We walk back to the inn in silence, the only sound the drumming of the rain on the cobblestones. The girl, whose name, Tomas managed to pry from her, is Elara, is still stiff in his arms, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and confusion. She's a small, scrawny thing, all sharp angles and big, scared eyes. She looks like she hasn't had a decent meal in weeks.
May is the first one to see us when we walk in. She's sitting at the table with Lucas, a half-eaten honey cake in front of her, her face a sticky mess. Her eyes light up when she sees us, and then they widen in surprise when she sees the girl in Tomas's arms.
"Who's that?" She asks, her voice full of innocent curiosity.
"It's a friend." Tomas says, his voice a low grumble. He sets Elara down on her feet, and she immediately shrinks back, her eyes darting around the room like a trapped animal.
