Although having a metallic ship with excellent defensive capabilities and a steampunk engine was certainly a huge advantage in many situations, there were still a few things that it simply could not outperform compared to a standard wooden ship, especially when it came to taking advantage of the natural conditions of the sea. For example, when strong winds were involved, a ship relying entirely on sails could realistically move faster than one powered by an engine, since an engine-powered ship carried considerably more weight than a standard wooden vessel that had been designed to remain relatively light and make full use of the wind pushing against its sails. It was one of those situations where having something more advanced did not automatically mean that it was better at absolutely everything.
