Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Alright correct me if I am wrong, my VIT stat represents my health regeneration and my WIS represents my magic regeneration, both measured by the minute?

[Correct.]

So then my health and magic are also these stats multiplied by 10? Is there a way I can increase the rate of regeneration?

[Yes and yes, different skills can change regen values.]

Thank you for clarifying.

While getting ready this morning, I was questioning the Game System about specific mechanics about my stats. Yesterday was a wake up call for me in that I needed to get a lot stronger if I wanted to protect myself from someone hostile.

As I arrived in the common room I started heading towards the library door, as I was curious to see some of it before going for breakfast. I paused as I heard someone calling out my name, waving me to head over. A sandy haired boy who I remembered as Kevin Entwhistle was standing with a nervous looking Terry Boot.

Kevin seemed to be moderately smarter than Terry, with higher CHA and LCK as well. Was it just a standard difference between people or was there something special about Kevin to have a higher LCK stat?

"Hey Harry we were about to head to the Great Hall for breakfast, care to join us?" Kevin eagerly asked.

"Sure, I don't mind." I responded with a smile.

Terry seemed to perk up after that, and soon the three of us left together. On our way there, I observed different things around the castle, and found myself surprised by some of what I learned. A suit of armor showed very unexpected results.

[[Defender of Hogwarts]

LV - 70]

Did that mean the suits of armor were alive? Using Observe on another suit of armor near the Great Hall showed the exact same results, suggesting that all of the suits of armor around the castle were the same. Perhaps they were emergency defenses in case the castle was attacked? Pushing the mystery of the suits of armor out of my mind for now, the three of us entered the Great Hall and sat down at the end of the Ravenclaw table.

After spending some time eating and listening to my housemates excitedly chatter about the upcoming year, Professor Flitwick came to the table and delivered all of our schedules. It seems I have Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Transfiguration today. Of the three, Herbology is the only one I am not invested in, though I can't say for certain how useful it will be in the future.

I decide to leave early to ensure I can get to class on time as it is important to set a good first impression with my teachers, they'll be grading me for the seven years after all. As I get up to leave I notice both Kevin and Terry are still eating, and as such I exit the hall without them. Just as I turn the first corridor, I hear footsteps quickly approaching from behind me, and I immediately turn to face the perpetrator.

"Hi Harry, are you heading to Herbology already?" Lisa struggles to ask between gasping for breaths.

"Yes, I decided to get an early start to all my classes just in case I can't find them the first time." I responded.

"Do you mind if I join you? I'm not sure where the classes are myself and I figured we could maybe go together and maybe be friends?" She asks excitedly.

I pause for a second at how direct she is, but then soon respond "Of course, I'd be happy for you to join me, shall we head off?"

The walk there is rather pleasant, it turns out Lisa is great company. She hasn't treated me too strangely and has been looking at me normally, rather than with the slight awe most of the students and teachers seem to be doing. Observing her yields some mildly interesting results, though nothing too out of the ordinary.

Of course her Charisma would be particularly high, given how easy it is to speak with her and her immediately jumping to asking to be friends with me. What's more surprising is her Wisdom and from that her Magic Points, she has more than both Kevin and Terry, being above the standard for our year in Ravenclaw at least.

After a few more minutes of walking, we eventually find ourselves at the greenhouses at the side of Hogwarts. Professor Sprout welcomes us and tells us to take a seat on one of the small stools overlooking a line of plants. As we wait for our classmates, Lisa and I fall into conversation.

As the class is filled with Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, Professor Sprout begins her lesson. What follows is an interesting description on the subject. Magical plants can be very dangerous but also useful, they are very important to consider in other fields of study but we won't be getting to those uses in our first year. It seems like Herbology will be important as sort of a supplementary course to understanding other topics, but I don't see myself being that interested in it. Lisa and I head towards Defense against the Dark Arts, this time joined by the rest of our housemates.

We chat about expectations for the next class and everyone seems to be very excited for it. People begin to theorize on what sort of spells we'll learn and how cool it will be, and I'm drawn in as well on the speculation.

When we arrive at the classroom all of us Ravenclaws are extremely excited to get on with the lesson. We file in and sit amongst the Slytherins who are already there. I find a seat in the front row between Sue and Lisa, and just as I get settled in the door opens and our Professor walks in. She is of average height with blonde hair up to her shoulders. With a warm smile on her face she greets the class and introduces herself.

"Hello everyone, I am Professor Rosemary and together we will be taking a journey through Defense Against the Dark Arts. The first thing to know about this subject is that we won't just be covering how to combat the Dark Arts, we will cover how to defend yourself in any hostile scenario."

This is what I had been waiting for as soon as I learned about magic! Professor Rosemary continued the lesson and went over what we would be learning this year and what would be expected of us. At the end of the lesson it seemed like she focused on me and gave me a look I couldn't decipher. I myself was curious about her and made sure to use Observe on the way out.

["Julia Rosemary"

Wow she's even stronger than Flitwick, I mean it makes sense given that she's what her subject is but I thought that Flitwick would be the strongest person in the school other than Dumbledore. It is a bit strange that there are quotation marks on her name, I'm assuming she's under an alias and I wonder why. Still, if she was able to be hired by the headmaster and the other teachers haven't done anything then I doubt that there's anything to worry about. It'll be exciting to learn more from her, I think this past class confirmed that DADA would be my favorite subject.

_______________

Transfiguration wasn't until the afternoon and it was time for lunch now so everyone headed towards the Great Hall together. I mostly talked to Sue and Lisa and once we finished we decided to explore the castle together. We wandered through different floors and I did my best to remember our path but I've heard that the castle changes its layout periodically so it might have been pointless. We did find some interesting rooms and decorations that we will revisit in the future, so long as we can find them again.

Eventually we started making our way towards the transfiguration classroom. Class was coming up and none of us wanted to be late so we made our way towards the room in question. Once we arrived and were settled in, I noticed a silver tabby cat sitting at the front of the classroom. On a whim I decided to use Observe on it, and was very surprised by the results.

[Minerva Mcgonagall

[Transfiguration Professor]

LV - 139]

Somehow our professor is that cat and I really don't know how. If this is what transfiguration is then it might be a lot more versatile than I expected.

Eventually the rest of our housemates and the Gryffindors trickle in and our professor surprises everyone by turning back into a human. She began lecturing us on the important rules of transfiguration, and repeatedly emphasized laws that we had to consider and procedures we must always follow. Eventually it was time for the end of class and everyone was tired of her insistence on the rules and what to know before even attempting transfiguration. Perhaps sensing our growing annoyance, she ended the class by shocking us all again.

Waving her wand in quick and fluid movements, she turned her desk into a lion and one of the nearby chairs into a shining sword.

McGonagall then said in a satisfied voice, "I know there is a lot for you to remember, but if you follow the rules you will one day be able to do this as well."

With that last showcase once again making everyone excited and the rest of the day in front of us, everyone left class in high spirits.

The others decided to head back to the common room together but I chose to go to the Hogwarts library and see what it was like. Upon arriving I looked towards the librarian who had a stern look on her face and immediately turned away and walked further in where she can't see me. Finding a nice secluded area, I decided to get some more prep work for classes done and practice more spells.

After quite some time, I've finished looking into classwork and have been practicing the basic levitation charm. I'm able to get it to work but I'm continuing to practice it so I can use it on instinct without hesitation. As I levitate some of my books, I'm startled by a voice in my ear.

"Well what do we have here, you've learnt the levitation charm already? And multiple objects as well?"

I spin around and point my wand towards the voice and find Alexandra grinning at me with a strange look in her eyes. Observing her doesn't tell me much other than her being much stronger than I am, and that she is some sort of inventor.

[Alexandra Scyllara Rosier

[Aspiring Inventor]

LV - 90]

As I clear my throat and try to gather my thoughts, she approaches me again and lays a hand on my shoulder. "How have you been finding classes so far?" She questions with a glance towards my books and notes.

I manage to find my voice and respond, "Everything is straightforward so far, I'm definitely more interested in the wand-based subjects than others."

"Well I can't say I'm surprised, but don't count out the value of other fields of magic, there are many things wands can't accomplish." She says in a more serious tone than usual.

"Like what?" I ask, curious about what she's talking about.

"Powerful enchantments that can be imbued into an object, runes that can apply magic that has been used in advance, potions that can achieve effects that can never safely be done with wands, and those are the more basic examples." She blurts out passionately, with a shine in her eyes I didn't expect to see.

"Can you teach me some of what you know?" I question her.

Alexandra's eyes seem to flash with triumph and she responds, "Well I can teach you plenty, but what can you offer me in return?"

Going over what I could do for her, I finally told her honestly, "I'm not sure what I could offer you other than money, if you are willing to be paid directly to help me then I wouldn't be opposed."

"How about you do me a favour in the future instead?" She asks me nonchalantly.

I narrow my eyes and bluntly ask, "What do you want from me?"

She seems a bit surprised by my question, as though she didn't expect for me to not immediately accept. She stares at me for a few moments before shaking her head.

"I can't tell you what it is at the moment, however I swear to you that I won't ask for anything you'd be upset by." She says in a sincere voice.

I consider her request, and think back on how she helped me back in Knockturn Alley. Despite her being mysterious, so far she hasn't done anything bad to me and told me a few things that helped me prepare for the magical world. I decide on my answer and look Alexandra in the eyes.

"We have a deal. When do we start?"
