Holding a glass from the table, Vera Wave cheerfully extended it towards Kris Cooper. "Honey, this toast is for you! I was in the wrong today. I hope you can be magnanimous and forgive me... Can you let this go, please?"
Kris Cooper looked at her from across the table. His gaze swept over her dress, and he frowned slightly. She was chastising him about spending money just a while ago. Considering it would be a long time until her next payday, she must be running low on cash.
"After dinner, play cards with me."
Was he finally willing to acknowledge her?
Vera's smile grew even brighter.
"As long as you're not mad at me, honey, we can play anything you want."
Kris Cooper picked up his glass and gently clinked it against hers.
"Happy Birthday."
"Thank you, honey."
Seeing him finally relax a bit, Vera heaved a sigh of relief, took a sip of her drink, and began to eat without any pretense.
