"All knowledge and learning is merely recollection." - Plato
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the fragile silence of the bedchamber did not bring peace.
Instead, a profound, crushing weight descended upon the room. The flickering candlelight seemed to freeze mid-dance, casting long, static shadows across the stone walls. Joffrey stared at his pale hand, but his mind was racing, entirely consumed by the memory of the burning skies, the mountains of the dead, and that freezing, ancient gaze that had locked onto his soul before he fell.
What manner of existence was that? It had not felt like a man, nor even a god of the legends he knew. It felt like a void.
An active, hungry vacuum out to devour everything it touches.
The physical strain of holding back Joffrey's volatile, childish consciousness, combined with the lingering rot of the fever, suddenly hit him all at once. His vision blurred. The stone walls of the Red Keep dissolved into a dark, swirling fog. His lungs refused to draw air, and with a silent, breathless gasp, his consciousness fractured and faded into the dark.
He did not wake up in a dream. He woke up in an expanse.
There was no ground beneath him, yet somehow he stood. There was no sky above him, yet a soft, luminescent mist swirled in every direction, glowing with the pale, iridescent colors of a dying star. It was utterly silent, yet the silence was loud, carrying a faint, multi-toned vibration that resonated directly in his chest.
"You possess a highly unusual mind for one so young," a voice spoke.
The sound did not come from a single direction. It was a chorus. It carried the rustle of a billion autumn leaves, the deep, grinding shifting of tectonic plates, the crash of distant oceans, and the quiet, synchronized breathing of a sleeping continent. It was not a voice of malice or warmth. It was The Voice.
Joffrey turned, but there was no body to face. "What are you?"
"I am the beginning and the end of the song, the breath before the first dawn and the ash after the final hearth" the chorus resonated, the mist swirling gently around his ankles. "I am the green, the stone, the blood, and the bone. I am the collective memory of this star. To one of unusual understanding, I am the consciousness of the world you now inhabit."
The prince's sharp mind, immediately began to parse the information. "Planetos. The world itself."
"A dying world," the being corrected.
A sudden tremor ran through the misty expanse, and for a fraction of a second, the glowing fog turned a deep, bruised purple. "The vision you experienced before your descent was not a mere dream. Your soul, raw and unbound by a physical vessel, brushed against a potential horizon. A future where the cold consumes all, and the river of life is frozen to its bed."
"The Night King," Joffrey said, his voice steady despite the sheer scale of the entity before him.
"In the stories I know, he was a weapon created by the Children of the Forest. A tool that got out of hand. But what I felt... whatever it was that locked its gaze on me... that was not just a rogue weapon."
"The First Ones called them the Children, but they were childish indeed," the collective consciousness whispered, a collective sigh of profound grief echoing through the space. "In their desperation to survive the migration of men, they sought a power beyond the boundary of the mortal plane. They carved a wound in the fabric of existence, intending to draw upon the natural flow of the world's blood. But their understanding was conceptual, primitive, and blind."
The mist darkened, projecting faint, shadowy silhouettes of ancient figures driving a shard of dragonglass into a man tied to a weirwood tree.
"They did not touch the blood of the earth," the voice continued. "They reached too deep, through the veil, and touched the cold void. They invited an infernal and eldritch force, an outer hunger that exists between the stars. The entity they created, the one you call the Night King, is not a mere ice-demon. He is naught but an anchor. A physical bridge designed to pull those outer terrors into this mortal plane. If the bridge is fully crossed, the world will not simply freeze. It will be unmade and made in their own image."
The weight of the revelation settled heavily in Joffrey's chest. It took him every iota of will he could summon to stay calm. The simple fantasy plot he thought he knew was gone. This was an existential infection.
"And you brought me here to stop it," Joffrey said, his analytical mind already calculating the logistics of such a war. "But why me? Respectfully man… I was a nerd, a strategist with what would probably be considered an unhealthy habit with games, a man who spent his life analyzing systems from behind a screen while trying to survive the day. I am no savior."
"The native souls of this world are bound to its song or destiny," the being explained, the mist swirling closer, gently touching his ethereal form. "They are threads in a tapestry that has already been woven toward ruin. To tear the tapestry, we required a thread from outside. A foreign soul with a mind built for optimization, calculation, and absolute focus. A mind that views the impossible as a system to be mastered. A discordant note"
The entity paused, and Joffrey felt an incredibly strange, invasive warmth slide through his consciousness, as if a billion light-years of memory were being sorted through in the span of a single second.
"We have peered into your Anamnesis," the collective voice whispered, vibrating with a strange sense of dawning fascination. "I have gleaned the truths of your past existence. The concepts of power, space, and warfare that your mind has cataloged. Because you conceptualize the world through structured rules and progression, I shall weave those very templates into boons to aid you in the fight to come."
The mist suddenly surged, wrapping around his soul like a cocoon of liquid light.
"First, your vessel," the voice commanded, and Joffrey felt a deep restructuring begin at the very core of his spiritual form. "Your physical form is weak, bred from stagnant blood. I have set a blueprint upon your flesh. As your soul grows stronger, your body will optimize itself, burning away all impurities, genetic flaws, and imbalances until you reach the absolute peak of mortal physical potential."
An intense, burning heat flooded his limbs, followed immediately by an absolute, crystal-clear clarity. The chaotic, petulant noise of the original Joffrey's brain was utterly silenced, overwritten by a perfect, razor-sharp cognitive engine. It felt like you we're driving a Koenigsegg after using a Prius your whole life. Bad example, but the point still remains....
"Second, your weapon," the voice echoed, as shimmering, spectral shapes of legendary armaments—a massive, brutal axe, a thick, unyielding tower shield, and a elegant, heavy sword flashed briefly in the mist around him. "Your mind holds memories of the Royal Arms of Kings. I have anchored this conceptual framework to your soul. You must forge and bind these weapons yourself using the rare, magical materials of this world, but once bound, they will sleep within your soul, free of the life-draining cost of your memories, waiting to be summoned at your whim."
Joffrey gasped as a sudden, heavy pressure settled into his spiritual chest, a hollow space waiting to be filled with the weight of steel and soul.
"Third, your mastery," the entity declared. "To wield the arms of kings, you must know them. I grant you Eternal Arms Mastery. The conceptual understanding of every weapon of war. The moment your hand touches a blade, a spear, or a bow, your body and mind will know its weight, its reach, and its lethality as if you had practiced with it for ten thousand lifetimes."
The knowledge flooded in. It was not a chaotic rush of memories, but an innate, quiet muscle memory that settled deep into his spirit.
"And finally, your movement," the voice whispered, the mist around them beginning to spin in a violent, rapid vortex. "The ability to bend the distance between two points. Teleportation. In your current, weak frame, a single jump of a few feet will leave you physically spent. But as your soul and body optimize, your reach will extend, allowing you to walk through the spaces between reality."
The vortex of mist collapsed inward, rushing into Joffrey's chest in a blinding flash of golden and silver light.
"The barrier is thinning, Joffrey Baratheon," the collective consciousness of Planetos spoke one final time, its voice fading into a distant, echoing rumble. "The Great Enemy is already walking. Change the flow of destiny. Do not let the void consume our home."
With a sudden, violent gasp, Joffrey's eyes flew open.
He sat straight up in his bed, his chest heaving as he drew a deep, unobstructed breath. The suffocating fever that had plagued his lungs was entirely gone, replaced by a cool, clean vitality. The air in the room no longer felt simply cold; he could feel the subtle, microscopic currents of drafts, the precise distance between his bed and the stone hearth, and the exact weight of the silk sheets resting on his legs.
He looked down at his small, pale hands.
The skin was still thin, but the slight tremors of weakness were gone. He closed his eyes and reached inward. Deep within his soul, the spark was no longer dormant. It was a cold, perfectly formed core of spatial energy, humming with a quiet, lethal frequency.
He looked at the heavy brass candlestick resting on the table across the room. He focused on the space right beside it, feeling the invisible thread of reality that connected him to that spot.
He willed himself to move.
A sudden, silent pop echoed in the room. His vision blurred for a microsecond, and then his boots touched the cold stone floor right next to the table.
Instantly, a wave of profound physical exhaustion washed over him, his knees buckling slightly. He caught himself on the edge of the table, his heart hammering against his ribs, his breath coming in shallow gasps.
A three-foot jump, and he was already out of breath. The body was still far too weak.
But as he looked back at the empty bed across the room, a cold, slow smile spread across the face of the crown prince.
The game had officially changed.
