Lexi pushed open the heavy wooden doors of St. Anne's Church like she owned the place. The late-night quiet inside was broken only by the low murmur of Father Kieran's voice as he spoke with a nervous parishioner near the altar. The man was wringing his hands, talking about strange lights over the cemetery and asking for prayers. Kieran's answers were calm, practiced, the kind of gentle reassurance he'd given a hundred times before.
Kai strolled in behind Lexi, hands in his pockets, looking around the pews with mild curiosity. He spotted the young priest organizing hymnals near the side door and drifted that way without a word.
Lexi walked straight down the center aisle and dropped onto a bench halfway up, crossing her legs. The smile on her face was pleasant enough, but it never reached her eyes. She waited until the parishioner finally left, nodding awkwardly at the two strangers on his way out.
Kieran turned, recognized them, and the calm on his face slipped a fraction. "Miss Branson. I wasn't expecting visitors this late."
"Funny thing about nights in this city," Lexi said, still smiling. "They get longer when people start dying."
Behind him, Kai moved. Fangs slid down with a soft click. He grabbed the young priest by the collar, yanked him close, and sank his teeth into the man's neck. The priest's eyes went wide. A muffled sound escaped him as Kai drank deeply, eyes half-lidded, clearly enjoying every pull of blood. The wet sounds of feeding filled the quiet church. When he finally pulled back, blood streaked his chin and the priest's collar. Kai held him up a second longer, then dropped the body. It hit the stone floor with a heavy, final thud. Kai wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, then casually snapped the man's neck for good measure.
Cami O'Connell chose that moment to walk in through the side entrance, arms full of folded altar cloths. She froze when she saw the body, the blood, and Kai standing over it. The cloths slipped from her hands.
Lexi kept her eyes on Kieran. "You must have heard by now. Two of ours are dead. Damon Salvatore and Katherine Pierce. That's unfortunate for everyone. If this were a real war, their deaths might have been acceptable. Casualties happen. But this was never a war. We came into this town peacefully. The witches made that possible when they called one of the Originals here in the first place. That alone was a crime. Then they threatened his child's life. Used that child as leverage to control Klaus. Another crime. All of it was overlooked. Forgiven. We even did their bidding and got rid of Marcel. And what did we ask for in return? Just our home back. You all could have gone about your lives. Instead you assaulted Damon. There was a scuffle, nothing major. Then you plotted. You connived. And you managed to kill not one but two of our people who had nothing personal against any of you. So I'm asking you, Father… why? Why risk everything?"
Kai stepped over the priest's body and leaned against a pew, still licking a bit of blood from his thumb. "I'm not much of a talker like Lexi. I'll go straight to the point." He nodded toward Cami, who stood frozen near the door. "Your dear niece here has been compelled. She knows exactly what she's doing, but she has no power to stop it. I could tell her to walk outside right now and put a bullet in her own head, and she'd do it. She'd know she was about to die the whole time. She'd feel every second of it. And she still wouldn't be able to stop."
Kieran's face drained of color. The calm priest was gone. "Stop this. Please. Let her leave. She's got nothing to do with any of it. Whatever you want from me, take it. Just don't hurt her."
Kai only smiled, the expression empty. "Nothing. She's the message. Not just her."
Lexi pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and held the screen toward Kieran. The recording started. Sybil's voice, soft and melodic, filled the quiet church. On the screen Sean O'Connell stood at the edge of a high cliff, eyes glassy, body swaying slightly under the siren's hold. The wind tugged at his clothes. The drop below was long and final.
Kieran's knees nearly gave out. He grabbed the back of a pew to stay upright. Two surviving family members. The last of his blood. Both of them already under someone else's control, already walking toward the same end. The sound that left his throat was raw, the sound of a man watching the last pieces of his world slip through his fingers.
Kai watched him break with mild interest. "They came into the world together," he said quietly. "Only fair they go out the same way."
Lexi stood, slipping the phone back into her pocket. "Think carefully about the next words that leave your mouth, Father. And the next choices you make. We'll be listening."
They left him there, Cami still frozen by the compulsion, the dead priest cooling on the floor, and the recording of Sean's last possible moments echoing in Kieran's head.

Across the city, Stefan and Viktor stood at the edge of the witch quarter. The air shimmered faintly where the boundary spell had been reinforced. It was stronger than anything the ancestors had managed before. Viktor tilted his head, studying the invisible wall. He could feel it. Magic was only part of what held it up. Something else sat underneath—older, heavier, and not entirely of this world.
He chuckled once, low and cold.
"All of this is inevitable," he said, loud enough for anyone on the other side to hear. "You are only just delaying it. That's all. Your deaths are still coming. You just bought yourselves a little more time to be afraid."
A figure stepped out of the shadows on the far side of the boundary. Davina Claire stopped a few feet from the line, chin up, eyes steady.
"Time is all we need," she said, "to get something that can actually kill you."
Viktor's mouth curved into a sharp smirk. "Finally. The kid shows herself. Tell me… who gave you the courage to go against the Originals?"
