Chapter 46 - Chapter 46

Back at the country side.

On the field, nine figure could be seen laying listless on the sound with their face covered in dirt. Their bones quivered as the darkness of the night had receded at the first light of dawn creping over the horizon. The nine trainees lay scattered across the field, their bodies weary from the grueling labor. The sound of a cow lowing in the distance, followed by the rumble of a tractor, pierced the stillness, jolting them awake.

As they stirred, groans and complaints filled the air. Their faces were smeared with dirt, sweat, and exhaustion etched on every feature. The allocated 324 square meters of land lay transformed before them, tilled and planted with precision, a testament to their laborious efforts throughout the night.

Ryan slowly sat up, his back aching from the hours of bending and digging. He rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the fatigue. Reina, beside him, stretched her arms, her shoulders creaking in protest. "How did we even finish this much?" she whispered, her voice hoarse from thirst.

Claire stumbled to her feet, her legs trembling beneath her. "I think I'm going to collapse," she muttered, her eyes scanning the cleared land. "Is it really worth it?" she asked, her tone laced with doubt.

Vincent and Oscar exchanged a look, both of them looking like they'd been through a war. "We did it," Vincent said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But at what cost?"

As they began to stir, Julius appeared on the horizon, a smile on his face. "Well done, trainees," he said, his eyes scanning the land. "You've cleared and planted the allocated area. Now, let's get you fed and hydrated."

The trainees groaned, their complaints growing louder as they stumbled towards Julius. "Is this really necessary?" Skara asked, his voice laced with frustration. "We're not farmhands."

Julius chuckled. "You're not just farmhands, you're agents in training. And this is part of your training. You'll learn to appreciate the value of hard work and adaptability."

As they trudged towards the promised meal, their bodies aching and their spirits low, it was clear that this training program would push them to their limits. But would they emerge stronger, or would the strain break them? Only time would tell.

The trainees trudged towards their dorms, their legs heavy with exhaustion. As they entered their respective rooms, they collapsed onto their beds, their bodies sinking into the mattresses like stones. The soft hum of the air conditioning and the gentle rustle of the curtains were the only sounds that broke the silence.

Ryan's eyes drooped shut, his chest rising and falling with a slow, rhythmic breath. Reina's arms sprawled out to her sides, her fingers twitching slightly before coming to rest. Claire's face was pressed into her pillow, her breathing growing more labored as she slipped into sleep.

The dorms were quiet, the only sound the soft snores and murmurs of the trainees as they succumbed to exhaustion. The darkness seemed to close in around them, a heavy blanket that threatened to suffocate them.

As the trainees slept, Crook and Julius stood in the training facility's office, engaged in a tense conversation. "I don't see why we're wasting time with manual labor," Crook said, his voice laced with frustration. "We should be focusing on teaching them how to use their superhuman abilities."

Julius leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing slightly. "The labor is part of their training, Crook. It's about adaptability and blending in."

Crook snorted. "You know, Julius, everything you say seems scripted. Like you're following a manual."

Julius's expression remained neutral, but a flicker of annoyance danced in his eyes. "I've been doing this for a long time, Crook. I know what works."

Crook raised an eyebrow. "Really? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're holding them back."

Julius leaned forward, his voice taking on a measured tone. "Listen, Crook. I understand your concerns, but trust me, this training structure is designed to push them to their limits. It's not just about their physical abilities, but about their mental toughness and adaptability."

Crook's gaze held Julius's for a moment before he nodded slowly. "Alright, I'll trust your judgment. But if I see even a hint of stagnation, I'll intervene."

Julius's expression softened slightly, a small concession to Crook's concerns. "I appreciate your input, Crook. Let's just focus on getting these trainees ready for their missions."

As Crook left the office, Julius leaned back in his chair, his mind wandering to the training structure. He knew Crook had valid points, but he couldn't shake the feeling that altering the structure now would undermine the entire program, he had been a mercenary who had captured many superhuman abilities users and knew very much if their shortcomings having been a the field longer than Crook. Some tweaks, perhaps, but a complete overhaul? No, he thought, the current approach will yield the desired results.

As Crook walked out of the office, his frown evident, Fray and Gwen, Julius's 11 and 12-year-old daughters, entered the room. Their silver eyes sparkled with mischief as they gazed at their father. Fray, the younger of the two, couldn't help but giggle at Crook's departing scowl.

"Daddy, what did Mr. Crook do to make him look like that?" Fray asked, her voice barely containing her amusement.

Julius smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Just a difference of opinion, girls. Nothing to worry about."

Gwen, the older sister, raised an eyebrow. "We saw him storming out. His heartbeat rhythm sounded funny. Like, really fast like hitting a table tennis ball."

Julius's expression turned thoughtful. "You girls are getting more perceptive by the day. Yes, Mr. Crook is a bit... passionate about his views even with him being...should I say inexperienced?."

Fray snickered. "Passionate? That's one way to put it and inexperienced is definitely what he is. He looked like he'd sucked on a lemon!"

Gwen chuckled, her eyes gleaming with mirth. "Yeah, and his face was all scrunched up like a prune!"

Julius chuckled, his laughter warm and deep. "Well, girls, I think we've had enough teasing for one day. How was your day?"

As they chatted, Fray and Gwen exchanged a look, their silver eyes sparkling with a hint of something more, something hidden. It was a look that suggested they knew secrets beyond their years, secrets that only they and perhaps their father understood.

The conversation continued, light and playful, but beneath the surface, a sense of suspense lingered, a sense that these two young girls were more than they seemed, and that their abilities, whatever they might be, were still waiting to be revealed.
