Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Strangeness of Yin and Yang

Han Yu didn't practice martial arts today; instead, he followed into the kitchen, feeling somewhat uneasy. His wife had been pampered from a young age. Although she grew up in the village, the Su Family was a large landlord family. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law treasured their only young child, taking great care of their daughter. It's said that before she was married, there was even a little servant girl specifically to attend to her, truly never dipping her fingers in anything, let alone doing any chores.

Although his wife's performance from the morning until now was decent, Han Yu didn't really want to doubt his wife. But can you really expect someone who's never been in the kitchen to cook for the whole family? Better to keep an eye on things, just in case she accidentally sets the kitchen on fire. Of course, Han Yu thought this way, but he didn't show it on his face and just secretly observed Su Wenyuan's reactions.

Seeing Su Wenyue standing there in a daze, Han Yu felt a sense of "I knew it." His wife had the heart but lacked the skill, and one couldn't blame her for that. If it weren't for the fact that the Su Family kept their promises and were not those who craved wealth and power, with Su Wenyue's beauty and background, she would surely marry into a very good family, becoming a young mistress with a retinue of maidservants. Why would she need to do these things? Her reaction yesterday was probably due to her inner anxiety, which caused her to say such things on purpose. Thinking this way, Han Yu found Su Wenyue's arrogance and disdain from yesterday somewhat endearing. It really was quite a beautiful misunderstanding.

However, Han Yu still felt somewhat uncomfortable inside and developed more sympathy and tenderness towards his wife. A man should make accomplishments in life. Eventually, he would achieve success, allowing his wife to live a good life and not regret marrying into the Han Family.

"Wife, what's the matter? If you can't do it, it's fine. There are so many people at home who can cook; you're not required to do it. It's the thought that counts," Han Yu said, thinking he was being considerate, but was met with a blank stare from Su Wenyue.

This man looked down on her like that. It's just a table of meals, and it's not as if it's a difficult task. Back then, to please that man, she made quite the effort on her cooking skills. Even the chef in the mansion felt inferior compared to her skills, otherwise, how could she have gained that man's favor? That man had been accustomed to gourmet delicacies since childhood, with quite picky tastes.

"Don't underestimate me. It's just cooking a meal; it's quite simple. I'm just not sure where everything is kept at home."

When Su Wenyue said this, Han Yu thought she was just being stubborn to save face. Han Yu secretly found his wife adorably obstinate, but still led Su Wenyue to familiarize herself with the kitchen. With him watching, there wouldn't be any major mistakes, perhaps just a bit off-taste.

When Su Wenyue skillfully prepared a fragrant breakfast, Han Yu realized his wife meant it all along. He truly underestimated her. Due to the limited conditions of the Han Family, the ingredients Su Wenyue could use weren't much, and she had to be conservative with the portions. Otherwise, if one breakfast used up several meals' worth of ingredients, no matter how delicious she made it, others might not think she did well. It's not easy being a farmhouse wife, but even so, Su Wenyue managed to make an ordinary breakfast smell delightful.

Han Yu thought about what a great time his wife had learned to cook. Could it be that before the marriage, the mother-in-law specifically taught her? It seemed to him that this might be the case, but he didn't know that before marrying, Mrs. Su indeed intended her daughter to learn the ways of being a wife and had taught Su Wenyue some cooking. However, Su Wenyue was naturally delicate, and marrying into a family like the Han Family, she didn't think it necessary to please them, much less take it to heart.

Han Yu was about to say something when he heard noises from outside. He looked through the kitchen door and saw Mrs. Han Yang approaching, quickly stepping out of the kitchen without being noticed by her.

Mrs. Yang didn't expect Su Wenyuan to be like a typical new daughter-in-law who gets up early to make breakfast. Arriving in the kitchen early in the morning, she didn't expect Su Wenyuan to have already prepared breakfast. She nodded in approval, a satisfied smile on her face. Any previous concern about Su Wenyuan being married into their family dissipated. Her daughter-in-law was truly a great choice; not only was she beautiful and sprightly, but she also adhered to the rules of a new bride and was so capable. Yuer was really fortunate.

"Mother, you're up," Su Wenyue called out sweetly as she saw Mrs. Yang enter, completely without the arrogance and disdain of her previous life.

"Yes, I was just coming to make breakfast, but you, Lady Yue, already prepared it. You're truly capable." Mrs. Yang replied warmly, looking even more favorably upon Su Wenyue.

Seeing Mrs. Yang's satisfied expression, Su Wenyue knew she had passed her mother-in-law's test and felt delighted, appearing even more modest: "It's what a wife should do."

"Good, good, you really are an understanding child. Our Yuer marrying you is truly a blessing. You've been in the kitchen alone for so long; you must be tired. Take a seat and rest. Let your sisters-in-law and me handle the rest. Don't wear yourself out."

Mrs. Yang said this, insistently pulling Su Wenyue to sit down, making the other daughters-in-law look on with jealousy. When they married in, they had to do the same and never heard a word of praise from their mother-in-law. Besides, what new daughter-in-law doesn't have to do this? But Su Wenyue was treated like something more precious. Her mother-in-law seemed to plan on treating her like a Bodhisattva, just because Su Wenyue had a good family background.

"Yes, Fourth Sister-in-law, just rest. Let us sisters-in-law handle the rest. After all, we're tough-skinned. You're unlike us, so delicate. Making breakfast makes Mother worry as if what?" Eldest sister-in-law, Mrs. Liu, said, sarcastically.

Mrs. Yang heard the eldest daughter-in-law's words, and her face turned a bit unpleasant. This eldest daughter-in-law was never good, lazy and cunning, and on top of that, not very capable, always stirring up trouble. Now she was targeting the newly arrived fourth daughter-in-law, who had been pampered and never faced such pettiness. No good would come out of this conflict.

Su Wenyue wasn't deaf to the sarcasm in Mrs. Liu's words, but she still smiled slightly, completely unbothered. In her previous life, Mrs. Liu was always like this, always targeting her. Back then, being young and spirited, she couldn't withstand Mrs. Liu's instigation and suffered quite a bit. In this life, she saw Mrs. Liu like a clown. She was too lazy to stoop to Mrs. Liu's level. Besides, it's her first day here, and causing a scene wouldn't be good, even if she came out ahead, she might end up with a reputation for being disrespectful to her elder sister-in-law. With this in mind, Su Wenyue smiled more gently.

"Big Sister-in-law, what are you saying? How could a younger sister-in-law like me let my sisters-in-law do all the work while sitting idle myself? Anyway, most of it is done, why don't Mother and my sisters-in-law sit down, and I'll bring the breakfast over."
