Jason looked at her like he didn't quite believe her. Like part of him still waited for betrayal to bloom from her mouth.
But she met his gaze. Steady. Unflinching.
"I'm not going," she said again. "But Evan is."
Jason's mouth twisted. "And what? He's going to stand there all proud? Like we didn't raise him better?"
"No," she said. "He's going to stand there because we didn't raise him better."
That one hit.
Jason looked away.
Carla dried her hands and set the towel on the hook by the sink. The light above them hummed softly, flickering for half a second before settling again.
She turned to leave.
"Jason," she said, pausing by the doorway.
He looked up.
"You don't have to forgive Allen," she said. "But don't punish Evan for wanting to."
Jason stared at the counter.
The dish towel was crumpled in his hand.
