Evelyn Ford scrambled to her feet. A sob caught in her throat, her eyes stinging fiercely. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. She sprinted toward the figure as fast as she could, heedless of how much carbon ash she inhaled, her own heart pounding violently in her chest. Twenty meters, ten meters, five meters…
Finally, she grabbed his hand.
"I'm sorry, I'm late."
Evelyn was pulled into a warm embrace. She whimpered and shook her head, her tears soaking the fabric on Ronan Kendrick's chest. Finally, Evelyn could hold back no longer and broke down, wailing.
"Where did you go, you bastard, you asshole? Do you have any idea how scared I was? I thought you were dead! I didn't even want to live anymore, and only then do you show up." Evelyn vented all the panic and worry she had felt over the past few days. Ronan held her tightly. For every curse Evelyn hurled at him, he would just say, "I'm sorry."
