"Why are you helping that Maxwell, you idiot?" an angry shout came from an old farmer, as he glared fiercely and questioned, as if Diana had committed a grave mistake.

"Talking about punishing evil and promoting justice, what a joke! You're just a fool! Are you crazy?" another middle-aged man sneered harshly, carrying firewood on his back and wearing patched clothes, clearly a hardworking individual.

"Disgusting! Just disgusting! Proudly calling yourself a righteous person. I bet you and that Maxwell, who devours others without leaving a trace, are on the same path! I was even admiring how beautiful she looked just now, never expected she was a snake in the grass!"

"Yeah, maybe she approached Maxwell because she saw he had money. Nowadays, money is everything. Disgusting!" The man spat out these words while holding the firewood, showing clear disdain.

The onlookers joined in, mocking and taunting Diana with their words. Their expressions genuinely reflected their disgust, unaffected by Diana's stunning beauty. For the poor, no matter how beautiful a face may be, it can't put food on the table or provide any benefits.

Diana felt confused. She didn't know what she had done wrong to receive such criticism. And she had a vague feeling that something was off about Maxwell, too.

Seeing Diana's confusion, Chris slowly approached in his car and stopped beside her. He got out of the car and handed a cigarette to the onlookers. "I'm sorry, did my wife do something wrong? She can be impulsive sometimes, doing good things with unintended consequences. I apologize on her behalf. But please, tell us what happened? Who is this Maxwell? I can see the anger in everyone's eyes, there must be something we don't know."

As Chris intervened to defuse the situation, Diana felt a flicker of tenderness in her heart. This man was kind, always ready to help her when she was lost and helpless. Having someone to rely on, someone who would stand up for her when she needed it, made her fearless even if the whole world turned against her. Thinking of this, she spoke up, her voice resolute, "Who is this Maxwell exactly? Please, tell me. If I've made a mistake, I will personally make amends!"

The atmosphere of mockery suddenly changed, and the faces of the surrounding residents shifted from scorn to calm. At that moment, an elderly man with a cane separated from the crowd and walked forward, commanding respect. He coughed as he walked but no one belittled him.

"I am the former mayor. Miss, I don't think you're a bad person. You must have been deceived by Maxwell. That scoundrel is no good. The bottle he gave you is likely filled with a drug. Many women in our town have been victimized in the same way, inhaling the gas from that bottle and then getting abducted by his henchmen. By the time they're found, those women are already dead, having suffered unimaginable torture."

"Maxwell is the only son of a wealthy tycoon in our town. The tycoon is a good person and often helps the residents. We are truly grateful to him and voluntarily do things for him to show our appreciation. He often pays us extra for our work, and he truly is a kind person!"

"The tycoon had his son late in life and named him Maxwell. But that Maxwell is a bad seed who has been up to no good since he was young! Perhaps because he's the tycoon's only son, we overlooked his misdeeds because of the tycoon's kindness. Sometimes he would peep on women while they were bathing, sometimes he would damage our crops. He did many things that infuriated us. The tycoon compensated us, but it was never enough."

"After the tycoon passed away, Maxwell started colluding with the local thugs and causing trouble everywhere. Recently, a family in town was forced to ruin because of him. He targeted the daughter and dragged that elderly John into gambling. He lost everything, even his daughter, who had to be sold to repay the debts. The poor girl couldn't bear the torment and ended up smashing her head against the wall and dying..."

"Ah, the world is going downhill, and our lives are so difficult. The man who wanted to kill Maxwell just now was a retired soldier. When he heard about these incidents, he wanted to seek justice. But, alas!" The old mayor didn't continue speaking, as the rest of the story could be inferred — Diana unexpectedly intervened, thinking she was upholding justice, but unknowingly aiding the evildoer...
