Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: The Last Exchange

For the first time, they smiled together.

Then charged.

The arena rose to its feet as one body.

No chants now.

No divided loyalties.

No slogans.

Only raw sound.

The kind a crowd makes when it knows something true is about to happen.

Sun's legs felt heavy as stone.

Arden's right shoulder hung a fraction lower than before.

Both injured.

Both exhausted.

Both too proud to care.

They met in the center.

Arden struck first.

Straight thrust.

Fast.

Clean.

Sun turned his body just enough.

The blade grazed his side instead of sinking deep.

Pain burned hot.

He answered with a hook punch.

Arden slipped it by a breath and drove his forehead into Sun's nose.

Crunch.

Blood poured instantly.

Sun cursed loudly.

Arden nodded.

"Valid response."

Sun laughed through the blood.

Then elbowed him in the jaw.

Arden staggered.

Sun pressed.

One-two body shots.

Low kick.

Shoulder drive.

Arden gave ground for the first time all match.

The crowd erupted.

"SUN!"

House Vale supporters screamed back.

"ARDEN!"

The arena split itself down the middle.

Arden planted his heel.

Stopped retreating.

Then moved with terrifying calm.

One blade bound Sun's sword.

His free hand seized Sun's sleeve.

Twist.

Turn.

Leverage.

Sun flew over Arden's hip and crashed flat on his back.

Air vanished.

The sky shook.

He heard thousands react far away.

Arden stood above him, chest heaving.

Blade raised.

Finish angle perfect.

Sun's body screamed to stay down.

The old voice whispered:

Too slow. Too weak. Not enough.

Then another memory rose stronger.

Nyra on the roof.

You won't be alone after.

Brin shouting.

Samira investing.

Rhea laughing.

Varen watching.

Old Ling smiling from another life entirely.

Sun rolled as Arden's blade struck stone where his throat had been.

He came up on one knee and drove a punch into Arden's stomach.

Arden folded.

Not elegantly.

Humanly.

Good.

They separated again.

Both slower now.

Sun's nose bleeding freely.

Arden breathing through his mouth.

The referee looked one heartbeat from stopping it.

Neither man gave him permission.

Arden wiped blood from his lip.

"You are impossible to finish."

Sun sniffed red.

"You are difficult to insult."

"That's growth."

"You still walk like applause."

"Regression."

Even the referee snorted.

They circled.

One last reserve in each tank.

One final chance.

Arden changed grip.

Dropped his damaged blade.

Single sword now.

Left hand free.

Sun lowered his own blade.

He could barely feel two fingers.

The runed metal hummed.

Hungry.

Alive.

System text flashed in his vision.

[Minor Destruction Pulse Available]

[Body condition: unstable]

[Recommendation: poor decisions likely]

Sun almost smiled.

Helpful system.

Arden noticed the change in his eyes.

"What was that?"

"Bad idea."

"Excellent."

They moved.

Arden darted in with a stabbing feint.

Sun didn't bite.

Arden transitioned instantly into a spinning slash toward the neck.

Sun ducked under it and stepped inside range.

Too close for swords.

Perfect.

He slammed forehead to forehead.

Both men reeled.

Sun grabbed Arden's wrist.

Arden grabbed Sun's collar.

They wrestled for balance like dockworkers with noble vocabulary.

Then Arden's knee drove into Sun's thigh.

Sun nearly collapsed.

Arden ripped free and raised the sword.

Sun's palm hit Arden's chest.

Destruction Pulse released.

A dark shockwave burst between them.

No grand beam.

No dramatic sky split.

Just concentrated force.

Enough.

Arden was hurled backward across the arena, skidding through sand and crashing onto one knee near the bronze boundary.

The crowd fell into stunned silence.

Sun remained standing for exactly two heartbeats.

Then dropped to one knee himself coughing blood.

The system text blinked smugly.

[Recommendation validated]

He hated it.

Arden tried to rise.

One knee.

Then both feet.

Then sway.

Sun forced himself upright too.

Every rib objected.

Every bruise filed appeal.

They stared across the sand.

Two men wrecked by each other.

The referee shouted:

"Continue or yield!"

Arden laughed weakly.

Sun answered with the same.

Neither moved.

Then Arden looked down at the boundary line behind him.

One more push and he'd be out.

He looked back at Sun.

Then slowly planted his sword point into the ground and bowed his head.

"I yield."

Silence.

Then the stadium exploded so violently birds rose from nearby roofs.

The referee raised both arms.

"Winner—SUN!"

Sun did not cheer.

He stood swaying, staring at Arden.

Arden straightened, walked forward despite pain, and stopped before him.

The crowd quieted enough to hear.

"You dragged me into an ugly fight," Arden said.

"You're welcome."

Arden extended his hand.

This time no trick in the eyes.

Sun took it.

Their grip shook with exhaustion.

Arden leaned closer.

"Win the tournament."

Sun blinked.

"That sounds supportive."

"It's selfish."

"How?"

"If I lost to the champion, my family complains less."

Sun barked a laugh despite blood.

"Practical noble."

Arden smirked faintly.

"Troublesome commoner."

They released hands.

The crowd roared even louder than for the finish.

Respect was addictive theater.

Above, Nyra had tears in her eyes and looked furious about it.

Brin hugged two strangers accidentally.

Rhea was counting coins so fast smoke nearly formed.

Samira simply exhaled long and slow.

Varen closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Pleased.

Probably.

Hard to prove.

As Sun turned toward the tunnel, the announcer's voice thundered again:

"By advancement to the quarterfinal bracket… Sun will next face—Mira Solenne of the Crimson Ember Sect!"

The arena erupted anew.

Sun stopped walking.

Then looked upward.

"Can one of you people let me heal first?"

Nyra shouted down immediately:

"No!"

He laughed helplessly.

Somewhere below the city, Kel was waiting.

Somewhere above it, new fire approached.

To be continued...
