Chapter 138
The steady beep of Maria's monitor was the best sound in the world. Color was coming back to her cheeks. I let out a long breath I didn't know I'd been holding. My shoulders, tight with worry, finally started to relax. I was so relieved that Maria was doing better.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I knew who it was before I looked.
"Alayna?" My mother's voice was bright and full of purpose, a world away from the quiet beeps of the hospital. "Don't forget, the head seamstress is waiting. We have to make wedding gown today. You need to be here in an hour."
I closed my eyes for a second. The wedding. Right. It was only a month away. The world of silk and lace and endless guest lists suddenly felt heavy.
"I remember, Mother," I said, my voice sounding tired. "I'll be there."
"Good. Don't be late. This is important."
