Chapter 2 - Chapter 1:Prologue

Prologue: The Registry That Could Not Read

In all the ages the universe had been counted, the Dao had never once failed to read a newborn.

It failed on a rainy night at Qinlan Estate.

* * *

The old man had been meditating for four days when the flower moved.

He sat in the hall at the estate's heart, eyes closed, breath slow. A being of his level did not sleep. He rested the way a mountain rests, by holding still while the world moved around him.

On the low table before him sat a single flower in a plain jade bowl, no larger than his palm. He had carried it out of the Null Hollow years ago, from a place he did not like to remember. It had never wilted. It had never grown. He had tried everything a man of his standing could try: sword intent, Ether, Insight. It had given back nothing. It was a flower.

Tonight, a single petal lifted, slow as a breath, and settled again.

His eyes opened.

Then the world went quiet.

His Ether, which had flowed through him as constantly as blood for longer than most nations had existed, stopped. The rain on the roof stopped sounding like rain. The hall became the inside of a held note.

The old man was among the strongest beings in the city. In that breath, he was afraid.

His Authority of the Sword stirred, thin and cold, and dragged him halfway free of the stillness. Halfway was all it could manage. He felt the world stop without being fully included in it, like a man watching a river freeze from the bank.

Then the breath ended. The rain resumed. His Ether resumed. The flower lay closed in its bowl as though nothing had happened.

He did not move for a long moment. Nothing could stop a being like him, not for the space of a breath, not for anyone.

Something just did.

Across the courtyard, a child began to cry.

* * *

In the east wing, Lin Yuxi lay back against the pillows with her son in her arms.

He was small and red-faced and giggling, and he did not look like a child born into anything extraordinary. Qin Wenhao stood at the foot of the bed. His hands, steady on a sword for thirty years, did not seem to know what to do with themselves.

"He's loud," Wenhao said.

"He's yours," said Yuxi.

Neither of them said what they both knew. They were not ordinary people. In this world nobody was. But they had built a quiet life and a calm, unremarkable name, and they meant to keep it that way for this boy.

Nobody in the room noticed the stillness had come and gone. Nobody ever did.

* * *

Far beyond the estate, beyond the city of Veyrin and the realm it sat in, the Dao turned its attention toward a single new life.

It did this for every birth. It had done so since before there were names for such things, and it did so now without haste and without warmth.

It paused.

Every life that had ever been born had come to it whole. The Dao looked, and what it knew of all things told it what to write. This time, it looked at the child and found a name it could not read, a bloodline it could not see, and nothing at all to say what he was.

It looked again.

[Reading failed.]

The Dao did not wonder. It was conscious, but it was bound by its own code, and the code held no place for wonder. It held only the order of things: what exists is read, and what is read is recorded. A being the Dao could not read was a break in that order. But a break was not a threat, and the Dao did not move against what had not yet harmed the balance.

So it did the only thing the code allowed. It let the entry stand, empty, and turned its gaze elsewhere.

[Registration incomplete.]

It would look again at his first Dao Test.

Far away, across a distance that did not matter to it, something very large and very old opened one eye.

It had felt the breath that did not happen. Few beings alive had. The dragon turned its gaze, briefly, toward a modest city called Veyrin, and toward a child too young to know he was being looked at.

It considered him for a moment. It found the matter beneath its notice, and it closed its eye.

Almost.

In the east wing, the baby stopped crying and opened his eyes.

They were dark and steady, and in each, a single white circle sat where the light should have been.

Yuxi's breath caught. She looked up at Wenhao, who was still staring at his own hands, and then back down. The circles were still there, small and pale and perfectly round, as if someone had set a coin of moonlight in each eye.

She blinked. When she looked again, they were gone. Only a newborn's dark eyes looked back at her, calm and ordinary.

She said nothing. She held her son a little closer, and told herself it was the lamplight.

In the meditation hall, in a jade bowl that had not stirred in twenty years, a single closed flower turned, very slightly, toward the east.
