Chapter 177 - Chapter 173

The mirrored palace stretched upward into the golden-blue sky, its spires crystalline and still. Beneath that shining firmament, Yuichi stood once more in his inner world — a place of serene beauty and dangerous honesty.

The floor beneath him gleamed like an infinite lake of glass, and every breath of air carried the faint sound of chimes, as though the wind itself passed through hollow crystal. His reflection blinked up at him from every angle.

He stood beside Kagami no Jotei, the manifestation of his soul, her form regal and steady. Her pale violet hair trailed behind her in ribbons, and her mirrored mask gleamed under the distant sun.

"You will face three trials," she said, her voice ringing with quiet authority. "One for the man you were, one for the man you are, and one for the man you hope to become."

Yuichi folded his arms, gaze narrowing slightly. "What's the point of this?"

She turned toward him, slowly, and her voice softened.

"Sometimes, to see what lies ahead… we must take time to look behind."

Yuichi frowned. "I'm not stuck in the past. That person… I'm not him anymore."

"Then this will be simple," she said, gesturing for him to follow.

They walked in silence through the ripple-gates of the palace. The mirrored walls reflected not their appearances, but fragments of memory — training sessions, battles, quiet conversations with Mei, hidden moments of pain no one else ever saw. They passed a hall where blood bloomed across the reflection of his robes — a memory of their first mission in the human world.

Yuichi didn't speak. Neither did she.

Eventually, they arrived at the center of the palace: a circular chamber open to the endless mirrored sky. The floor shimmered softly under their feet.

Standing across the chamber was a figure Yuichi hadn't seen in a long time — but knew instantly.

It was himself.

The way he was the day he first arrived in Soul Society.

Younger. Lighter. Eyes uncertain. Shoulders stiff with tension and fear. The blade in his hand looked awkward — held with too much caution, too little confidence.

Yuichi stepped forward cautiously, gaze narrowing. "You brought me here to fight myself?"

"No," Kagami no Jotei said behind him. "I brought you here to face yourself."

The past Yuichi raised his sword, his jaw clenched as if preparing for battle despite being outmatched.

"You've grown," Jotei said, her voice gentle. "But part of you still fears your beginning. Still carries the shame of not being strong enough. Still compares who you are now to the shadow of who you once were."

Yuichi didn't move. He watched the past version settle into an unsteady stance.

"I thought I'd forgotten this version of me," he said quietly.

"Not forgotten," Jotei replied. "Merely buried."

The younger Yuichi charged without warning.

His footwork was flawed — weight too far forward, speed fueled by fear, not technique. Yuichi parried the first slash with ease, rotating his wrist and knocking the blade away.

A second strike came — wild and imprecise. Yuichi sidestepped, letting it pass harmlessly by.

His past self turned with a frustrated shout and lunged again.

Yuichi blocked. Countered. Shoved him back.

There was no thrill to the exchange. No real danger. Just… recognition. This version of him had once struggled to hold his blade steady during his first spar with Mei. He remembered the trembling hands after his first Hollow kill. The fear that he would die meaningless. The self-loathing for needing others to save him.

"You're so weak," he murmured aloud.

The past version paused — not physically, but spiritually — as though the thought echoed through him.

Kagami no Jotei stepped forward again, her voice unwavering.

"You were weak," she said. "And you were afraid. But weakness is not a flaw. It is the beginning."

Yuichi looked at her sideways, breathing steady.

"Mastering oneself," she said, "is not about forgetting fear. It's about owning it. Seeing it. Walking forward anyway."

The past Yuichi attacked again — more desperate now, as if resisting erasure. Yuichi blocked the flurry of strikes and knocked him back with the flat of his blade.

"I'm not you anymore," he said.

His past self charged once more — but Yuichi was faster now. He flowed past the attack and struck, blade aimed at the shoulder, not the heart. The blow sent the younger self tumbling, sword skidding across the glass floor.

The figure knelt, panting. And then… began to fade.

Piece by piece, he broke into shards of light — like a mirror falling in slow motion. The fragments rose into the air, glowing faintly, and vanished into the sky.

Yuichi exhaled slowly and lowered his blade.

Kagami no Jotei said nothing at first. Then, with a gentle wave of her hand, a ripple of energy flowed over him. Minor cuts and scrapes sealed, and a light warmth surged through his core.

"That part of you," she said, "is not gone. It is simply… acknowledged."

He looked up at her, uncertain. "What now?"

"Now," she said, "you meet who you are."

A pulse echoed through the chamber — and a new ripple spread across the air.

From one of the mirrored corridors stepped another figure. Same height. Same face. Same eyes.

Same weight in the blade.

Yuichi felt it instantly — the strength of its reiryoku was identical to his own.

Across from him stood a version of himself as he was now — same strength, same instincts, same pain.

The other Yuichi raised his blade in silence.

Yuichi mirrored the motion.

"This will be different," Kagami no Jotei said. "To surpass yourself, you must first survive your current self."

Yuichi breathed in.

The sound of wind-chimes returned to the air — this time harsher, more like steel struck against steel.

And the fight began.
