Esme – POV
I gasped as he swept me into his arms, cradling me in a bridal carry. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, but the heat inside me burned like a raging forest fire, spreading through every nerve. The palace maids paused in their work to watch us, their eyes widening in surprise—some even wearing amused smiles. Embarrassed, I buried my face against his chest, inhaling his scent. His arms tightened around me.
The door to his chambers swung open. He lowered me gently, and as my body sank into the soft mattress, his gaze lingered, raking over me. My wet blouse clung to my skin, and my high-waisted fitted pants outlined every curve. My heartbeat quickened.
"Esme."
The way he said my name sent another wave of heat rushing through me. He leaned over me, his fingers curling around the back of my neck, his thumb stroking its length. His touch felt like a spell I couldn't resist.
"Do you have any idea what you're asking for?" His deep voice only pulled me deeper into this haze.
