Chapter 126 - Chapter 126 - The State of Bear Island.

[Chapter Size: 2000 Words.]

Third Person POV.

The Gift.

...

...

The ironborn were advancing through the dry northern areas with the intention of seeing if there was any truth to the rumor that 200,000 wildlings had crossed the Wall, which would be quite problematic for them as they were spread across the North, pillaging.

They continued for the next few days, a group of hundreds moving forward, taking care not to be seen while even mapping villages to attack if given the chance, while ambushing some hunters, eliminating them before they could escape.

Everything seemed normal as they woke up in the middle of their camp in a very dry forest, but there was something wrong in the atmosphere that morning, as the leader looked out over the barren place.

"Something's wrong..." he murmured as they looked toward the center of the place filled with trees, only a few of them full of leaves.

"Should we warn the men?" another companion murmured as they were eating in front of a campfire, along with others who assisted in leading the group, gathered there with their leader.

"Yes..." the leader murmured, feeling a terrible sense about that atmosphere. He stood up, grabbing his axe.

"Quick, prepare for any attack!" he exclaimed, pointing to the rest of the camp as the men looked on in surprise at their leader's sudden command.

"Quick! Grab your weapons!" the other leaders shouted, prompting them to move quickly, when a sound cutting through the air was suddenly heard, and they looked back.

The leader of the group stood there, eyes dazed, letting out faint groans in disbelief at what was happening, frozen with an arrow lodged in his neck, blood gushing out.

"This..." his companions could barely comprehend it before seeing him collapse to the ground.

"Enemy attack!!!" one of them shouted immediately as arrows cut through the air by the dozens, flying from the forest, while men began to appear in the distance. The same man who had shouted was hit as well, falling dead to the ground.

The rain of arrows began to strike the camp, killing dozens of them as the ironborn hurriedly grabbed their shields while the arrows began to bring down the first men.

The forest was quickly overrun, the free folk advancing with weapons in hand, surrounding the camp as the ironborn began to launch their counterattacks, while the arrows ceased.

The ironborn were desperate as they started dying quickly, reduced to a small group while Tormund himself led the free folk, cutting down anyone in his path while laughing with a blood-covered face.

Some tried to escape, fleeing in the opposite direction, but they didn't get far, quickly caught and killed by direwolves.

It didn't take long for things to settle down, as all over 200 ironborn were killed. This was the first group, while Jon walked through the camp, not having participated in the battle beyond firing a few hidden arrows from the forest before more archers joined him.

He passed through calmly, looking over the place filled with corpses. The ironborn were not good group fighters like those from other kingdoms, as their activity was more about raiding and looting like pirates, but they should have known how to act better as a group than the free folk — well, that was before Jon had trained them beyond the Wall.

In short, the free folk suffered half a dozen deaths while all 200 ironborn were wiped out in the surprise attack.

"Hahaha. Finally, a bit of action!" Tormund was celebrating as he pulled his axe from a corpse's head.

Jon merely looked at it and moved toward the center of the area with some of his direwolves coming to him, their mouths stained with blood.

"Looks like we're done here... we have the advantage of locating them through the wargs and catching them by surprise. There are still a few more groups, so I want you to split up and kill them." Jon spoke again to his men.

"We'll burn all the bodies and move on." With that, everyone began to move.

He kept giving orders—after all, the ironborn had split into groups of hundreds to search for the wildlings who crossed the Wall, which made it easier. Jon had 2,000 men with him, splitting 500 into two groups, while his main force of 1,000 would head to the coast.

Tormund led one of the 500-man groups, eager for more fighting, since the coast wasn't expected to have many ironborn, just there to guard against more ships arriving if that happened.

And so, they proceeded, each group had its own wargs advancing through the North, searching for the groups that would be easily found, and Jon even placed two direwolves in each group to lead them, with him being the most powerful warg and able to control everything, while in the sky, he had at least five eagles flying across the region.

He wasn't even using his powers gained in Skyrim, sensing how easy these abilities from this world also made things for him.

It took three days to reach the coast, where about twenty ships were being observed from the air, while Jon returned to his men.

"It's simple—we'll just use arrows from a safe distance on the beach group and rush the ships. There's no way they can escape, with the main group already being slaughtered by Tormund and the others at this very moment." Jon said to the men in charge of the groups.

The ironborn had another surprise as they went about their actions unaware of the danger looming over them, with the only sounds being the men talking and drinking as the waves crashed against the beach.

Then the volley of arrows struck the group around the campfires on the sand, killing them instantly as they screamed in pain and despair.

Hundreds of free folk came out of the trees shortly after, with Jon watching it all from a distance alongside Ygritte and Val.

The ironborn ran to the ships seeking shelter, but the free folk had no trouble following them, killing anyone they reached. Those who made it onto the ships shut the doors while the free folk tried to break in.

"Looks like we have a little problem," Jon remarked calmly, finally stepping out from that area with others from the free folk, while his men gathered those who had surrendered into a pile.

"Jon, what should we do with these guys?" one of the free folk asked, looking at the group that stared back at Jon in fear.

"These animals are causing problems all over the North. We won't show mercy just because they surrendered. Give them a quick and painless death." Jon said simply and kept walking with his group.

He would have to handle the ships himself while his men tried to open the doors of at least five ships, and Jon didn't want to damage them.

He ignored the ironborn's protests as his men organized an execution behind him, and he headed toward the first ship.

"Get out of the way." he simply said to his men as they all stepped back from the door. He could feel the fear of those inside, but there was nothing left to do except kill them and burn their bodies.

He cast a spell directly at the door, striking it as it opened moments later—after all, opening doors was related to the school of Alteration, one of his specialties in which he was a master.

The door opened and he cast a spectral wolf spell as the creatures rushed inside. It didn't take long for the screams of men and growls to echo from within.

"Now drag these idiots out and execute them like the others." Jon said, moving on to the next ship, doing the same to all the locked ones, easily eliminating all the men hiding inside.

"We've got about twenty ships now. We can take a thousand men to Bear Island... but it will be a challenge for the free folk to sail ships like these..." Jon commented before looking at a group tied up nearby, while his men looked at him, waiting for his next orders.

"There's twenty-five of you... we killed all the others. How about we make a deal." Jon began, looking at the men there, terrified since no one but them had survived and they expected only to die.

"I want you to help me take my men to Bear Island. In return, I'll let you live." Jon said, seeing no other option but to make a deal with them so the free folk could reach Bear Island, even if, in the end, he wanted to kill every last one of these pests.

"We'll never do that, savage." one of them spat on the ground, speaking directly to Jon.

Jon simply clenched his hand and killed him, leaving everyone wide-eyed as their companion's neck was broken, all of them becoming agitated and letting out shocked groans. The free folk watched in surprise too—after all they had seen, it was still incredible to witness Jon using his powers, able to kill a man at any moment he chose.

"Now there are only twenty-four of you. I wonder—does anyone else refuse?" Jon asked calmly, and no one else objected, even more terrified of the man who had killed their companion in such a supernatural way.

"We'll do it, just spare us." one of them finally said. It no longer mattered if they were aiding the enemy in killing their own people—they just wanted to live and not die like the last one.

"That's good. I want you to set up camp on the beach. I'll have to go take a direct look at Bear Island to see what's going on there." Jon stated as the men began to set up the camp.

Winter fell upon the beach at that moment, leaving the ironborn even more terrified with the arrival of a massive white dragon.

There was still a full day to make use of the light, and Jon continued, riding Winter out to sea, leaving the beach and ships behind with his men, while the direwolves stayed with the girls.

Bear Island didn't take long to find, quite close to the coast, but still a challenge for the free folk who had never sailed a ship—hence why Jon needed the ironborn themselves if he wanted to launch an attack.

He continued on, spotting ships along the northern coast—there was at least one camp with eight ships. Leaving the coast behind, he entered the island directly, exploring the place.

And Jon couldn't help but frown. He passed through small towns and many villages, all devastated, with burned houses and even rotting corpses left in the daylight, still being devoured by crows and other animals.

Every place he passed was full of signs of destruction, while the common folk were unprepared for an attack like that, unable to defend themselves with House Mormont's army in the south for the war, and all other forces concentrated at the castle, unable to help the rest of the island.

"Those bastards." Jon hated raiders and pirates, but this was beyond anything he had seen.

The ironborn killed, stole, and raped when they weren't taking prisoners as slaves or salt wives.

He continued flying with Winter at a height where he wouldn't be noticed, no more than a bird in the sky, while he used his warg powers to see through Winter's eyes, far better than his own.

He flew over more destruction across the island and saw where most of the ironborn men were currently gathered, finally reaching the Mormont castle.

There were at least 4,000 ironborn laying siege there, with their ships left on the northern coast of the island.

He flew a bit further across the island and decided to return, plotting a plan that would begin a massacre—still hoping to rescue many of the captives they held on the ships, already knowing that many had been sent to Pyke, with the Dragonborn's heart filled with rage.
