Chapter 21 - THE MAN I CALLED FATHER

"My father isn't my father."

The words hung in the room.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Elena.

She was crying.

Not silently this time.

Her shoulders shook as she covered her mouth.

That reaction told me everything.

There was a truth she had been carrying for years.

And I was finally standing close enough to it to feel its weight.

"Tell me," I whispered.

Elena lowered her hands.

"Lina…"

"Tell me who my father is."

She looked at Malik.

Then Daniel.

Then Victor.

Finally, she looked directly at me.

"You're not going to like the answer."

"I stopped caring about what I like."

My voice trembled.

"I just want the truth."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Your mother loved another man before she married the man you called your father."

My heart tightened.

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

"Who was he?"

"Elena," Daniel warned.

She turned toward him.

"She deserves to know."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Elena looked back at me.

"His name was Samuel."

I waited.

The name meant nothing to me.

"Where is he?"

"He's dead."

My chest fell.

"How?"

Elena shook her head.

"That is another part of the story."

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course it is."

I walked toward the table and picked up the photograph again.

"My mother said the truth was hidden at home."

"Yes."

"Then I'm going home."

Malik immediately stepped forward.

"I'm coming with you."

"No."

"Lina—"

"I need to do this alone."

"You shouldn't."

I turned toward him.

"Why?"

"Because if someone is watching you—"

"They've been watching me my entire life."

I wiped my tears.

"And apparently everyone around me knew."

Malik went silent.

I hated how hurt he looked.

But I was hurt too.

Maybe more than I had ever been.

Daniel approached me.

"You shouldn't go alone."

I looked at him.

"Why should I trust you?"

He stopped.

"You shouldn't."

The honesty surprised me.

"But I can still protect you."

I stared at him.

"That's what everyone says."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Victor suddenly spoke.

"Your mother expected you to return home."

I turned.

"How do you know?"

"She told me."

"When?"

"Three days ago."

My heart raced.

"She knew I would find out?"

"Yes."

"Then she planned this."

Victor nodded.

"She knew the truth would eventually surface."

I grabbed my bag.

"Then I'm going home."

Malik followed.

"I'm coming."

"Malik."

"You don't have to forgive me."

He looked into my eyes.

"You don't even have to speak to me. But I'm not letting you walk into danger alone."

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I looked away.

"Fine."

Daniel followed us.

Elena remained behind.

I stopped at the doorway.

"What about you?"

She looked at me.

"I have something to finish."

"What?"

"Your mother's story."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Elena gave me a sad smile.

"You'll understand."

Then she turned away.

I left.

The drive home was silent.

Malik drove.

I sat beside him, staring through the window.

Every street looked familiar.

Yet somehow, everything felt different.

I had lived in my house for years.

I had slept in the same room.

Walked the same hallway.

Opened the same drawers.

And somehow, my mother had hidden the truth about my birth somewhere inside it.

I looked at Malik.

"Did you know about Samuel?"

"Yes."

My heart tightened.

"Of course you did."

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew his name."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your mother asked me not to."

I looked away.

"My mother has been controlling my life from the shadows."

"She was trying to keep you alive."

"Maybe."

I stared at my hands.

"But sometimes protection feels exactly like betrayal."

Malik didn't respond.

After a while, he reached for my hand.

I pulled it away.

His fingers froze.

He returned his hand to the steering wheel.

Neither of us spoke again.

When we arrived, the house looked exactly as I remembered.

Quiet.

Empty.

Almost harmless.

But now I knew better.

I unlocked the door.

The moment I stepped inside, a strange feeling passed through me.

Something was different.

I looked around.

"Did you notice that?"

Malik entered behind me.

"What?"

"The house."

He looked around.

"No."

I walked toward the living room.

There was a picture of my mother on the wall.

I stopped.

She was smiling.

Young.

Beautiful.

Happy.

Beside her stood a man.

I had seen him before.

My breath caught.

"Malik."

He came closer.

"That's Samuel."

I stared at the photograph.

The man who was supposedly my biological father.

The man my mother had loved before everything changed.

But something about his face disturbed me.

I had seen those eyes before.

Somewhere.

I touched the photograph.

Suddenly, a memory flashed.

My mother holding me as a baby.

Samuel standing beside her.

A little boy in the corner.

Daniel.

And another child.

Malik.

I stepped backward.

"No…"

Malik caught my shoulders.

"What happened?"

"I remember."

"What?"

"I saw you."

His face went pale.

"Where?"

"In my mother's room."

I looked toward the hallway.

"There's something in there."

We hurried inside.

I searched through drawers.

Nothing.

Under the bed.

Nothing.

Inside the wardrobe.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the mirror.

Something about it felt wrong.

I touched the frame.

It moved.

My heart jumped.

"Malik."

Together, we pulled it away from the wall.

Behind it was a small wooden compartment.

Locked.

I reached into my pocket.

The silver key Victor had given me.

I inserted it.

Click.

The compartment opened.

Inside was a box.

And on top of it was a note.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

Lina,

If you've found this, then you finally know that the man you called your father was never your biological father.

I stopped reading.

Malik stood silently beside me.

I continued.

But Samuel was not the only secret.

My heart began pounding.

Your biological father died protecting you.

I covered my mouth.

Then I saw the final line.

And the man responsible for his death is someone you already know.

I slowly looked up.

Malik's face had gone pale.

"Who?" I whispered.

Before he could answer, something crashed downstairs.

We both turned.

Footsteps echoed through the house.

Someone was inside.

Malik grabbed my hand.

"Stay behind me."

We stepped into the hallway.

A shadow moved across the living room.

Then a man's voice called out.

"Lina."

I froze.

I knew that voice.

It was the voice from my childhood nightmares.

The voice that had ordered someone to take me.

The voice I had heard three days ago on the phone.

My father's voice.

"Come out."

Malik stepped in front of me.

The man appeared at the end of the hallway.

And when I saw his face, my entire world shattered.

He wasn't a stranger.

He was someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had been standing beside me while I searched for the truth.

Someone I had never once suspected.

I whispered his name.

"Adrian…"
