Lu Aotian and Mei Xing drove up to the grand gates of the Lu mansion, an imposing structure nestled amidst meticulously manicured gardens.
As they approached the entrance, Mrs Lu opened the door, her eyes widening in surprise to see her son accompanied by a woman– the one she had spoken badly of.
"Aotian, this is a pleasant surprise. You didn't tell me you were bringing someone over," Mrs Lu said. Despite the shock in her voice, she was still welcoming.
"Mum, this is Mei Xing," Lu Aotian introduced. "Mei, this is my mother."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs Lu," Mei Xing said, offering a polite bow. Unlike Mrs Lu, her tone was formal and neutral.
Mrs Lu smiled, though the atmosphere remained slightly awkward. "Welcome, Mei Xing. Please, come in."
After exchanging pleasantries in the grand foyer, they moved to the dining room for dinner. The table was set with an array of dishes, ranging from braised meats and fresh vegetables filling the air.
