Mrs. Morrison lived her whole life for herself. She was incredibly selfish, yet she never thought she was at fault. She probably believed that the whole world owed her, and she was the most pitiful victim.
But, in fact, she was the most despicable culprit.
Wasn't her husband the most innocent person in the entire situation? And the most pitiful, wasn't it the father-in-law who loved her wholeheartedly yet received not a bit of response?
Mrs. Morrison deserved to be abandoned by that ex-boyfriend, deserved to end up with both her husband and son dead. She brought this upon herself.
Matilda Jenkins felt sorry for her husband, and thought it unfair for his father-in-law. Why would someone choose such a woman? Such a person is not worth loving at all.
The more Matilda thought about it, the angrier she became. If she had known these things earlier, she would never have had any sympathy for Mrs. Morrison initially.
