Just as Cao Xiaomei left, Shangguan Xi followed into the kitchen to check on the bird's nest soup. Seeing that Cao Xiaomei wasn't there, she lifted the lid of the stew pot and found the soup almost ready. She decided to scoop out a portion to bring to Madam Wu.
She still hadn't been able to conceive a child, and surely Madam Wu was upset. Bringing her the bird's nest soup might help show her filial respect.
Shangguan Xi carried the bird's nest soup upstairs to Madam Wu's room.
