CHAPTER START---
Master Makarov, Laxus, Macao, and Wakaba watch Oberon wander off into the forests of Tenroujima Island without a care in the world. He strolls through the landscape with haste, but not too quickly to miss the sights. The wondrous magical plants and animals all around him, along with the layout of this strange island.
"Is this really the last part of the trial?" Macao asks while Laxus is still treating him.
"Always," Master Makarov says. "Normally I'd give a hint or something, but…it won't really matter this time. It's usually more of a placebo anyway."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Wakaba asks.
Makarov turns to them and smiles. "If I told you that it could give you a unfair advantage in the future. That's also why Laxus will stay here while I go wait at the grave. Can't have you knowing where it is before your own trial in a few years."
Laxus nods. "I'll stay here and take care of everyone. I bet Gildarts is going to overdo it anyway."
"That knucklehead. Alright Laxus, I leave them all to you for a while," Master Makarov says before flying into the forest.
Watching the man disappear beyond the treeline, Wakaba sits beside his friend and puffs on his pipe. "Hey, Laxus, you plan on becoming S-Class?"
Laxus doesn't look away from treating Macao's wounds. "How else would I be respected as Guildmaster?"
"I guess you're right. But, I have been thinking—"
Macao cuts off his friend. "About having to fight whatever the hell requires strength like Oberon and Gildarts to be brought down?"
Wakaba nods. "Ever since the last trial I've been thinking. You know, my life is pretty good as is. Why bother throwing it away for some more cash and fame?"
Macao takes out a small bottle of special spice rum, hoping he would have used it to celebrate his promotion, and cracks the seal.
"Ugh," Laxus groans as the scents bombard his draconic senses.
"I've been having the same thought, and you know what," Macao takes a sip of his drink before offering it to Wakaba. "I'm perfectly fine right where I am."
Wakaba takes a drink of his special rum. "I mean, there are S-Class Jobs that don't require fighting. But those are rare as is, and we aren't the breaking curses type. So, it's best we hold down the fort while Gildarts and Oberon are doing the big Jobs."
Laxus laughs as the men settle into a peaceful silence. "Yeah, you would have died anyway, so this is better."
They both cast curious glances at him.
"To be S-Class you have to be insane. That's what grandpa says at least. You guys are kind of…ordinary. Gildarts is freakishly strong, and Oberon is worse. And speaking as future Guildmaster, I wouldn't promote you as you are now. Because I'd rather you be alive as regular Wizards, than remembered as short lived S-Class Wizards…"
While they consider their futures, Oberon moves through the forest as if he were already familiar with the island. Crossing paths with what would be dangerous Magic Beasts, but much to his surprise they only spared him a second glance before moving along.
Oberon doesn't understand it, but is glad he doesn't have to hurt anything on the island while searching for the grave. He makes his way through the massive forests, and mere minutes after leaving Master Makarov and the others, he hears it.
Playful giggling from nearby, the joyful chime-like laughter of a young girl echoing from beyond the trees.
He turns on his heal and rushes toward the sound, the only thought in his mind that if this were an intruder, he'd need to use the signal flare, and if it were some person castaway at sea and washed up on the island, they'd need his help.
He pushes past a set of bushes, entering a part of the forest where the trees are spread out to make large clear spaces between them, while ascending taller to make the canopy taller than Kardia Cathedral in Magnolia.
Then, he hears the laughter again.
He turns and sees the ends of blonde hair disappear behind a tree, and Oberon rockets forward to the tree it disappeared behind, finding nothing but a single strand of hair.
"Hello?" he calls out while holding the strand, oblivious to how his emotions are being played thanks to their connection. Had it not been for this, he would have simply used Gravity Magic to capture his target.
But now, he was caught up in a children's game, constantly rushing toward the laughter and finding single strands of hair behind trees, bushes, rocks, and eventually entering another cave system.
Within a minute, Oberon was deep within this new cave system where the giggling grew louder, and upon turning the final corner, he sees it.
A large square shrine with a rectangular tombstone, split in two with a circular portion cut out of the middle. Had it been anyone else, they would have felt the soft and peaceful warmth flowing from it as the lingering Magic Energy permeates the area.
But to Oberon, who could not sense Magic, he was stunned by the fact that he'd found it. The grave of Fairy Tail's first Guildmaster, Mavis Vermillion.
Oberon is startled out of his stupor by giggling beside him, jolting away and turning to see a young child with long blonde hair down to her ankles wearing a long pink dress ending at her ankles, showing off her bare feet.
His eyes widen in realization, instantly recognizing her from the books in Fairy Tail's library.
"First Master?" he asks, and she smiles at him. "Are you a ghost?"
"Not exactly," her high-pitched voice was one step from laughing at him, but she retains her composure. "You don't seem so surprised to see me, why?"
"It would make sense for you to have a projection on the island. I assumed you were still controlling the Tenroujima Barrier. It would be to complex to create a spell like that without constant human input. You created the three ultimate Fairy Magics, unmatched spells even to this day.
And you were a master of illusion, projection, light, and light construct Magics, along with others. I was just hoping to study whatever formula you used to create the array for the island. I didn't expect a fragmented copy of your mind to be controlling it…but the absurd Ethernano here would be enough to fuel that."
Mavis's lip quivers as she frowns at him, stomping her feet. "You're not supposed to figure it out yourself! You're supposed to let me explain it and amaze you!" she says, playing along with his assumptions.
"Sorry sorry," Oberon steps back, unsure how to console her. "But at least you've got someone pretty smart in Fairy Tail, right?"
She pouts and looks away. "Whatever, I guess I'll forgive you. But you'd better not disappoint as a S-Class. You were led here because you have my personal blessing. That means you need to protect Fairy Tail even more."
"Is that why you made me S-Class? Because I'm really strong to protect Fairy Tail?"
She shakes her head. "Nope. I just think your name is cute. I died in my twenties, but, if I lived…I definitely would have named my son 'Oberon', so its like you've come home."
Oberon isn't sure how to feel about that, but he smiles and accepts it. "I'll do my best to make you proud, First Master."
"You can just call me Mavis. You will come back to visit, right? It gets so boring on this island with no company."
"Yeah. Herbal Hot Springs, lots of awesome plants and animals, and lots of Ethernano to refill my Magic Container even faster. It's a perfect place to practice new Magics."
Mavis giggles, happy to hear she'll have some to regularly talk to.
"What in the world!" Master Makarov's jaw drops as he rounds the corner to see them talking. "You brought him here already?!"
Mavis frowns and looks down at her feet. "Sorry, I just really wanted to talk to him. But I promise I'll make the other do more before finding my grave!"
Makarov facepalms, not surprised at all by this. "It doesn't matter, he would have passed any trial short of fighting Gildarts."
"Plus he's already hurt. I couldn't knowingly lead a hurt child into danger."
Master Makarov nods, and turns to Oberon. "Well, I don't think anyone in the guild is surprised at this. Congratulations, Oberon Alkwan, you are now a S-Class Wizard of the Fairy Tail Wizard Guild."
Oberon smiles, imagining all the possibilities and Magics he was now allowed to learn, looking expectantly between both Guildmasters.
"What now?" he asks.
"Now we head back to Magnolia and party!" Makarov says. "After that we can get to teaching you some more Magics."
"Finally!" Oberon hovers above the ground, amusing Mavis to no end. "I'll be back as soon as I'm healed up, Mavis. This place is perfect for training and I have some keys I want to try out!"
"Don't keep me waiting too long. Now, could you please give me a moment with Makarov."
"Oh, sure thing!" Oberon soars out of the cave, waiting at the entrance.
Makarov grumbles, turning to Mavis. "There, are you happy now?"
She glares at him. "You should have promoted him a year ago, or lifted at stupid rule to prevent him from learning other Magics. He'd be halfway to learning one of my Fairy Magics by now."
"He's not ready for that. You're lucky I didn't wait until he was 15 to enter the trials like everyone else."
"He's not like everyone else, he's Oberon."
"You keep saying that, but you still haven't explain it to me yet. What got you so interested in him from the moment the Guildmark connected him to you?"
Mavis sighs, turning away from Makarov, staring at her own grave. "He reminds me of Zeref. Before he lost faith in goodness and humanity. Back when he was just my genius Mage friend. Oberon is just like him, so much potential for good. So I figured, maybe this time I could keep him on the side of light."
"You know Zeref was never as good to the world as he was to you. He's known as Zeref The Dark Mage for a reason, his creations have killed millions by now."
Mavis wipes a tear from her cheek. "Yes, but that is all the more reason for us to keep Oberon close…"
