Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 |THE TRUTH IN THE SILENCE |

I had stopped asking questions, but that didn't mean I had stopped caring.

If anything, I cared more.

Every little thing James did seemed to stay in my mind. I could be busy with schoolwork, helping at home, or talking with my friends, and suddenly a thought about him would appear.

Why did he need that shirt?

Why was it Joselyn?

Why did he seem so comfortable with her?

I hated how many questions were living inside me.

But I hated confronting him even more.

So I watched.

James continued speaking to me as though everything was normal. Sometimes he was sweet enough to make me forget my doubts. He could say something simple and suddenly I would remember why I had fallen in love with him in the first place.

Those moments confused me.

How could someone make you feel so loved and so uncertain at the same time?

I began holding onto his good moments like evidence against my own fears.

Whenever doubt came, I reminded myself of the past.

He had once called me countless times in a day.

He had written letters to me.

He had visited me at school.

He had waited for me.

We had walked home together during vacation.

He had become known to my friends.

My mother liked him.

How could all of that suddenly mean nothing?

I didn't want to believe it could.

So I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Again.

But then I noticed something else.

Whenever Joselyn was around, James seemed different.

Not necessarily in a way that someone else would immediately notice.

But I noticed.

Maybe because I was already looking.

A smile that lasted a little longer.

A conversation that didn't seem to end.

An attention that I wished was directed toward me.

I began wondering whether he realized what his actions were doing to me.

Maybe he did.

Maybe he didn't.

Either possibility hurt.

One day, I found myself thinking about the little girl I had once been.

The girl who had asked Grandma, "Why doesn't Daddy choose me?"

I remembered how badly that little girl had wanted to feel chosen.

And suddenly, I understood why James's behavior affected me so deeply.

It wasn't just about Joselyn.

It was about being chosen.

I wanted to be the girl someone looked at and said, "It's you."

I didn't want to compete.

I didn't want to wonder.

I didn't want to feel like somebody else's presence could make me less important.

But instead of telling James all of that, I kept it inside.

I had become accustomed to swallowing pain.

At home, I swallowed it.

At school, I hid it.

With James, I was beginning to hide it too.

One evening, I sat quietly and thought about whether love was supposed to feel this uncertain.

I didn't know.

I was still young.

I was learning relationships through experience, and experience was teaching me some painful lessons.

Maybe love meant patience.

Maybe love meant forgiveness.

Maybe love meant trusting someone even when you were afraid.

But perhaps love also meant knowing when something wasn't right.

I wasn't sure which lesson I was supposed to learn.

So I waited.

Then came another moment that made my heart sink.

James mentioned Joselyn casually, as though her presence in his life was the most ordinary thing in the world.

I smiled.

I didn't react.

But inside, something whispered:

Pay attention.

I listened to that voice.

For the first time, I stopped trying to convince myself that everything was fine.

I didn't accuse him.

I didn't accuse Joselyn.

I simply accepted that my feelings were telling me something.

And perhaps that was the beginning of my awakening.

I started understanding that silence could reveal more than arguments.

When I stopped demanding explanations, I began noticing actions.

When I stopped trying to force answers, the unanswered questions became clearer.

And when I stopped looking at James through the eyes of the girl who desperately wanted to be chosen, I began looking at him through the eyes of someone who wanted to know the truth.

I still loved him.

That hadn't changed.

But something else had.

My innocence.

I was no longer blindly trusting every word.

I was learning to watch.

And I knew that eventually, watching wouldn't be enough.

One day, I would have to face whatever the truth was.

Whether it broke my heart or proved my fears wrong, I knew I couldn't hide from it forever.

For now, I kept quiet.

I continued loving James.

I continued living my life.

But somewhere deep inside me, a decision was beginning to form.

I would rather be hurt by the truth than comforted by a lie.

And I didn't know it yet, but the truth was already walking toward me.
