A Girl Called Light
The week began with sunlight spilling through the kitchen window, warm and soft, as Henessa sat at the table, her pencil scratching across a piece of paper. Her tongue stuck slightly out in concentration. Tiania watched her from the counter while flipping pancakes, a small smile curving her lips.
“What are you drawing this time?” Tiania asked.
Henessa didn’t look up. “My new friend.”
Tiania turned, curious. “New friend? That’s good news, sweetie. What’s her name?”
Henessa paused, then looked up, her eyes glowing with that pure, earnest light only a child could hold. “Her name’s Luma. She doesn’t talk, but she smiles a lot.”
Tiania set down the spatula, instantly intrigued. “She doesn’t talk?”
Henessa shook her head. “Nope. But I know what she’s saying. I just… feel it.” She tapped her chest with a tiny hand. “Here.”
