Chapter 12 - THE FRIEND WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

I couldn't breathe.

I stared at the photograph in my hands.

My best friend's name was written across the back.

MAYA.

For several seconds, the letters didn't make sense.

Maya.

My best friend.

The girl I had trusted with almost everything.

The girl who had held my hand when I cried.

The girl who had defended me when people misunderstood me.

The girl who had been beside me throughout everything.

And somehow, her name was connected to the night I was supposed to die.

"No," I whispered.

Malik took the photograph from me.

His eyes moved across the writing.

His expression changed immediately.

"You know her?"

I looked at him.

"She's my best friend."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Are you sure?"

I stared at him.

"What kind of question is that?"

"I'm asking because the person who wrote this may not be the same person you know today."

I shook my head.

"Stop."

"Lina—"

"No!"

My voice echoed through the empty house.

"You're all doing it again."

I wiped my tears.

"You're trying to make everyone look guilty."

Nobody spoke.

I turned toward Malik.

"Maya couldn't have done this."

"Why?"

"Because she loves me."

He looked at me sadly.

"Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones we never question."

I didn't want to hear it.

I couldn't.

Maya had been my safe place.

If she was involved, then I didn't know who I could trust anymore.

Suddenly, a noise came from upstairs.

We all froze.

Adrian immediately raised his hand.

"Stay here."

Malik shook his head.

"No. I'll check."

They moved toward the staircase.

I followed.

"I'm coming."

"Lina," Adrian warned.

"I am tired of being left behind."

He stared at me for a moment.

Then nodded.

We climbed the stairs quietly.

The hallway was dark.

One bedroom door was slightly open.

Malik pushed it wider.

Nothing.

The room was empty.

But something had been disturbed.

Drawers were open.

Clothes were scattered across the floor.

A cupboard stood wide open.

"Someone searched this room," Dominic said from behind us.

I turned.

"You came?"

He nodded.

"I couldn't stay away."

I looked at the room again.

"Why would someone search my mother's house?"

"Looking for something," Dominic replied.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

I walked toward the cupboard.

A small metal box sat at the back.

I pulled it out.

It was locked.

"What is this?"

Adrian stared at it.

"Don't open it."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I recognize it."

"From where?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at Malik.

He looked equally uncomfortable.

"Open it," I said.

Dominic shook his head.

"We need to be careful."

"I don't care anymore."

I grabbed a hairpin from the dresser and worked at the lock.

After several attempts, it clicked.

The box opened.

Inside were several documents.

A birth certificate.

A photograph.

A hospital bracelet.

And a folded letter.

My hands began shaking.

I picked up the birth certificate first.

My eyes moved across the page.

My name.

My mother's name.

Then something I had never known.

There was another name listed.

A second surname.

I looked at Adrian.

"Why does this say I had another surname?"

Nobody answered.

I unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was my mother's.

I began reading.

If Lina ever finds this, then the truth has finally caught up with us.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

I wanted to protect my daughter. I thought keeping her away from the past would keep her alive. I was wrong.

A tear fell onto the paper.

Malik stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

I continued.

The people who came after us were not acting alone. Someone close to Lina helped them. Someone I trusted.

My breathing became shallow.

The room seemed to spin.

I read the final sentence.

And that person was Maya's mother.

I dropped the letter.

"What?"

Dominic picked it up.

His eyes widened.

"Maya's mother?"

I nodded.

"But what does that have to do with Maya?"

Adrian answered carefully.

"It means her family may have been involved."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Lina—"

"No!"

I backed away.

"Maya is not her mother."

Malik gently took my hand.

"I know."

"You don't understand."

I looked at him through my tears.

"She was there for me when nobody else was."

"Maybe she doesn't know anything."

"Exactly."

I held onto that possibility.

Maybe Maya had no idea.

Maybe her mother had hidden everything from her.

Maybe the photograph meant something else.

I needed to believe that.

Then my phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

YOU FINALLY FOUND IT.

Another message followed.

NOW ASK YOUR FRIEND WHAT SHE REMEMBERS.

I stared at the screen.

My heart sank.

Maya called ten minutes later.

I almost didn't answer.

But I needed to hear her voice.

"Hello?"

"Lina?"

She sounded worried.

"Where are you?"

"At home."

"You weren't answering me."

"I was busy."

There was a pause.

"Are you okay?"

I closed my eyes.

"Do you remember the night I disappeared?"

Silence.

A long silence.

My heart began pounding.

"Maya?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You do."

"No, Lina."

"Then why is your name written on a photograph from that night?"

She stopped breathing.

I could hear it.

That tiny pause.

That hesitation.

"You found the photograph?"

My stomach dropped.

"How do you know what photograph I'm talking about?"

She didn't answer.

"Maya."

"I have to go."

"No!"

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Malik looked at me.

"She knows."

I shook my head.

"She sounded scared."

"Same thing."

"No."

I stood.

"She might be in danger."

Dominic grabbed his jacket.

"Where are you going?"

"To find her."

Adrian stepped in front of me.

"Absolutely not."

"Move."

"You don't know what you're walking into."

"She could be in danger!"

"So could you."

"I don't care!"

"I do."

His words silenced me.

For a moment, we simply stared at each other.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What happened?" Malik asked.

Adrian didn't speak.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"Maya's house is empty."

My heart dropped.

"What?"

"Her mother is gone too."

Dominic looked toward the window.

"That's impossible."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not anymore."

My phone vibrated again.

One final message appeared.

COME TO THE OLD WAREHOUSE ALONE.

Then another.

OR YOUR FRIEND DIES.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Malik saw the message.

"No."

"I have to go."

"You're not going anywhere alone."

"The message says alone."

"Then we're ignoring it."

"No!"

I looked at him.

"Maya may be in there."

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"Then why would you go?"

"Because she is my best friend."

I grabbed my jacket.

Malik blocked the door.

"You're not doing this."

I looked into his eyes.

"You once promised an eight-year-old girl that you'd find her."

His expression broke.

"You found me," I whispered.

"And now I'm asking you to trust me."

He stared at me.

Finally, he stepped aside.

"But I'm coming."

"No."

"I wasn't asking."

Dominic picked up his keys.

"Neither was I."

Adrian sighed.

"Then we're all going."

I looked at the three men.

For the first time, I understood something.

Whatever happened next would change everything.

Because the warehouse wasn't just where my past had begun.

It was where someone was waiting to finish the story.

And this time…

I was going back knowing exactly what was at stake.
