Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Sound of Falling Pride

"Begin!"

Lucan exploded forward faster than expected.

Blue qi flared around his legs as he crossed half the arena in a blink, fist driving straight toward Sun's chest.

The crowd roared instantly.

Sun barely twisted aside.

The punch skimmed his ribs like a hammer passing judgment.

Pain sparked through him.

Lucan didn't pause.

Second strike.

Third.

A knee aimed high.

An elbow low.

The noble brat had trained.

Hard.

Sun gave ground step by step, blocking late, slipping narrowly, breath already ragged.

From the stands came delighted shouting.

"Teryn! Finish him!"

House Teryn's private box rose as one.

Lucan's father stood at the railing, stern face carved from expectations.

Sun saw it in one glance.

The source of that poison.

Lucan pressed harder.

"You surprised?"

Punch.

"I said I'd beat you."

Kick.

"You thought I only posed?"

Palm strike.

Sun caught the wrist at last and shoved free.

"No," Sun said, breathing hard. "I thought you only whined."

The crowd laughed.

Lucan's face flushed.

He hated laughter more than pain.

Good.

He charged again.

High above, Nyra gripped the railing so hard the wood creaked.

Brin leaned beside her shouting.

"Breathe, idiot! Use your feet!"

Samira remained seated, elegant and calm.

Only her fingers tapping the armrest betrayed tension.

Rhea waved a betting slip wildly.

"This is excellent drama!"

Nyra didn't look at her.

"He's hurt."

Brin glanced sideways.

"He's learning."

"That's different."

"No," Brin said quietly. "It only feels different when you care who's bleeding."

Nyra went still.

She did not answer.

Down in the arena, Sun ducked under another blow and felt warm blood from a split lip.

Lucan smirked.

"Where are your jokes now?"

Sun spat red into the sand.

"Recovering from your face."

The crowd howled.

Lucan roared and attacked recklessly.

There.

There it was.

The spoiled boy vanished when mocked.

The frightened son remained.

Sun's breathing slowed.

He remembered Varen's words.

Fight honestly.

No pretending strength.

No panic.

No old shame.

Just this moment.

He stepped in.

Lucan swung wide.

Sun slipped inside the arc, drove his shoulder into Lucan's chest, and hammered a short punch into his ribs.

Crack.

Lucan gasped.

Shock filled his eyes.

Someone had hit back.

Sun followed immediately.

Body blow.

Jaw strike.

Sweep kick.

Lucan stumbled backward across the arena sand, blue qi flickering unstable.

The crowd changed its voice.

That strange arena hunger turned.

Now they wanted upset.

Now they wanted collapse.

Now they wanted blood from a richer source.

"SPOON KING!"

"SPOON KING!"

Sun blinked mid-fight.

"I hate that name!"

Lucan rushed in screaming.

Sun sidestepped with Wolf Step.

A blur.

Lucan flew past him and nearly face-planted.

Laughter detonated through the stadium.

Lucan froze in humiliation.

He looked to his father's box.

The man did not move.

Did not cheer.

Did not help.

Only stared coldly.

Lucan's shoulders trembled.

For one second, Sun saw not an enemy—

but a son drowning publicly.

Then Lucan attacked again with tears of rage in his eyes.

Pity ended.

Their fists collided.

Pain shot through Sun's knuckles.

Lucan kneed his thigh.

Sun elbowed his ear.

Lucan clawed his collar.

Sun headbutted him.

Both staggered apart.

The referee stepped closer, tense now.

This had become ugly.

Human.

Real.

Lucan's lip shook.

"You don't understand!"

Sun wiped blood from his nose.

"Then explain while swinging!"

Lucan screamed and released all his qi at once.

Blue energy burst around him like flame.

Gasps rippled across the arena.

He launched forward in a final straight punch aimed at Sun's throat.

Everything narrowed.

Noise vanished.

Sun saw the line of attack.

The fear behind it.

The years of needing approval packed into one strike.

He stepped left.

Caught the wrist.

Turned.

And used Lucan's own momentum to slam him face-first into the sand.

Silence.

Then thunder.

The arena erupted.

Lucan lay there stunned, breathing hard, sand stuck to blood and tears alike.

Sun stood over him, chest heaving.

The referee began stepping in.

Then Lucan pushed himself up on shaking arms.

"No…"

His voice cracked.

"No…"

Sun looked at him.

Something heavy passed between them.

Not friendship.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Two men broken differently by the worlds that raised them.

Lucan charged one last time.

Slow.

Spent.

Desperate.

Sun met him with a clean punch to the jaw.

Lucan dropped flat on his back.

The referee raised both arms.

"Winner—SUN!"

The roar shook the sky.

Sun stood frozen.

For a heartbeat, he did not hear cheers.

He heard another room.

Another life.

Where accusations decided truth.

Where no one asked his side.

Where he stood silent and lost everything.

Then the present crashed back.

Thousands chanting.

"SUN!"

"SUN!"

"SPOON KING!"

He laughed helplessly through blood.

"Still hate that one."

Nyra was already over the railing before guards could stop her.

She landed beside him, breathing hard, eyes bright.

"You won."

"I noticed."

She punched his shoulder.

Hard.

"You scared me."

He blinked.

"That sounded caring."

She looked horrified.

"It was anger."

"Of course."

Then, without warning, she hugged him once—fast, fierce, and gone before his brain caught up.

The crowd lost its mind.

Rhea screamed louder than anyone.

Brin nearly fell laughing.

Samira covered a smile with her fan.

Sun stared after Nyra as she retreated three steps away pretending murder.

Lucan was being carried out.

As he passed, he looked at Sun once.

No sneer now.

Only shame.

And something like relief.

Sun quietly said:

"Win one for yourself next time."

Lucan's eyes widened.

Then he looked away.

In the noble section, Lucan's father turned and left without a word.

Sun watched that too.

And for the first time, victory tasted complicated.

Then the announcer's voice boomed again:

"Prepare the next match! Arden Vale enters the arena!"

The crowd surged louder.

Sun was still bleeding.

Still shaking.

Still smiling.

And Blackstone had finally learned his name.

To be continued...
