The year was 1989. In the town of Sunshine Valley, some people were enjoying a cool Friday afternoon with some of the students still in school, while others were enjoying the peaceful parks, having a picnic, and others were trying to catch the biggest fish the town had ever seen.
The town was lively with many lovely families enjoying the peaceful atmosphere compared to the city of Des Moines in Iowa. Some would live their lives as farmers, while some would raise their children who were understanding what life feels like in the rural area and to learn as much as they could in school.
However, things would be more than fun and exciting for the students of High School and Elementary school, seeing that the school year was almost over.
In a home in Sunshine Valley, there seemed to be a teenager under the sheets of the bed. He was snoring very loudly with a comic book on his head, being the cherry on top.
Suddenly, his alarm clock started ringing at 7 AM.
The teen rose from his bed, uncovering himself and the comic book falling off his head.
"Today's the day!" Tyler woke up on his full-size bed.
Tyler Thompson, an average student with a GPA of 3.8 and his future school at Yale University in the big city of New York, woke up with a smile, seeing the bright future that would be brought upon him during the upcoming school year and being the future class of 1993.
Tyler would head towards the bathroom, showering, brushing his teeth, and combing his dark brown hair, trying to impress his future prom date along with the varsity cheerleading team.
"Sweet." Tyler ran towards his room, changing into his clothes.
Coming down the stairs, Tyler saw his mom, enjoying a cigarette in the kitchen while reading the news about the prediction of the future collapse of the Soviet Union, while having good old bacon and eggs ready for her only son.
"Heading to school? It's barely 8 AM, and you're already heading out?" Mrs. Thompson looked at her son.
"Of course. Today is the last day of school for us before Prom! I always wanted to live my dream of going on a date and dancing with a beautiful woman. I'm just getting a head start today, so I can finish my final report before it's due by midnight and maybe get the opportunity to head to our local tailor to get the best suit for the dance!"
"Alrighty kid, but please be safe out there, Tyler." Mrs. Thompson hugged her son.
"I will, Mom." Tyler ran out of the house.
"Love you."
"Love you too, Mom!"
On the sidewalk, Tyler took out his cassette player from his bag and started playing some songs from the good decade before the world headed to the 90s. Tyler would see others head to school while seeing others moving their lawn early in the morning or watering their flowers.
"What a great town." Tyler looked around him.
Passing by the bakery, Tyler would see the baker of Bellum's Bakery.
"Well, good morning, Tyler!" Mrs. Bellum opened up her doors.
"Morning, Mrs. Bellum! How are you on this fine morning?"
"Great! It's another great day that God blessed upon us! Plus, I spent all morning making these creamy eclairs. A new pastry I'm considering selling in my bakery! Want to help me have a taste test?"
"Sure." Tyler walked into the bakery, where a fresh batch of eclairs was waiting in the kitchen.
"Go on! Grab one!" Mrs. Bellum gave him a parchment paper.
Grabbing one, Tyler took a bite, and he got some sweet cream on his mouth.
"So?"
[Mrs. Bellum]
"It's amazing! This should form a big line outside your restaurant! I mean, I don't know how you made the cream, but it feels like I'm eating a Boston cream donut, but even better!" Tyler finished eating the eclair.
"Thank you so much, Tyler! By the way, why are you up so early?"
"Heading to school! Can't be late! By the way, can I get a few more for my friend?"
"Of course! Take as many as you want! It's in the house!" Mrs. Bellum gave Tyler a plastic bag.
"Thanks a lot!" Tyler grabbed a bag of eclairs and ran out of the bakery.
"No problem! I can't wait for you to graduate high school!" Mrs. Bellum waved bye to Tyler.
"Awesome, free breakfast on the last day of school! Best day ever!" Tyler approached Sunshine High.
Tyler would see that most of the students were also thinking the same way, with them being early to school.
"I guess I ain't the only one thinking about Prom too!" Tyler walked on the premises of Sunshine High.
Walking in, the crowd was very packed, with most students already wanting to finish the end of the school year.
It was the day before prom, and many of the seniors at Sunshine High were getting excited to finish their high school careers. Besides the seniors, the other students were so ready to finish their finals and head to summer break, as the summer of 1989 would be one of the best summers to date.
Discussions spread everywhere about prom night and their graduation day, with some discussing what to wear for prom, while others discussed their excitement for graduation day.
"Oh man, this school is packed! Although we are a small town, it seems so joyful and peaceful!"
"Oh hey Tyler!" Tyler's teacher waved at him.
"Hey Mr. Fujikawa! Isn't this a great morning?"
"It certainly is! I hope for your success once you get your High School Diploma and graduate!"
"Well, Mr. Fujikawa! I'm very thankful to you for teaching me Calculus; I wouldn't be majoring in Biomedical Engineering without your teachings!"
"No problem, kiddo!"
Tyler passed Mr. Fujikawa and headed to his locker.
Walking past some students, he passed by some of his peers.
"Yo Tyler, ready for the prom?!" A peer of Tyler said.
"Yeah! You better wear your fine China out there!"
"You too!"
Tyler passed by his peers, closely approaching his locker.
"I hope he likes these kinds of pastries."
"OOHHH FREE BREAKFAST!" A teenager, who was at least six feet tall, pushed Tyler and grabbed his bag full of eclairs.
"What is this?" A teenager looked at the pastry and ate the whole pastry in one bite.
"Yummy!" he said, eating the whole bag of eclairs.
"What the hell, Jack Stone? Those were for my friend." Tyler stood up.
"I don't care. I'm hungry. Besides, I'm the only one in this school who got accepted to Harvard. You are just a retard, and I don't like disabled retards!"
"Dude, I also got into an Ivy League school. I worked hard for my spot. You were carried by a lot of letters of recommendation! You didn't even study. Your stupid baseball varsity team or whatever you have saved your ass!"
"So!"
"So, instead of you showing your university to us, you should try to be nicer to people you know."
"Pfff. Whatever. Like I care." Jack threw the brown bag at Tyler's head as he walked away.
"People like you shouldn't be able to go to Harvard," Tyler whispered to himself, walking towards his locker.
Approaching his locker, he unlocked the door and lock, and all of a sudden, a ton of his junk started to come out of his locker.
"Oh boy, my locker is so much like a junkyard." Tyler sees a lot of stuff falling to the floor from the locker.
"I guess I'll come back to school after prom." Tyler is closing the door.
"Tyler!" Raymond Robinson, Tyler's best friend, called his name.
"Hey, Ray! What's up?"
"Nothing much. I just got my new suit this morning! It took me three months to get that suit. I mean, nobody can compete with Chinese silk, ya know."
"Wow, you spent that much to get a suit you'll be using for one day?"
"Well, yeah. My Dad is Gary Robinson, the mayor of Sunshine Valley. He wants me to enjoy prom as much as I can."
"Well, lucky you. I'm just using one of my Dad's business suits since we don't have the money to afford a new one."
"I'm sorry to hear that. Hey, maybe I can lend you some money from my Dad. I can vouch for you since you're my best friend."
"Sure, that'll be nice. Does the cologne count?"
"Indeed." Tyler and Raymond both started walking in the hallway.
"Hey, do you sometimes worry about that kid?" Tyler asked Raymond.
"What kid?"
"I mean, John. A couple of weeks ago, he had a mental breakdown and just ran out of the school crying."
"Oh, that kid. I mean, what do you expect? He's disabled. He can't help it. With that deformity, only a mother would love that hideous face."
"Ray, I don't think you should be saying that?"
"Why? I'm being honest. People with disabilities are just born unlucky."
"Maybe you're missing the point. They're humans like us. I just can't believe that we can make a bill that prevents segregation based on race, but not on disabilities. So, Ray, until we get to see that day, I suggest you treat the disabled like everyone else. I mean, would you like it if people made fun of you because you're black?"
"No. You're right, Tyler. I guess I was wrong to say that. Maybe in the future…"
Raymond was interrupted by gunshots as he and Tyler both saw many students running.
"What the hell was that?" Raymond was disturbed by the sound.
"Those are gunshots. We have to get out of here." Tyler took Raymond's hand as they tried to escape the school.
Running in the hallway, however, Tyler and Raymond seemed to approach something horrifying.
[It was the shooter]
The shooter seemed to have blonde hair with a ton of blood on his face. He was wearing nothing but a plain white shirt, blue jeans, and red sneakers as he mowed down the students in his sight. But it wasn't a face that Tyler and Raymond recognized.
They were both terrified of the person killing every student in his path with a machine gun that seemed to be Soviet Union-made.
However, they decided to do what's right for their peers and for the school, and they would do their best to stop the shooter.
[Even if it cost their lives]
"Crap. Tyler, I have an idea." Raymond took the fire extinguisher from the wall.
"I'm going to spray this extinguisher on him. That way, we can wrestle him down and confiscate his gun."
"Are you sure, Raymond? What if we fail?"
"If so, then we died trying."
When the shooter was reloading his machine gun with another magazine, Tyler sprayed the fire extinguisher, making the shooter drop the magazine.
"Tyler, now!"
Tyler then wrestled the shooter to the ground, with Raymond following up, pushing his machine gun to the side.
"Who are you?! Why are you doing this?!" Tyler was screaming at the shooter.
However, the shooter was able to push off Tyler and Raymond with ease.
"FUCK OFF!" The shooter grabbed Raymond's leg and threw him across the long hallway to the point where it killed him, shattering his bones and destroying all his internal organs.
"Oh, my God. Raymond!" Tyler sees his best friend die.
"You bastard!" Tyler picks up the fire extinguisher and bashes the shooter's head.
However, the only thing that was affected was the fire extinguisher, which was more bruised than the shooter, seeing that the shooter was healing those bruise marks very quickly.
"What the?" Tyler dropped the overbruised fire extinguisher.
"Wrong choice." The shooter ran at Tyler, breaking both his legs with a single kick.
Tyler was in pain and agony with the difficulty of standing up again.
"You want to know who I am?" The shooter then picked up a handgun from his holster.
"I knew you tried your best to be nice to me because of my deformity. However, this world is shit, and I think you are responsible for that. Tyler Thompson." The shooter stuck his gun to Tyler's forehead.
[John?]
John killed Tyler with a single bullet, leaving many people dead around him. John walked over his body as if he never cared for anyone around him.
The hallways were covered in blood, dead students, bullet holes, and the fire alarm making noises as it seemed that a deceased student accidentally pulled it.
The year 1989 in Sunshine Valley marked the darkest day in its history, known as the cleansing of 1989.
