A sleepy voice broke through the stillness, soft but laced with amused judgment. "You two are still up?"
Allen turned his head just as Vivian stepped onto the balcony, her silk robe wrapped tightly around her and her hair tucked behind one ear. She looked half-asleep but still moved like a queen attending a midnight tea party.
"I thought you guys had already gone to bed," she murmured, rubbing one eye.
Jane stepped back, a little flustered, clearing her throat like she'd been caught doing something scandalous. Allen just chuckled.
"I was about to come in," he said. "Just needed air."
Vivian eyed the faint traces of ash near the candleholder. "You were burning something."
Allen hesitated. Then nodded. "Yeah. A letter."
Vivian didn't ask. She just walked closer and stood beside him, her bare feet nearly silent against the stone floor.
"From Jason," he added after a moment.
She hummed, as if that explained everything. "Was it awful?"
