"A fully active Iconian Gateway?!"
Admiral Kuumaarke's voice echoed across the primary comm-channel, her magenta and violet image on the main viewscreen as her eyes widened in utter disbelief. She stood beside Captain Praxas on the planet's surface, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. "Right here in our very own nebula? All this time?"
The more she contemplated the sheer magnitude of the statement, the harder it was for her scientific mind to accept that a marvel of galactic engineering had been drifting on the fringe of her home system completely unnoticed.
"Afraid so, Admiral," Commander Neil O'Reilly replied over the open link, leaning back in the captain's chair aboard the TGC Nexus bridge. "Saw it with my own two eyes. Dr. Kayuli picked up the anomaly using our long-range sensor array, and we just got back from our initial reconnaissance run aboard the Alliant. It's an unfinished Dyson Sphere—no terraformed landmasses or habitable domes inside—but the Gateway is sitting right near the stellar corona. And it is very much alive."
Kuumaarke tapped her chin thoughtfully, her expression shifting from raw shock to deep, analytical reflection. She was an Admiral of the Lukari Concordium, but at her core, she remained a scientist driven by discovery.
"Well... I suppose it makes sense why it was never cataloged," Kuumaarke conceded softly. "The ancient Kentari wouldn't have cared about a hollow metal frame if it didn't yield an immediate financial return or industrial material... and when our own ancestors were desperately searching the stars for a second chance at life, a broken hunk of metal inside a radiation nebula would have been ignored in the mad dash for a habitable Class-M world."
Neil nodded, looking to the screen for operational guidance. "So, Admiral? Shall I contact Starfleet Command and the Alliance to send over an engineering strike team to begin locking down the infrastructure?"
A sudden, sharp realization struck Kuumaarke. She looked up, her posture instantly straightening into that of a planetary leader.
"Allow me to make that call, Commander," she insisted, her tone leaving no room for debate. "I want to officially stake a claim in the name of the Lukari Concordium. That sphere resides squarely within sovereign Lukari space. The political, strategic, and economic ramifications of this discovery cannot be overstated for what it means to my people. Historically, we Lukari have lacked major raw exports to bolster our standing in the Alliance economy—even more so now as we rebuild our terraformed homeworld. But an active, inter-quadrant transit gateway right on our doorstep? That puts Kentar back on the galactic map overnight."
"It'd turn your system into one hell of a pit stop, that's for sure, Admiral," Neil chuckled, a wry grin spreading across his face. "Deep Space 9 is going to be furious. Anyone want to be the one to tell Captain James Kurland that his beloved station is about to become obsolete overnight?"
Praxas let out a deep, booming laugh from the planet's surface. "I think I'll let Fleet Admiral Quinn deliver that particular piece of bad news."
The Captain's expression sobered slightly, his tone shifting into smooth diplomatic professionalism. "In all seriousness, Kuumaarke, you have a rock-solid legal case. As of right now, neither Starfleet nor the Khitomer Alliance holds any territorial claim to that structure. It's sitting right in your backyard. Make the call to Alliance Headquarters and establish your baseline sovereignty."
Praxas then turned his gaze back toward O'Reilly on the viewscreen. "In the meantime, Neil, take the Alliant back out to the sphere. Assemble a proper, fully equipped landing party. See if you can locate the primary command spire that governs the Gateway's routing subroutines. Best case scenario? You re-establish a stable link between that gate and Alliance Command in the Solanae Sphere. Worst case, you give our Iconian tech specialists a clean jump-off point when they arrive. I won't pretend anyone on the away team is fluently literate in ancient Iconian script, but the database should have enough cross-referenced linguistics for basic console recognition."
"I believe I can offer some assistance on that front, Captain," a calm, synthesized voice interrupted over the tactical comms.
Chief Medical Officer Tegris stepped into the frame in sickbay. The tall El Aurian-Borg doctor offered a slight nod, his cybernetic optics gleaming under the overhead lights.
"While my primary designation remains Chief Medical Officer, my residual Borg collective subroutines remain entirely functional," Tegris explained smoothly. "I can download Starfleet's entire linguistic database on Iconian glyphs and structural syntax into my secondary cortical buffer. I will be fully fluent in written Iconian by the time the Alliant drops out of warp at the sphere."
Praxas blinked, caught slightly off-guard by the sudden interruption, but he broke into a warm smile. "Oh! T! Well, damn. If you can master an ancient extinct language in the time it takes to prep the Alliant, by all means! The away team is going to need medical personnel on site anyway. Permission wholeheartedly granted."
"Thank you, Captain," Tegris replied, bowing his head before turning toward the transporter to prepare his gear.
"And if I may add one more condition..." Kuumaarke spoke up, holding up a slender finger to draw attention back to her holographic feed. "I would like Lieutenant Lusaali to join the away team as well. She is the Concordium's official representative aboard the Nexus, and I want a Lukari boots-on-the-ground presence when you cross the threshold into that command center."
Kuumaarke rubbed her temples, letting out a heavy, weary sigh. "It isn't that I doubt the honesty or goodwill of your crew, Captain... but I will not allow the legitimacy of our claim to be questioned later—especially by our neighbors, the Ferengi. The absolute last thing my government needs is the Commerce Authority dragging us into the Grand Nagus's courts over some obscure, back-door salvage loop-hole."
She shook her head, a smile breaking through her annoyance. "I swear, having the Ferengi Alliance as our closest trading neighbor is a bigger headache than the Kentari ever were."
On the bridge and on the surface, Neil and Praxas threw their heads back and laughed out loud.
"Understood, Admiral! Completely fair point," Praxas laughed off, waving a hand in agreement. He turned his attention toward the helm station on the Nexus bridge. "You heard the Admiral, Lieutenant. Stand down from your post and join Commander O'Reilly's team. The Nexus isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Go make history and stake a claim for your people."
Lieutenant Lusaali, the young Lukari officer with bright, glowing pink and purple skin markings, beamed with pride. She stood up from her console and offered a crisp Starfleet salute. "Aye-aye, Captain! Admiral! It would be an honor!"
"Don't have too much fun out there, everyone," Praxas smiled, his eyes glinting with excitement. "Report back to us the second you gain access to the command node. Praxas and Kuumaarke out."
The viewscreen flickered as the transmission closed, leaving Commander O'Reilly standing on the bridge with a grin on his face. He tapped his combadge.
"All right, away team, you heard the man," Neil announced over the shipwide channel. "Dr. Tegris, Lieutenant Lusaali, Dr. Kayuli... pack your bags. We're going back to the sphere."
