What good films are showing in the 2011 holiday season? It's a common question. Hollywood has never disappointed fans of big blockbusters. This industry overflows with visual spectacles and eye-catching oddities, even during the holiday season. North American theaters are packed with various sci-fi, fantasy, and magical films. While many share no connection to real people or real events, they all feature top-tier or wildly experimental special effects, intense visuals, and often startling elements—essentially, "extraordinary characters plus aliens, superheroes, and all sorts of mythical creatures."
Fantasy combined with romance has always been the signature of the Twilight series.
This successful series, beloved by young female fans, has already completed three films, and now approaches the first of its two-part finale, Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.
Hollywood's fascination with vampire-werewolf romance themes has become somewhat saturated. TV screens are already packed with sexy vampires, from HBO's True Blood to The CW's The Vampire Diaries, and even MTV's new series, Teen Wolf, aims to delve deeper into the world of werewolves.
Among them all, though, the Twilight series remains the most popular.
It's widely recognized that Twilight has essentially created its own genre. Even if some bookstores lack a "Paranormal Teen Romance" section, it's not hard to find books about fanged, clawed, or superpowered teens in the young adult section.
Even MTV's Teen Wolf hopes to ride the Twilight wave: first, Twilight fans crave more of these stories; second, after so much vampire content, they might be ready to support a series focused on werewolves.
A week before its premiere, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 had already captured over 75% of the weekly online ticket sales.
As the series nears its end, fans are showing immense enthusiasm.
"We're incredibly grateful for the fans' support. The Twilight series will conclude around this time next year," Matthew, the film's producer and investor, said to the media at the end of the premiere red carpet. "This long journey is reaching its end, but the series finale isn't a farewell—it's a new beginning."
When asked about splitting the last book into two movies, he explained, "Ms. Meyer's final novel is quite long. To capture the story's full scope and not disappoint fans, we decided to divide it into two parts."
Matthew spoke as if the split were purely for the fans rather than profit.
"This installment focuses on Bella and Edward's marriage and newlywed life—and, of course, it leaves a huge cliffhanger for the next part: Bella transforms fully into a vampire by the end, gaining immortality."
Keeping the spoilers limited, Matthew shifted the conversation to next year's final film, "The next one has several large-scale scenes that will be a major challenge—especially the final battle, which spans 25 pages in the book. Adapting those 25 pages into a grand cinematic battle will be incredibly demanding. It will require us to pull together all available elements, show the details of every character's fate, and create a massive and intricate scene. Besides that, portraying each character's background and story in this film is also quite a challenge."
After the interview, Matthew joined the cast for a group photo and headed into the Hollywood Theater.
Amber Heard quickly caught up to him, sticking close as she said quietly, "You haven't called me in a while, Matthew."
"I've been busy filming American Sniper in Southern California," Matthew replied in a low voice. "I just returned to L.A. yesterday."
He turned to her with a smile. "Are you free tonight? Want to come over?"
Amber Heard nodded eagerly. "Absolutely! I'm free!" She moved closer, lowering her voice, "I've been missing your game room."
Matthew spoke in a soft tone as well. "I'll be waiting by the back door after the premiere."
Amber Heard nodded again, then asked, "Have you got any new toys?"
"Of course," he said, giving her a gentle pat on the back. "They'll definitely feel fresh and exciting."
They headed toward the VIP lounge, and when Matthew saw they were alone, he asked quietly, "How's things on the Harvey Weinstein front?"
"He's very patient," Amber replied. "He plans to take two to three years to completely take you down."
Matthew, equally patient, said, "You don't need to do much, just look after yourself."
These words warmed Amber's heart. Harvey Weinstein didn't compare to Matthew.
"I'll keep you informed about anything from Harvey's side," she promised, sounding resolute. "If you need me to do anything, just say the word."
Matthew shook his head. "Keeping things as they are is enough."
He'd never placed much weight on Amber Heard as a strategic piece; she was more of a backup.
Frankly, the ongoing plan would be fine with or without Amber.
But to Amber, this support felt significant.
Why wouldn't she stand by someone who seemed ten times better than Harvey Weinstein? There was no way she'd choose the overweight producer who was known for demeaning women. Why let someone like him mistreat her?
Beauty deserves a prince—one who has wealth and looks.
Reaching the lounge, Matthew let the conversation trail off. From the looks of things, Harvey Weinstein knew he couldn't achieve his goals quickly, so he'd developed a long-term strategy involving Amber. In some ways, he and Weinstein were similar; both could be ruthless.
To combat a ruthless opponent, a person had to be equally cunning.
Maybe virtue could conquer evil, but Matthew was quite sure his limited virtues couldn't outmatch Weinstein's boundless depravity.
And frankly, he'd prefer to let Weinstein spend more of his energy trying to manipulate Amber.
Substances can corrode a person, but it takes time to fully bring down a powerful figure.
Weinstein would need time, and so did Matthew.
Besides, training Amber in a few "games" was actually fun; she was adventurous and open to trying new things.
Matthew didn't mind rewarding her, and he'd prepared an upcoming role with significant potential for her.
"Hey, Matthew!"
A clear voice interrupted his thoughts. "What are you thinking about? I called you several times, and you didn't answer."
Turning, he saw Lily Collins in a white cocktail dress standing beside him. He quickly replied, "Just thinking about work."
Lily Collins pouted. "You said you'd call me, but you never did."
Matthew shrugged helplessly. "I didn't mean to; work's just been hectic."
Before Lily could respond, Helen Herman approached, accompanied by a young girl.
"Hi, Helen." He greeted her, then turned to the girl. "Mackenzie, you've grown taller."
The young girl, Mackenzie Foy, responded politely, "Thank you for the opportunity, Matthew."
She even bowed slightly in gratitude.
Matthew waved it off. "No need to thank me. You're excellent—no one would have refused."
Recently, Mackenzie Foy had signed with Helen Herman, and since Lily-Rose Depp wasn't currently acting, Mackenzie was the first choice for any child roles that came up.
As she grew, Mackenzie had avoided the fate of many child stars who become less appealing with age. She retained her bright eyes, white teeth, and increasing charm.
Audiences worldwide seem to have a soft spot for child actors like her.
To be precise, an adorable girl like Mackenzie Foy is capable of winning over both male and female viewers.
Currently, she holds important roles in two projects at Thirteen Studios: Bella and Edward's daughter in Breaking Dawn and the daughter of the victim in Insidious.
Matthew thought for a moment, realizing that if she were on the other side of the Pacific, she might have been dubbed "the nation's daughter."
"How's filming for Insidious going?" Matthew asked.
Mackenzie's soft voice responded, "I just started, but the scenes are scary. Helen told me I won't be able to watch the movie when it's released."
Matthew reassured her, "When you're older, you'll be able to watch it."
There wasn't much choice—since Insidious was still in production, Mackenzie and other young actors would only be able to walk the red carpet when it premiered next year, unable to even enter the theater.
After chatting a bit with Mackenzie and Lily Collins, Matthew moved around the lounge, greeting others. After all, this was a Thirteen Studios production, and he was the official host.
Matthew was undoubtedly the center of attention, and no sooner had he found a free moment than someone else approached.
