"Sir," she said, with the careful formality of someone delivering information that they know will be unwelcome.
"There's a man at the door. He says he is a knight serving the imperial family. He says—"
She paused, clearly choosing her words.
"He says there's a situation in the Noble District. He says it involves your family."
She looked hesitant, her hands clasped together, and her eyes were wandering here and there.
She gulped and said, "He says that he needs to see you."
The room went completely silent.
Jaegar had gone very still, the ease of the afternoon draining from his expression and being replaced by something more alert, more focused.
Jaegar ordered the staff member to bring that person inside, and the staff did.
A man entered the room in the next moment. He looked distressed, and they all could see the worry on his face and the hope in his eyes when he looked at Jaegar.
He didn't wait for them and started explaining.
