John awoke with a start, as he looks around he realizes that he's no longer in his own room. Where the hell am I and how did I get here, he thinks, trying to remember what he did last night. As he stops and recalls his last memories he realizes that he has no explanation for why he is not at home in bed. As he is about to get up and investigate his new surroundings a voice sounds in his head.

Wait what the hell is going on? John tries to process everything. Okay so it seems like I have somehow been taken from Earth and brought here wherever here is. I am also now a Player whatever that means.

As he gets out of the bed he notices that his movement is less coordinated than he is use to. Huh I wonder if it's because of this stupid armor. As he walks across the room to look out the window he almost trips over his own feet, luckily he catches himself before he goes through the window. Okay I know I'm not imagining it now what's going on here why am I having so much trouble with everyday things.

Are you kidding me I have to adjust everytime my stats change. As he looks out the window he sees a sprawling vista of desolation there are dead and scorched trees scattered across bare and cracked mudflats. A large red sun hangs in the hazey sky. I'm definitely not on earth anymore that's for sure. He searches his mind to understand where he is and why the world outside his window looks the was it does.
The information comes slowly as his mind is still processing all the new information. He is in the Baren Wastelands. Once upon a time this area was a vibrant farmland that produced the majority of grain for the country of Therndale. Now Therndale no longer exists it was destroyed a hundred years ago in a cataclysmic event that's origin still hasn't been determined.
Crap can I please get a break, the nearest settlement is a week away across treacherous terrain filled with many unknown creatures. He is currently in an abandoned guard post that was built shortly after the cataclysmic event that befell Therndale. Well I guess I should look around and see if there is anything I can use to make it to civilization. As he leaves the room to explore he fails to notice a shadow detaches itself from the wall and heads deeper into the wasteland.
After several hours of searching he acquired a pouch with 10 copper coins, a water pouch and several scrapes and bruises.
He knows that there should be wells at some of the other outposts built along the way so he's not to worried about water. His main concern is what he's going to do about food. He can theoretically go a week without food but he's almost certain that he can't do it while hiking and fighting off unknown creatures that might attack him along the way. But he also knows that he can't stay here or he is guaranteed to die.
