Odalie had finally torn the writhing, black-eyed spirit out of the child when the walls began to glow. She stepped out of the holding room with Lyra limp in her arms just in time to see gold-white lightning web across the room beyond the corridor and bring her enforcers down one by one, wands clattering from spasming fingers, until every one of them lay twitching on the boards. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She was a powerful witch in her own right, hardened by decades of ruthlessness in the bayou and a master of dark, ancestral hoodoo. She did not scare easily. But the sheer, oppressive weight of battle magic, seen up close, was a cold awakening. Spells cast with non-verbal precision. Lightning that dropped grown men in a single strike. The rumors about the House of Black were not old-world exaggeration.
Sirius turned from the broken men on the floor and looked straight at her. Then his gray eyes found his daughter's blood-stained face, and the air in the room turned so cold their breath bloomed in pale fog.
"What did you do?" Sirius hissed, his voice low and shaking with fury. His wand tip hummed with gold-and-black sparks, raised directly at her chest.
Odalie mentally cursed. Forcing a higher-tier bayou spirit out of the girl without snapping the child's thread entirely had cost her enormously. She was drained, her side ached from the shockwave, and now she was staring down the wand of an enraged father with no enforcers left to hide behind.
Yet Odalie was a Delacroix. She did not beg, and she did not cower.
Slowly, deliberately, she shifted her grip and pressed the tip of her own wand against the pulse point of the unconscious child's throat. A thin smile returned to her lips, masking the strain in her chest.
"Now, now, Heir Black," Odalie purred, her voice dripping with dangerous confidence. "I would suggest you be remarkably careful where you point that wand. One wrong move, and I assure you... your precious medium won't wake up at all."
"Medium?" Sirius spat, the word thick with disgust. "She's my daughter. Not some asset for you to exploit."
Odalie's lips curved into a patronizing smile, though her fingers tightened around her wand. "You may dislike the terminology, mon cher, but you cannot ignore the reality. She is an exceptionally gifted medium, the kind that comes along once in a century. And right now, her life rests in my hands."
She pressed her wand harder against the unconscious girl's throat, her eyes flashing with cold authority.
"Now, you will lower your wand, step back into the hall, and allow me to walk out of here unhindered," Odalie demanded smoothly. "Or I will end her life."
A sneer curled Sirius's lip, but he didn't lower his wand by even an inch.
"You think I'm buying that bluff?" Sirius said, his voice flat and dangerously quiet. "I know about your dying house, and I know about your succession crisis. You took my daughter because you are desperate, and without her, your faction loses everything. You need her alive and whole, and you wouldn't dare break the only bargaining chip keeping you breathing."
Odalie felt a sharp, icy prickle at the back of her neck. He knew?
"Your brother-in-law was kind enough to tell me," Sirius added, his voice smooth and laced with toxic satisfaction.
That spineless bastard.
Venomous hatred flared in Odalie's chest. Étienne. That sniveling, self-righteous leech. It all made sense now. How Sirius Black had managed to drag himself out of that hotel suite in the first place, and how he had found his way straight to her safehouse.
It was a bloody miracle the man was even standing, let alone slinging high-tier spells. The hex bag she had planted under the floorboards was laced with an S-rank ancestral curse, potent enough to rot a wizard's core from the inside out within hours. Anyone else would be screaming on a hospital bed or dead.
Marie's pathetic little husband must have used our own counter-rituals to purge it, Odalie realized, her teeth gritting so hard her jaw ached. I should have killed him years ago.
Yet even as fury boiled beneath her skin, Odalie kept her arm steady, her wand tip still pinned to the child's throat. She couldn't afford to let her rage show.
"Étienne is a man clinging to a dead matriarch's shadow," Odalie sneered, her voice cold and unbothered despite the sweat slicking her palms. "He knows nothing of what it takes to protect this bloodline. And if you think his gossip gives you leverage here, Heir Black, you are sorely mistaken."
She leaned in, her eyes glinting with a ruthless, desperate light.
"You are right. I need her alive to secure my seat. But I only need her mind intact. A broken limb, a severed vocal cord, or a burnt magical core can always be mended later with time and dark alchemy. Do not test how much damage I am willing to inflict on your daughter just to walk out that door."
Odalie watched the fury flare in Sirius's eyes, a cold wave of satisfaction washing over her. She had hit the nerve. No parent, no matter how formidable, could stomach the thought of their child suffering even a fraction of that agony.
Sirius's shoulders stiffened, his wand lowering by a fraction of an inch. She could see him calculating. A heavy spell risked a stray shockwave shattering the girl in her arms, and he could never outcast a wand already pressed to Lyra's throat.
Slowly, carefully, Odalie began backing toward the ruined doorway, her wand still pinned to Lyra's throat and her dark eyes locked on the father. As she reached the threshold, her lips curled into a mocking, triumphant sneer.
"You should have agreed to the betrothal," Odalie purred, her tone rich with patronizing venom. "None of this would have fallen upon you or your daughter if you had simply cooperated."
Sirius's jaw snapped tight, a terrifying, primal rage boiling over in his gray eyes.
"You mean to your twenty-six year old son?" Sirius snarled, his voice vibrating with disgust. "You insane, predatory monster!"
Odalie merely chuckled, opening her mouth to deliver one final parting strike—
"NOW!" Bea's voice cracked through the room.
Before Odalie could even react, two shadows burst from the high rafters above the shattered door. Both women were battered and filthy, their cloaks torn and singed from their previous fight.
Bea hit the ground in a low, vicious dive, wrapping her arms around Odalie's ankles with bone-crushing force. Odalie gasped, her balance ruined as her feet were swept out from under her.
At the same instant, Mara descended like a hawk. In mid-air, she snatched the limp, unconscious form of Lyra straight out of Odalie's loosened grip. As they hit the floorboards, Mara twisted her body completely, rolling hard onto her shoulder to absorb the entire impact and using her own frame as a shield for the fragile child against her chest.
"You wretched little vermin!" Odalie shrieked, falling hard on her hip. Blinded by rage, she whipped her wand around to blast Bea's head off.
She never got the chance.
The moment Lyra was clear of Odalie's hands, Sirius didn't hesitate. With his daughter safe, the last shred of his restraint vaporized into lethal intent.
"CONFRINGO!"
A blinding torrent of liquid fire burst from Sirius's wand, scorching the air as it tore straight toward Odalie's chest.
Abandoning her attack on Bea, Odalie threw herself sideways across the damp floorboards, thrusting her arm upward. "PROTEGO TOTALUM!"
BOOM!
Sirius's blasting curse slammed into her shimmering dome, detonating in a violent shockwave of heat, light, and flying stone. The sheer pressure shattered her shield like thin glass and sent Odalie skidding across the floorboards into the brick wall.
She let out a strangled gasp, blood springing from a deep gash on her forehead as she scrambled to her feet, her robes scorched and her eyes burning with desperate, feral hatred. She thrust her wand forward, her mouth opening to cast a dark, fatal curse—
Sirius was already upon her.
Moving with terrifying, predatory speed, he closed the distance in two long strides, his wand flicking through a brutal combination.
"Fractura!"
The stone beneath Odalie's feet detonated upward, sending razor-sharp shrapnel tearing through her shoulders and arms. Odalie screamed as her wand-arm buckled, but Sirius gave her no quarter.
"Expulso!"
A blue shockwave hit her square in the chest with the force of a battering ram. The impact snapped her ribs with an audible crack and launched her backward, slamming her against the desk, her wand flying from her limp fingers and clattering into the darkness.
Odalie collapsed onto her knees, wheezing, clutching her shattered chest as blood dripped from her lip onto the damp floor. She was severely injured, her magical core flickering, utterly outmatched by the relentless onslaught of an enraged father.
Sirius stepped through the clearing smoke, his face an unreadable mask of glacial rage. He raised his wand directly between her eyes, his magic humming with lethal, heavy power as he prepared to deliver a final, crushing spell to end her.
"Heir Black, STOP!"
A voice rang out from the ruined threshold, commanding, clear, and rich with authority.
Sirius halted, his wand tip glowing with a dangerous golden light, his gray eyes snapping toward the doorway.
Standing in the ruined entrance was a woman in an elegant, sweeping Creole-inspired gown of deep sapphire blue. Her head wrap was meticulously folded. One hand rested against the doorframe, steadying her, and the grey pallor of exhaustion showed beneath the rich color of her gown. But she straightened to her full height, and her posture exuded a quiet, undeniable power that commanded the room.
Sirius did not need an introduction. The authority, the gown, the grey exhaustion beneath it. Marie Delacroix. Étienne's wife. The true matriarch of the Laveaus.
Behind her in the corridor stood Étienne, weary but resolute, alongside Esme, Isaac, a squad of heavily armed ICW Custodians, and the remaining Delacroix house guards.
Odalie slowly lifted her battered, blood-streaked face from the floorboards, her dark eyes widening as the air drained from her lungs. The disbelief in her voice was choked with blood and trembling shock.
Marie looked down at the broken, bleeding woman on the floor. She didn't bat an eye at Odalie's injuries, her gaze as cold and unforgiving as marble.
"You look well, sister," Marie said, her voice smooth, though roughened by a subtle rasp.
"You!" Odalie gasped, her bloodied hand clutching her broken ribs as her mind raced to comprehend the nightmare before her. "That's impossible... You shouldn't even be able to stand! How?"
Marie's composure cracked for an instant, righteous fury burning in her dark eyes.
"I have our honored guests to thank for that," Marie replied, gesturing toward Esme and Isaac. "Lady Black could not break the curse, but she has held it back, and that is enough for me to stand on. It will hold until we find a way to tear it out."
Marie turned toward Sirius and bowed her head with sincere respect. "Heir Black, I owe you my deepest gratitude. You have stopped a monster today. But please, lower your wand and allow us to handle her from here. This is a Delacroix matter, and my house will see justice served."
At a small gesture from Marie, the Delacroix guards filed into the room and closed around Odalie.
Sirius's jaw tightened. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to finish the witch who had threatened his daughter, and he opened his mouth to protest. He never got the words out.
Beside him, Esme completely ignored the political confrontation. The moment her eyes fell upon Mara, kneeling a few paces away with the limp, pale body of her daughter in her arms, Esme's composure shattered into a gasp of agony.
"Lyra!"
Esme rushed past the guards and Custodians, tears spilling down her cheeks as she dropped to her knees beside Mara. Isaac stepped up beside Sirius and placed a firm, steadying hand on his shoulder.
"Go, Sirius," Isaac murmured quietly. "We have the perimeter. Go to your family."
Sirius didn't need to be told twice. He turned his back on Odalie completely and sprinted across the room, dropping to his knees beside Esme.
Mara gently transferred the quiet, fragile child into Esme's trembling arms. Esme pulled Lyra tightly against her chest, burying her face in the girl's straight blond hair, her hands shaking as she touched the dark, dried blood staining her tiny nose and cheeks.
"My baby... oh Circe, my sweet girl..." Esme sobbed softly, resting her forehead against Lyra's. "Maman is here. Maman's got you."
Sirius wrapped his arms tightly around both of them, his broad hand cradling the back of Lyra's head, his pulse roaring in his ears as he breathed in his daughter's familiar scent, relieved beyond words that she was alive.
Lyra's long eyelashes fluttered weakly. Slowly, painfully, her eyes opened. Her gray eyes stared up at them, dull and exhausted.
She blinked against the harsh light, her gaze focusing groggily on the two tear-streaked faces hovering above her.
"...Maman? Papa?" Lyra rasped, her voice barely a whisper.
Sirius choked back a heavy breath, kissing the top of her head. "Yes, my little spitfire. It's us. You're safe now."
"Mon petit oiseau," Esme whispered, her tears dropping onto Lyra's pale cheek. "We've got you, my darling. We're right here."
Lyra whimpered softly, pressing her face weakly into the fabric of Esme's robes as her tiny hand reached up to clutch Sirius's finger.
"It hurts, Maman..." she murmured.
Esme squeezed her eyes shut, pressing another soft kiss to Lyra's forehead as Sirius tightened his hold around them both, shielding their daughter from the ruined room.
"I know, my love," Esme whispered fiercely. "I know. But Maman is going to make it all better now."
