die.

Even recently, he had taken 300 lightning lacrima from the Thunder Palace directly to increase his power. Later, she met Laxus and asked him about the intensity of those lacrima, and the result cemented her belief that Karna had little regard for his own life compared to those he held dear.

This led Cana to her current thoughts. She knew that Karna had slightly restrained his suicidal tendencies because of her warning—that if he ever died, she would follow him. To make sure he could not die during a mission, she knew she had to strengthen his will to live.

That's why she suggested Ultear. Even though it was not said out loud, this world promoted polygamy among wizards. With only ten percent of the population being wizards, there was a need for more of them, and since the child of a wizard had a hundred percent chance of being a wizard, a wizard was encouraged to take more wives. If his wife was also a wizard, the potential of their child would increase even more.

So Cana was not against the idea of a polygamous relationship. Seeing the state Ultear had been in these last few years made her think about it even more. Ultear's recent suicide attempt, in which she absorbed that frost dragon lacrima, only strengthened Cana's belief that it should be done. She saw that Ultear's love had reached a level of obsession that was not even a bit less than her own.

Cana never had any ill feelings toward Ultear. Even though Ultear had fallen in love with Karna, she didn't blame her for it—after all, she herself had fallen in love with Karna under similar circumstances.
