Chapter 63 - Chapter 63

I decided to try to negotiate with the figure, using our words to persuade them to give us the dagger. As we approached the pedestal, the figure stepped forward, its eyes fixed on us with an unnerving intensity.

"Who are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

The figure didn't respond immediately. Instead, it regarded us with a calculating gaze, as if sizing us up.

"I am Kael, the guardian of the temple," it said finally, its voice low and gravelly. "And you, Riven, are a trespasser."

I stood my ground, meeting Kael's gaze. "We're here for the dagger," I said, my voice firm. "The one that can kill the master."

Kael's expression didn't change, but I sensed a flicker of interest behind his eyes.

"Ah, yes," he said. "The master. A powerful foe, indeed. But do you have what it takes to wield the dagger's power?"

I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. But Lunaria stepped forward, her voice confident.

"We'll do whatever it takes to stop the master," she said. "We've come too far to turn back now."

Kael regarded her for a moment, then nodded. "Very well. I'll give you a choice. You can either answer a riddle, or complete a task. If you succeed, the dagger is yours. But if you fail..." He paused, his eyes glinting with a hint of menace. "Let's just say you won't be leaving this temple alive."

I exchanged a glance with Lunaria and Thane. We knew the risks, but we also knew we had to try.

"What's the riddle?" I asked, my voice steady.

Kael smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Here's the riddle: What can be broken, but never held? What can be given, but never sold?"

I frowned, thinking hard. I knew I had to come up with an answer quickly, before Kael lost patience.

As I pondered the riddle, I noticed a small inscription on the pedestal. It read: "The answer lies in the heart."

Suddenly, the answer came to me. "The answer is a promise," I said, my voice confident.

Kael's expression didn't change, but I sensed a flicker of surprise behind his eyes.

"Very good," he said. "You are correct. A promise is indeed something that can be broken, but never held. And it is something that can be given, but never sold."

He stepped aside, revealing a hidden compartment in the pedestal. Inside, the dagger lay waiting.

But just as I reached for it, Kael's expression turned cold. "Wait," he said. "There's one more thing. You see, I've been watching you, Riven. And I've been waiting for you."

His eyes seemed to bore into my soul, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.

"What's going on?" I asked, my voice firm.

Kael's smile grew wider. "You see, Riven, you're not just any ordinary warrior. You have a certain... potential. And I'm willing to make you a deal."

I narrowed my eyes, wary. "What kind of deal?"

Kael leaned forward, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "I'll give you the dagger, but in return, you have to do something for me."

I hesitated, unsure of what to do. But Lunaria spoke up, her voice firm.

"We're not interested in making deals," she said. "We just want the dagger."

Kael's expression turned cold, and he raised his hand. The air seemed to ripple with energy, and suddenly, we were surrounded by a group of temple guardians.

"I'm afraid it's not that simple," Kael said, his voice dripping with menace. "You'll have to fight for the dagger."

We drew our swords, ready to face the guardians. Kael watched us with a cold, calculating gaze, his eyes seeming to bore into our souls.

The guardians charged, their movements swift and deadly. We fought bravely, our swords clashing with theirs in a flurry of steel and sparks.

Lunaria and Thane fought with precision and strength, taking down guardian after guardian. I joined the fight, my sword slicing through the air with deadly precision.

The battle raged on, the sound of clashing steel echoing through the temple. I fought with all my might, determined to claim the dagger and defeat the master.

As we fought, I noticed that the guardians seemed to be weakening, their movements slowing. I pressed my advantage, striking down guardian after guardian.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last guardian fell to the ground. We stood panting, our chests heaving with exhaustion.

Kael nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Well done," he said. "You have proven your worth. The dagger is yours."

I approached the pedestal, my heart pounding with excitement. I reached out and took the dagger, feeling its power coursing through me.

As I held the dagger aloft, the temple seemed to come alive. The air pulsed with energy, and I felt a sense of pride and purpose.

We had done it. We had retrieved the dagger.

But as we turned to leave, Kael's voice stopped us. "Remember, Riven, the power of the dagger comes with a great cost. Use it wisely."

I nodded, my mind racing with the implications. I knew that the dagger's power would come at a price, but I was willing to pay it.

We left the temple, the dagger in hand, ready to face whatever lay ahead.

As we emerged into the bright sunlight, I felt a sense of determination. We would stop the master, no matter what it took.
