The group followed the ice cream van for nearly half an hour, keeping enough distance between their vehicles and the strange truck to avoid attracting the driver's attention.
At first, nothing particularly unusual happened.
The van travelled along the coastal roads of Baylean Bay, occasionally slowing down when it passed a residential area before stopping near a small group of houses.
Whenever its familiar tune played through the speakers, children came running out of their homes, some carrying pocket money while others begged their parents to let them buy a treat.
The driver greeted every child with the same cheerful smile, opened the side of the van, and handed out ice creams as though he were an ordinary vendor enjoying another day's work.
Cole watched the first stop with growing unease, especially when he noticed that the children seemed unusually excited to see the man.
They crowded around the van, laughing and calling out their favourite flavours, while the driver patiently served each of them.
Nothing about the scene appeared threatening to anyone who happened to pass by, and if Cole hadn't witnessed the truck's disturbing appearance earlier, he might have dismissed his suspicions as a trick of his supernatural sight.
However, when the van moved on and stopped near a small park where several children were playing, he finally understood why the two Quileute tribesmen had insisted that something was wrong.
This time, everyone could see it.
The moment the van came to a stop, Jenny felt an unpleasant sensation crawl across the back of her neck.
The brightly painted vehicle that had appeared ordinary from a distance now looked faded and rotten, with patches of rust spreading across its metal body and streaks of something dark running beneath the windows.
The cheerful music continued playing, but it sounded distorted, as though the tune were coming from a broken speaker buried inside an abandoned vehicle.
Kang's expression hardened when he noticed the driver's face, while Alex instinctively moved closer to his father.
"What the hell is that thing?"
Kang muttered, unable to take his eyes off the van.
Jenny didn't answer immediately.
Her attention had shifted to the children gathering around the open serving window, and the sight before her made her stomach turn.
Because of the supernatural contract they had received through Jojo, they could perceive things that ordinary people couldn't, including the true nature of certain supernatural disguises and the corruption hidden beneath seemingly harmless appearances.
Whatever illusion the driver had placed over the ice cream, it was no longer concealing anything from them.
The children were eating something revolting.
What looked like colourful ice cream to the ordinary eye appeared to Jenny as a thick, greyish substance filled with wriggling fragments, its surface glistening unpleasantly beneath the afternoon sunlight.
Some portions seemed to move even after the children had taken them into their mouths, while thin, dark veins pulsed through the mixture like living things.
It was difficult to tell whether the substance was biological matter, some form of supernatural parasite, or something that had no proper place in the natural world.
Whatever it was, the children devoured it happily, licking their spoons and asking the driver for more while wearing expressions of complete delight.
Jenny felt her stomach twist.
"Please tell me I'm not the only one seeing that,"
she said quietly, her eyes fixed on a little boy who was happily licking the remains from his fingers.
"You're not,"
Rosalie's absence would have been comforting, but Kang's voice came from beside her, tight with disgust.
"That stuff is moving."
Alex stared through the windshield, his face paling as a little girl took another spoonful and smiled up at the driver.
"Why are they eating it? Can't they see what it is?"
"They probably can't,"
Cole replied, sounding more disturbed than he had earlier.
"The first time I saw the van, it looked rotten to me, but everyone else saw an ordinary ice cream truck. Now we can all see through whatever it's doing."
One of the Quileute tribesmen leaned forward in his seat, his nose wrinkling as the foul smell reached them again, much stronger than before.
"That smell is coming from the food too. Whatever the driver is giving those children, it's the source of the stench we noticed on the road."
His companion watched the driver carefully.
"Then we need to stop him before he leaves."
"Not yet,"
Jenny said, although every instinct she possessed was urging her to get out of the vehicle and pull the children away from the van.
She forced herself to watch for another moment, trying to understand whether the driver was merely feeding the children something unnatural or deliberately infecting them with it.
Rushing in without knowing what the substance could do might put the children in even greater danger, especially if it spread through contact.
As if sensing that someone was watching him, the driver slowly raised his head.
His gaze travelled across the park before settling directly on their vehicles.
Then he smiled.
It was the same horrible smile Cole had seen earlier, except now Jenny could clearly make out the expression beneath the man's disguise.
His lips stretched far wider than they should have, and his eyes carried a disturbing awareness that made it obvious he knew they could see through his illusion.
He didn't look surprised or frightened. Instead, he seemed pleased that they had finally discovered what he was doing.
The driver turned back toward the children and handed another ice cream to a little girl who couldn't have been older than six.
She accepted it with a delighted giggle, completely unaware of the danger standing on the other side of the serving window.
Kang's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
"Jenny, we're running out of time. He's feeding this stuff to children, and we don't even know what it does to them."
"I know."
Jenny reached for her phone, keeping her eyes on the van as she prepared to contact Jojo.
"But we're not going to charge in blindly. We need to get those children away from him, and we need to find out what we're dealing with before this thing disappears."
Outside, the driver continued serving ice cream, his cheerful music filling the park while the children happily consumed the disgusting substance.
To their parents and everyone else nearby, it was an ordinary afternoon treat from a friendly vendor.
To Jenny and the others, it was becoming increasingly clear that something monstrous was hiding behind the familiar tune.
And judging by the way the driver kept glancing toward them, he had already noticed that his newest customers weren't the only ones watching him anymore.
