Severing Zeke's head which had been possessed by the Clown was something many would call foolish or absurd because he had asked only a single question.

All these questions and so many more were what Corey should have asked, but he did not. And he did this for quite a number of reasons.
One of them was because he already had the answer to some of these questions.
He could accurately guess what the Clown's goals were, and it was definitely related to the Book of Death.
If he had not noticed the oddity of the shadow behind the throne and was not quick to act, the Book of Death would have been stolen right in front of him.
